Wooden balls can be either blank materials for painting and crafts or pieces of a complete game. For painting projects, look for unfinished wooden spheres; for play, choose a game set with its own balls and the other pieces the game requires.

What can you make with unfinished wooden balls?

Try painting a sphere as a colorful ornament, a character’s head, or a detail for a larger handmade scene. Hobby Lobby’s examples of wood-blank projects include painted peg dolls and toy cars, as well as home-decor projects made with wood-turning shapes. These are craft inspirations, not evidence that every wooden ball is suitable for making a toy.

Simple painting approach
- Choose a ball whose listed diameter suits the project, and check that its surface is unfinished if you want paint to adhere directly to the wood.
- Paint a base coat and let it dry before adding smaller details. For a face or pattern, use a fine brush or a paint pen appropriate for the surface.
- Let the paint dry fully before handling or assembling the piece. Follow the paint maker’s directions for drying and any protective finish.
Craft blanks and game balls are different purchases
A loose craft sphere is a material, not a complete game piece. A game set may include balls made for a particular activity along with its target, pins, hoops, or mallets. Janod’s catalog illustrates how much these sets can differ:

How to choose wooden balls for a project or game
