A sports fan quilt can show a team through licensed logo fabric or evoke its colors with solids and geometric prints. One ready-to-follow option is Christine Stainbrook’s Sports Fan Quilt pattern from AllPeopleQuilt: a 54 × 78-inch quilt made from fifteen 12-inch finished blocks, with sports-themed prints and coordinated borders.
What the Sports Fan Quilt pattern makes
The AllPeopleQuilt pattern, updated June 3, 2025, arranges fifteen blocks in five rows and finishes the top with inner, middle, and outer borders. Each block finishes at 12 inches. The pattern uses sports-theme novelty prints for the block centers and coordinated fabrics around them; a sports stripe forms the middle border.
For a team-specific quilt, American Patchwork & Quilting Editors advise: “Use licensed prints for your recipient’s favorite team for a personalized gift!” The same layout can instead suggest a favorite team or school through its colors, without making logos the focal point.

Fabric requirements for the 54 × 78-inch quilt
These quantities are the AllPeopleQuilt pattern’s requirements for 100% cotton fabrics. Sports novelty-print quantity varies from five to nine fat eighths, each measuring 9 × 22 inches.

Choose licensed sports-team quilting fabric if logos and franchise identity matter most. Before buying, compare licensing and team authenticity, color accuracy, print scale, cotton weight, and whether the fabric is available by the yard. Large or busy motifs can compete with the block design; smaller motifs or team-color solids make a quieter top. Retail stock and prices change, so confirm current availability with the seller.

How the blocks and borders come together
The pattern relies on accurate rotary cutting, consistent 1/4-inch seam allowances, and careful pressing. Cut sports-print squares at 6 1/2 inches, then frame them with light-brown rectangles to create centers measuring 8 1/2 inches. Add the black, red, blue, and green pieces to bring each block to 12 1/2 inches unfinished; after assembly, each block finishes at 12 inches.
- Make 15 blocks, pressing seams consistently as directed in the pattern.
- Arrange the blocks in five horizontal rows and sew the rows together.
- Add the inner border, sports-theme stripe middle border, and outer border.
- Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing; baste the layers, quilt as desired, and bind with the remaining brown strips.
Adapting the idea to team colors
A team quilt does not need licensed logos to read as a fan quilt. Use the franchise or school colors in solids, tone-on-tone fabrics, and geometric blocks, reserving novelty prints for a few accents if desired. Quilting Daily editors describe two-color and team-color adaptations, and editor Valerie Uland explains the approach this way: “My approach to finding a pattern for a “team colors” quilt was to look for two-color quilts.”

There are other ways to interpret the idea. In Color Order documented a 51 × 68-inch quilt made with half-square triangles in Detroit Tigers, Lions, Red Wings, and Cavaliers colors, backed with a vintage NFL sheet. That example shows a different scale and construction approach from the 54 × 78-inch AllPeopleQuilt pattern; its fabric requirements are not stated here.

Plan for accurate cutting and measuring before starting. A rotary cutter, cutting mat, and quilting ruler help cut repeatable pieces; an iron, pins, and sewing machine support piecing and assembly. The main decision is whether to let licensed prints carry the team identity or use color and geometric pattern for a more understated design.
