If a Janome sewing machine is breaking thread, stitching unevenly, or refusing to feed fabric, stop sewing and start with the manual for your exact model. Check the needle, bobbin, threading and lint only as the manual directs. If those basic checks do not fix a persistent tension problem—or the machine looks mechanically damaged—contact an authorized Janome dealer.
Before troubleshooting: find the manual for your exact Janome
Threading routes, bobbin types, cleaning instructions and controls can differ by model. Janome’s support resources include manuals and model-specific information. The model name is on the front of the machine; the production code is on its back. Janome Canada also provides a manuals page, while Janome Global explains how to find a manual.

Do not force fabric or dismantle internal parts while troubleshooting. If the manual identifies a task as owner maintenance, follow its instructions; for anything beyond that, consult a dealer.
Needle thread breaks or stitches look uneven
- Stop and inspect the needle. Replace it if bent or dull, and check that it is inserted correctly. A needle that is too fine for the work, excessive upper tension, or a mismatch between needle and thread can also contribute to breakage. Use the needle-and-thread chart in your model’s manual to choose the type and size for the fabric and thread.
- Rethread the upper path from the beginning. Raise the presser foot before threading so the tension discs can open. Seat the thread in every guide and the take-up lever, and make sure it has not bypassed the tension discs.
- Check the tension setting against the manual. Janome’s troubleshooting guidance lists overly tight needle-thread tension as a possible cause, but does not establish one tension number that applies to every model or project.
- Position both threads as directed. Check the manual for how the upper and bobbin threads should sit under the presser foot before sewing.
Janome America’s technical support guidance says persistent tension trouble may require examination by an authorized dealer.

Bobbin thread breaks, loops, or stitches poorly
- Remove and reinstall the bobbin as the manual shows. Check its orientation and confirm the thread passes through the specified notches.
- Inspect the bobbin and surrounding area. Look for visible bobbin damage and lint around the bobbin and hook area. Clean only as the manual directs.
- Use the correct bobbin for the model. Janome’s general support instructions call for Janome-brand plastic bobbins, but MB-4, MB7 and 1600P models use industrial-style metal bobbins. Bobbins are not universal; verify compatibility before replacing one.
Do not adjust bobbin-case tension or take apart internal mechanisms based on generic instructions. Those steps are model- and service-specific.
Fabric does not advance
- Check the feed dogs. Confirm they are raised for ordinary sewing and look for lint around them. Clean the area only according to the model’s manual.
- Check threading and the needle. Rethread if needed and replace a worn needle. Janome Global’s FAQ notes that a worn needle can contribute to fabric being pushed into the needle plate.
- Verify the machine’s settings. If the fabric still will not move, check the manual for the relevant feed settings rather than pulling or pushing the fabric through.
The feed and bobbin checks in Janome Global’s FAQ are general guidance; follow your model’s manual where instructions differ.

Machine does not start or keeps stopping
Janome manuals include a “machine does not work” troubleshooting condition, but the possible causes and checks vary by model. Use your manual to check its power connection, controls, presser-foot position, bobbin-winding setup and any safety interlocks. Do not assume a reset or error-code procedure applies to every Janome machine.

Arrange service if correct manual-led threading, cleaning, and needle and bobbin checks do not resolve persistent tension problems, or if the machine appears mechanically damaged.
