Laura Kampf is a self-taught maker known for moving between wood, metal and recycled materials rather than staying within one trade. Her videos show the builds, but the experimentation, problem-solving and physical act of making are central to the story too.
Who is Laura Kampf?
Kampf is a maker and video creator whose work crosses disciplines. In a Festool interview, she describes the benefit of that range: “The advantage of that is that I am not limited to working with just one material, for instance wood, but can also work with metal or recycled materials.”

That breadth is a useful way to understand her work: the project leads, and the materials and techniques follow. It is less a signature tied to one craft than an approach built around trying things, adapting and learning along the way.
What does Laura Kampf make?
Her projects include furniture and objects made by combining materials and skills. In a Raspberry Pi/HackSpace interview published on 4 August 2021, Kampf recalled a design-school assignment to build something from everyday objects. She made a tattoo machine, an experience that helped her discover the appeal of bringing different skills together.

That interview also discussed her interest at the time in developing selected furniture ideas with a production partner, while not wanting to manage production herself. It describes her position in 2021, not a current product line or active partnership.
How did Laura Kampf become a maker?
Kampf describes herself as self-taught: “I taught myself everything,” she said in the Festool interview. She does not present making as a flawless sequence of expert steps. Mistakes and improvisation are part of her learning process; working across disciplines gives her room to adapt when a project does not go as planned.

Her first-person Wera profile recounts an early YouTube project, “Laura’s Walnut Lamp,” and describes learning through things going wrong. The profile also discusses her upload rhythm at the time it was written; it should not be taken as a current schedule.
Why does she document the process?
For Kampf, building and recording are related but distinct experiences. In the 2021 Raspberry Pi/HackSpace interview, she described the physical work as a form of meditation: “the physical work of building something, that’s a form of meditation.” She characterized documenting the work for YouTube as the work part, while building itself was her happy place.

She has also said that she wants her videos to inspire viewers and reduce some of the fear around doing things themselves. In the Wera profile, she put it simply: “I don’t want to sell anything — I want to inspire.”

In that interview, she discusses practical considerations for tools she uses over long stretches, including weight, ease of handling and battery life. She also mentions avoiding a workshop full of different charger systems. For your own projects, those criteria are more useful than treating a creator’s named tool as a universal recommendation:
- Handling and weight: consider how comfortable a tool is to control during the kind of work you do.
- Battery life: match runtime to your typical sessions and project demands.
- Existing system: account for tools and chargers you already own before adding another battery platform.
