For most flat knitted blankets, the long-tail cast-on is the best all-purpose starting point: it makes a neat edge with useful give, without being overly rigid. Choose a cable cast-on when you want a firmer edge, a provisional cast-on when you plan to reopen the edge, and a ribbed or tubular method for a ribbed border.
Which cast-on should you use for a blanket?
Start with the blanket pattern’s instructions. If it specifies a cast-on, use that method; the pattern may rely on the edge’s appearance, stretch, or relationship to the first row. For a pattern that leaves the choice open, use this guide:
| Method | Best for | Edge character | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long-tail | Most conventional flat blankets | Neat, versatile, and elastic | Requires estimating a long yarn tail |
| Cable | A crisp or structured lower edge | Firm and defined, with less give than a more elastic edge | Stitches are added from the working yarn, so there is no long tail to measure |
| Knitted | A simple beginner-friendly start | Firm and less stretchy than long-tail | Not ideal when the edge needs to expand substantially |
| Provisional | An edge you will later open or extend | Temporary, with live stitches available to work later | Use when the pattern calls for later pickup, a border, or a seamless transition |
| Tubular or ribbed cable | A 1×1 ribbed edge | Designed to suit ribbing; tubular cast-on is neat and stretchy | Usually unnecessary for plain garter, stockinette, or mosaic edges |
| Backward-loop | A deliberately loose edge or stitches added mid-project | Can be loose | Rarely the strongest choice for a blanket’s bottom edge |
Why long-tail is the best default
Brooklyn Tweed describes long-tail as a two-strand cast-on that is “strong, elastic, and quite versatile.” It uses the working yarn and a measured tail to form the stitches. That balance makes it a practical default for a blanket edge that should lie neatly without feeling rigid. Lion Brand likewise describes it as popular, versatile, neat, and elastic.
Estimate the tail before casting on
A long blanket may require many stitches, so running short of tail can mean starting over. Brooklyn Tweed suggests wrapping the yarn around the needle once for each required stitch, with extra for insurance. This is an estimate, not a guarantee: yarn thickness and how tightly you wrap affect the amount used.

If measuring a long tail feels uncertain, choose cable or knitted cast-on instead. Both build stitches from the working yarn and avoid the need to set aside a long measured tail.
Keep the edge from drawing in
Leave the cast-on stitches spaced along the needle rather than cinching them tightly. A tight cast-on can pull the blanket edge in and make it narrower than the fabric above it. Swatch with the blanket yarn if you are unsure how the edge will behave.

When to choose a firmer cast-on
Choose the cable cast-on when you want a crisp, defined lower edge, a dense texture, or a little less give than long-tail. Lion Brand characterizes it as neat and firm; a blanket-focused comparison also describes it as sturdy and suitable when heavier yarn or extra structure is wanted. It avoids estimating a long tail, but the firmer result may be less suitable where the edge needs considerable stretch.
The knitted cast-on is another straightforward option. It is made much like a knit stitch and is easy to learn, but Lion Brand says its edge is firmer and less stretchy than long-tail. It can suit a lightweight, drapey blanket or a knitter who prioritizes simplicity, provided the edge does not need to expand much.

When a temporary or ribbed cast-on makes sense
Provisional cast-on for an edge you will reopen
A provisional cast-on uses waste yarn or another removable setup to keep stitches live. Later, you can remove the temporary edge and work in the opposite direction, pick up stitches, or create a seamless transition. This is a specialist choice for a pattern that calls for a later border or other work from the cast-on edge—not the usual start for a plain blanket.
Tubular or ribbed cable cast-on for ribbing
Brooklyn Tweed presents ribbed cable and tubular cast-ons as options for beginning 1×1 ribbed fabric. Lion Brand describes tubular cast-on as neat and stretchy, typically used for cuffs or hems. These methods can suit a ribbed blanket border, but add complexity without much benefit for a plain garter, stockinette, or mosaic edge.

Backward-loop cast-on only when looseness is useful
Lion Brand calls backward-loop the easiest method and notes that it can produce a loose edge. That can help for a deliberately relaxed edge or stitches added mid-row. For a blanket’s bottom edge, which is handled often, that looseness is usually a reason to choose another method.
Match the cast-on to the pattern and first row
Cast-on choice is not separate from pattern construction. Check whether the first row is worked on the right or wrong side and whether the edge will be seamed, bordered, or left visible. Berroco’s Cable Craze Blanket Knit-Along provides a pattern-specific example: it has 12 cable blocks and instructs knitters to cast on each block using long-tail because the first row begins on a wrong-side row.

Quick Recap
Check the edge before committing to a full blanket
- Cast on a small swatch in the actual blanket yarn using the method you are considering.
- Work the first few centimetres in the intended stitch pattern, then compare how the edge looks and stretches.
- Keep the stitches evenly spaced. If the cast-on edge is too tight, first check your tension; use a larger needle only if the pattern or swatch indicates that change is appropriate, since it also changes the edge gauge.
- If the blanket is made from separate squares, use the same cast-on method and edge tension across the squares so the seams align evenly.
