To press flowers, arrange fresh, dry specimens between clean absorbent paper, apply even pressure, and leave them in a warm, dry place until they are completely dry. Flat, simple flowers are easiest for beginners. A protected heavy book works for a small project; a reusable press is more practical for repeated batches.
Which flowers are easiest to press?
Choose flowers in good condition, before they wilt. Flat flowers and leaves usually make the most straightforward specimens: pansies and ferns are examples recommended by university extension and gardening sources. Flowers with few petals are generally easier to flatten neatly than dense, bulky blooms.

Thick or fleshy flowers can be pressed, but their moisture takes longer to escape. Separate congested parts where needed, and check the absorbent layers early so damp material does not stay trapped.
Pick flowers when they are dry
Harvest after morning dew has dried or before evening dew settles. Avoid flowers wet from rain or dew, and press them promptly after picking. Fresh, dry material is easier to preserve in good condition than wilted or damp material.

What you need
- Fresh, dry flowers or leaves
- Clean absorbent paper, such as blotting paper
- Supportive layers, such as corrugated cardboard
- Even pressure, supplied by a heavy book, weights, straps, or bolts
A dedicated press typically uses two boards with layers of corrugated cardboard and absorbent paper between them. The boards apply pressure; the paper absorbs moisture; and the corrugated layers support the specimens and allow air to move through the stack. A foam sheet may help accommodate bulky or fleshy specimens.
How to press flowers in a book
- Choose a book you can risk. Flowers may stain or warp pages, so do not use a book whose condition matters to you.
- Prepare the pages. Place clean absorbent paper inside the book to protect its pages.
- Arrange the flowers. Lay each flower between the absorbent sheets, spreading petals and leaves into the shape you want. They will flatten, so adjust them before closing the book. Avoid unnecessary overlap.
- Close and weigh the book. Add weight if needed to create even pressure.
- Keep it warm and dry. Leave the book undisturbed in a warm, dry place. Inspect after about 24 hours; if the paper is damp, replace it with dry absorbent paper.
- Check periodically. Continue until each specimen is fully dry rather than relying on a fixed deadline.
How to use a flower press
- Build the layers. Set out one board, then alternate corrugated cardboard and absorbent paper to create a supported stack.
- Position the specimens. Arrange each flower between clean sheets, spreading petals and leaves deliberately. Leave enough space to avoid excessive overlap.
- Finish the stack. Add supportive layers and the second board, then apply even pressure with the press’s straps, bolts, or weights.
- Store it somewhere warm and dry. The stack needs time for moisture to leave the specimens.
- Inspect and refresh damp layers. Check after about 24 hours and replace damp paper or cardboard with dry material. Keep checking periodically until the flowers are fully dry.
If you press flowers regularly or want to work with several at once, a reusable press provides a repeatable stack of supportive, absorbent layers. For an occasional small project, the book method avoids the need for a dedicated press.

How long does flower pressing take?
There is no reliable single deadline: the flower, the method, and the drying conditions all affect the time. The Royal Horticultural Society gives a range of two days to three weeks for its herbarium method. Its educational guidance suggests two to four weeks for the book and press methods. These are different procedural recommendations, not a guarantee for every flower or home.
| Method or guidance | Time stated | How to use the estimate |
|---|---|---|
| RHS herbarium method | Two days to three weeks | Variable with the plant and drying conditions; check the specimen rather than treating the range as a deadline. |
| RHS educational book and press methods | Two to four weeks | Allow for complete drying and replace damp layers as needed. |
Before storing or mounting a flower, confirm that it is fully dry. A damp specimen can undermine the result even if it has been pressed for what seems like a long time.

How to preserve color without damaging the flower
Faster drying can help retain color, but excessive heat can brown flowers. Aim for a warm, dry setting and good absorbent layers rather than using high heat to force the process. Keep airflow and drying in balance with gentle handling, especially for specimens intended for long-term preservation.
Pressing also changes what you preserve: the flower becomes flat. This suits framed pictures, bookmarks, cards, and herbarium-style sheets, but it will not retain a bloom’s three-dimensional form. Pressing also loses information such as the plant’s overall size, growth habit, form, and scent. If those details matter, record them—and the flower’s fresh color—before pressing.

Mount and store pressed flowers
For a craft or display
Once completely dry, mount the flower on a backing of your choice for a card, bookmark, or picture. A straightforward craft project does not automatically need specialist archival materials.
For a long-term botanical specimen
Herbarium-style preservation calls for more care. The Royal Horticultural Society specifies acid-free mounting paper and neutral-pH adhesive; the University of Florida Herbarium describes mounting the dried specimen and its label on heavy paper. Label the specimen and make sure it is thoroughly dry before storage. Specialist guidance emphasizes steady airflow and gentle heat, while avoiding temperatures high enough to discolor or embrittle the material.

Optional supervised alternative: pressing with an iron
RHS educational guidance also describes using an iron with baking or greaseproof paper on low heat. Because this involves a hot appliance, it is an alternative for adult or older-child handling with careful supervision, not the simplest hands-off option. For most beginners, the book or reusable press method is easier to manage.
