Kintsugi (金継ぎ, “golden joinery”) is a Japanese ceramic-repair technique: broken pieces are joined with lacquer, traditionally urushi, and the repaired seams are finished with powdered gold or silver. Rather than concealing a break, kintsugi makes the repair visible as part of the object’s history and appearance.

How kintsugi works

Traditional kintsugi is a material process, not simply a gold-colored line painted over a crack. Lacquer serves as the adhesive and may also be used to fill gaps; further lacquer layers prepare the join for metallic powder. The final seam draws attention to where the ceramic broke or was chipped. The Government of Japan describes repaired pottery continuing to be used, and the Urasoe Art Museum explains that the technique treats breaks as part of an object’s history. Urushi is natural lacquer made from the sap of lacquer trees, which grow mainly in China, Korea, and Japan, according to LACMA conservators. Traditional finishes can use gold or silver powder; the presence of a gold-colored seam alone does not establish that an object contains genuine gold or was repaired with urushi. LACMA

What kintsugi means—and what it does not

Kintsugi is closely associated with Japanese ceramic and tea culture, including chanoyu, the tea ceremony, and the aesthetic of wabi-sabi. The Government of Japan connects the practice to an appreciation of simplicity and imperfection. In kintsugi, that idea is tangible: the break and its repair remain visible instead of being made to disappear. Government of Japan

This connection should not be reduced to a generic lesson that hardship automatically makes a person stronger. Kintsugi is a specific craft with a history and materials; as an image, it can suggest change, repair, and reuse, but its meaning depends on the object and its context. The Smithsonian also discusses contemporary connections to mushin, waste reduction, and creative reuse. Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art

A brief history of the technique

The history is older and less tidy than the familiar origin tale that attributes kintsugi to a single Japanese ruler. The Smithsonian says lacquer was used to repair ceramics in Japan since prehistoric times, while gilt lacquer repairs became fashionable in the sixteenth century. That supports a gradual history of repair techniques, not the claim that one well-known anecdote definitively explains their origin. Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art

In tea culture, ceramic bowls could be valued objects, and repaired crack patterns might be appreciated like scenes in nature. The Government of Japan quotes Nakamura Kunio, owner of Rokujigen, describing kintsugi’s relationship to wabi-sabi and the tea ceremony. Government of Japan

Traditional kintsugi and modern repair kits

Products sold for a kintsugi-style repair may use different materials and should not automatically be treated as traditional kintsugi. Check the actual adhesive and finish: traditional work centers on urushi lacquer and metallic powder, while a modern decorative kit may use a substitute adhesive or imitation pigment. A gold-colored effect is not proof of either natural lacquer or genuine metal. Museum and conservation accounts describe lacquer as central to the traditional process. Urasoe Art Museum; LACMA

Before using a repaired vessel for food or drink, follow the maker’s specific instructions and confirm that every material and the finished repair are suitable for that use. Do not infer food safety, dishwasher safety, or long-term durability from the word “kintsugi” or from a metallic finish.

How to begin learning kintsugi

  • Take a workshop. Japan National Tourism Organization documents hands-on kintsugi workshops. Check the provider’s current location, schedule, materials, and safety guidance before booking. Japan National Tourism Organization
  • Read a dedicated guide. Japan Society reviewed Bonnie Kemske’s Kintsugi: The Poetic Mend, a book covering the technique, its origins, and its metaphorical meaning. Japan Society
  • Practice on an inexpensive, non-valuable piece. If you choose a kit, inspect its ingredients and directions first. A beginner craft repair is not a substitute for specialist conservation of a valued object.

When to consult a conservator

Traditional kintsugi takes time and requires specialized skill, as Japan Society notes in its review of Kemske’s book. For a valuable, historically important, or personally irreplaceable ceramic, consult a qualified conservator before attempting a repair. A casual kit may alter the object and is not evidence of a conservation-grade treatment. Japan Society
