Stained glass is both an image-making art and a construction craft: makers design a panel, cut and arrange glass, add color or painted detail, then join the pieces into a structure strong enough to hold together in a window or lamp. The exact process depends on the format—traditional lead-came windows, copper-foil work, and faceted glass are related but distinct methods.
How is stained glass made?
A traditional window begins with a full-scale design, often called a cartoon. It maps the panel’s outline and the shapes of its individual pieces; it can also indicate colors and where painted lines or shading belong. The design is not merely a picture to copy: its divisions determine how the panel will be assembled and where its visible joining lines will fall. The Centre International du Vitrail’s technique overview describes the cartoon as the basis for making the window.
- Design and enlarge the cartoon. The maker develops the image and transfers it to the intended dimensions.
- Select the glass. Glass is chosen for its color, transparency, texture, and intended place in the image.
- Score and break each piece. A steel-wheel glass cutter scores the surface; the glass is then broken along the score to make the required shape. The cutter is the main modern tool identified by the Centre International du Vitrail.
- Add any painted detail. Lines, shading, and other surface details may be applied and fired onto the glass.
- Assemble the panel. In lead-came work, each piece fits into a lead channel; the joints are soldered, gaps are puttied, and the finished panel is supported in its opening.
These steps describe a traditional leaded window, not every object called stained glass. A lampshade, a copper-foil panel, and a thick, faceted-glass installation require different assembly choices.
How do you cut stained glass?
Cutting starts with the shape marked out from the cartoon. The maker guides a steel-wheel cutter across the glass to make a controlled score, then applies pressure so the glass breaks along that line. The score is not a saw cut: it creates a path for a break, so a steady scoring line and a shape suited to the glass matter.

Each piece must fit its intended place in the design and its joining system. In lead-came construction, the came’s channel accommodates the edge of the glass. Cutting and fitting therefore serve both the image and the panel’s assembly; the outlines between pieces become part of the finished composition.
How did makers add color and painted detail?
Color can be part of the glass itself or added as a fired surface treatment. The Victoria and Albert Museum’s introduction to stained glass explains several distinct methods:

- Pot-metal color: Metallic oxides are added to the glass batch before melting, coloring the glass throughout.
- Flashed glass: When a deep color such as red would be too dark for light to pass through easily, makers could fuse a thin layer of colored glass over clear glass. The thin colored layer produces a lighter effect than a thick piece of the same color.
- Painted detail: Lines and shading can be painted onto the glass and fired so the detail is fixed to its surface.
- Silver stain: Applied to the reverse of the glass and fired, silver stain produces tones from pale yellow to deep orange. The V&A identifies it as an important 14th-century innovation.
These techniques can be combined within a window. The cartoon can guide not only the arrangement of colored pieces but also the painted marks that give figures and forms definition.
What holds stained-glass pieces together?
In a traditional lead-came window, H-shaped strips of lead fit around the edges of individual glass pieces. The lead retains the glass and creates the dark lines that divide the image. Makers solder the lead joints, work glazing putty into gaps to weatherproof the panel, and attach the completed panel to iron support work in the opening. The Centre International du Vitrail describes this sequence in its account of the technique.

Other construction systems change how the edges are joined. Copper-foil work wraps the edges of individual glass pieces in foil before they are soldered. Faceted dalle de verre uses thick pieces of glass set into a matrix. The Stained Glass Association of America includes leaded, art-glass, and faceted forms in its overview; these terms cover different approaches, not interchangeable steps in one universal process.
How does Tiffany-style lamp work differ from a leaded window?
Tiffany Studios’ lampshade production shows how the format changes the workflow. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s record for a Tiffany Studios soldering iron, makers used brass templates to cut pieces and assembled them over a rounded wooden form before securing them with soldered lead. The Met’s collection record also documents related working materials, including a workbench, wooden model, cartoons, glass-cutting tools, foil, and soldering equipment.

A rounded shade needs pieces shaped and positioned over a form, rather than fitted into a flat window panel. The shared elements—templates, cut glass, and soldering—do not make the two formats identical.
Why is stained glass an unusual craft?
Stained-glass makers must coordinate image, material, and structure. A design is divided into pieces that can be cut and joined; glass color must work with transmitted light; and the joining lines must both hold the panel together and contribute to its appearance. A painted line can supply detail that would be impractical to form from separate pieces, while a change in construction method changes the visible seams and the way the object is supported.

The V&A notes that stained-glass windows were especially popular in Europe from about 1150 to 1550, appearing in churches, civic buildings, and elite homes. The history is not a single fixed recipe: makers adapted designs and decorative methods over time, including the development of silver stain. For a different kind of encounter with the process, The Stained Glass Museum in Ely describes learning resources and practical workshop activity.
Is stained-glass work dangerous because of lead?
Lead exposure is a genuine consideration in traditional stained-glass work, especially where lead came or solder is handled. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists stained-glass making and soldering among activities that may involve lead hazards in its lead-prevention guidance. Its practical recommendations include good hygiene, well-ventilated work, suitable personal protective equipment, hand washing, wet cleaning or a HEPA-filter vacuum, and limiting dust carried out on clothing and shoes. This is general prevention guidance, not a complete studio safety plan; workplace settings should follow applicable requirements and qualified safety advice.
A 1980 study by Landrigan and colleagues measured blood lead levels in 12 professional stained-glass workers, five hobbyists, and four family members. It reported mean levels of 20.7 µg/dL for professionals, 11.6 µg/dL for hobbyists, and 11.3 µg/dL for family members. Those small-sample results are historical evidence, not a current estimate of exposure among stained-glass makers. The study is indexed in CDC Stacks.
