This tutorial follows the Coastal Quilters Guild’s traditional Bow Tie block: it finishes at 12 inches and measures 12½ inches before it is sewn into a quilt. Cut feature and background fabric to the chart below, use a stitch-and-flip step to make four units, then join them into the block. Other patterns called Bow Tie use different sizes and construction, so use the measurements as a matched set rather than mixing charts.
Cutting chart for the Coastal Quilters Guild version
The guild’s October 2019 pattern calls for two Bow Tie fabrics and background fabric. Cut the pieces as follows for one block:
| Fabric | Cutting |
|---|---|
| Bow Tie fabric 1 | Two 3½-inch squares and two 2-inch squares |
| Bow Tie fabric 2 | Two 3½-inch squares and two 2-inch squares |
| Background | Eight 3½-inch squares |
These quantities and dimensions are specific to the guild pattern. Its block finishes at 12 inches; the assembled block should measure 12½ inches square before joining it to other blocks.

How to sew the block
Make the stitch-and-flip corners
- On the wrong side of each 2-inch Bow Tie square, mark a diagonal line from corner to corner.
- Place one marked Bow Tie square right sides together on a 3½-inch background square, aligning the edges at one corner.
- Sew directly on the marked diagonal line.
- Trim the excess fabric ¼ inch from the stitching line, then press the small triangle open.
- Repeat with the remaining small Bow Tie squares and background squares, following the guild pattern’s fabric arrangement.
Assemble the four units
Arrange the completed units with the Bow Tie fabrics forming the bow shape and the background squares at the block’s outer corners. Sew the four units together, matching seams and keeping the bow fabrics in the intended positions. The guild pattern describes the units as 6½ inches; the assembled block should measure 12½ inches unfinished.

Other patterns called Bow Tie use different measurements
Do not combine the cutting chart above with a different Bow Tie design. The name covers several constructions:
| Pattern | Method and size | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| American Quilter’s Society Double Bow Tie | Traditional piecing; 12 inches finished | Uses five 4½-inch background squares, plus two 4½-inch squares and two 2-inch squares for each Bow Tie fabric. It uses corner stitch-and-flip construction and trims the unfinished block to 12½ inches. |
| International Quilt Museum / Mister Domestic Bow Ties | English paper piecing; two versions, each 10 inches finished | Uses paper shapes and a method-specific supply list that includes fabric, milliner needles, thread, a glue pen, cutting mat, and rotary cutter. |
| Riley Blake Designs Bow Tie | Beginner-friendly pattern; 12 inches finished and 12½ inches unfinished | Use its own pattern directions and cutting information rather than assuming it matches the guild chart. |
| National Quilters Circle 3D Bow Tie | Three-dimensional variation made from five squares | The available pattern information does not establish enough cutting dimensions to reproduce its instructions here; consult the demonstration for the full method. |
What tools and fabrics do you need?
For the guild’s traditional block, the required materials are the feature fabrics and background fabric specified in its cutting chart. A ruler and a way to mark diagonal lines will help with accurate cutting and stitching. A rotary cutter and cutting mat are optional conveniences, not requirements for every Bow Tie block. The museum-hosted English paper piecing pattern lists them as part of that specific method, along with paper shapes, milliner needles, thread, and a glue pen.

A dated Bow Tie quilt example
The American Folk Art Museum catalogs Jacob Petershiem’s Bow Tie in Block Work Quilt, made in Haven, Kansas, in 1916 from cotton and sateen. The quilt measures 83 × 69¼ inches. This record documents a quilt with the Bow Tie name by that date; it does not establish who invented the block or when it first appeared.
