Choose ACDSee Photo Studio if your work starts with organizing and developing photographs; choose GIMP if it starts with manipulating pixels, building composites, painting, or making graphics. They overlap in editing, but they are not direct substitutes: ACDSee combines photo-library tools and RAW development with editing, while GIMP is a free, open-source raster editor. If you need both a serious photo workflow and detailed compositing, using a RAW/catalog app alongside GIMP may make more sense than forcing either to do everything.
Quick comparison
| If you need… | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| To catalog, rate, search, and develop a large photo library | ACDSee Photo Studio | Its Media and Develop workflows are built around organizing and processing photographs. |
| A free editor for layers, masks, composites, painting, and pixel-level retouching | GIMP | These are central strengths of its raster-editing workflow. |
| One commercial Windows application for photo management, RAW, and layered editing | ACDSee Ultimate | Ultimate combines the photographic workflow with layered tools; confirm the current edition feature list. |
| A no-license-cost RAW-to-composite workflow | darktable or RawTherapee plus GIMP | The RAW processor develops camera files; GIMP handles detailed pixel editing. |
| Occasional edits to JPEGs, screenshots, or artwork | Usually GIMP | A full photo catalog may be unnecessary if you do not regularly manage camera originals or batches. |
ACDSee’s current Windows family includes Home 2026, Professional 2026, and Ultimate 2026. The comparison changes materially by edition, so “ACDSee” alone is not a precise feature set. Its separate Mac product line should also be evaluated on its own rather than assumed to match Windows editions. See ACDSee’s edition comparison and Photo Studio for Mac.

What each program is designed to do
ACDSee Photo Studio: a photographic workflow
ACDSee is aimed at people who need to move through a collection of photographs: browse folders, catalog files, add ratings and metadata, find images, develop RAW files, and process groups of pictures. Its Media mode uses a database-driven catalog, while Develop mode provides non-destructive photographic adjustments. Ultimate adds layered editing to that workflow; Home and Professional do not have an identical feature set. ACDSee describes the product family’s capabilities at its photo-editing software page.
GIMP: a raster-editing workspace
GIMP is most at home when you open an image and work on its contents: combine layers, make selections and masks, clone or heal, paint, add text, create textures, or build a composite. It is free and open source; the official project site is gimp.org. It is not a Lightroom-style photo-library manager, and a GIMP installation by itself does not provide a complete RAW-development workflow.

Compare the actual ACDSee edition
| Edition | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Home 2026 | Enthusiast or casual photographers who want organization and mainstream editing. | Confirm that its RAW, editing, and batch features cover your routine; do not assume it includes Ultimate’s full layered or AI toolset. |
| Professional 2026 | Photographers prioritizing RAW development, cataloging, metadata, ratings, and batch work. | Choose it when photographic control matters more than Ultimate’s full layered-editing feature set. |
| Ultimate 2026 | Photographers who want cataloging, RAW, batch work, layered editing, and applicable AI tools in one Windows application. | Verify the specific tools and operating-system support you need before buying. |
ACDSee’s comparison page displayed regular US-dollar prices of $59.99 for Home 2026, $99.99 for Professional 2026, and $149.99 for Ultimate 2026 on August 16, 2026. Those are dated price signals, not a guarantee of today’s price; the same page’s promotions had ended August 5, 2026. Check the current comparison page for current pricing and licensing terms.
Organization and cataloging
This is the clearest dividing line. ACDSee’s Media mode is designed to organize and search a photographic archive with folder browsing, cataloging, ratings, filtering, grouping, metadata, duplicate finding, and face tools, with feature availability varying by edition. That is useful when the problem is not just editing one image but finding the right image among thousands.
GIMP opens and edits files; it is not intended to replace a dedicated photo catalog. If you have tens of thousands of photographs and need searches by date, tag, rating, camera, or face, do not plan on GIMP alone as your library manager.
Protect the archive before committing
- Find out whether the information you rely on—ratings, tags, and adjustments—is written into image metadata, stored in sidecar files, held in ACDSee’s database, or split between them. Do not assume it will transfer identically to another application.
- Back up the original image files and the catalog or database, and document where each is stored. Treat a catalog as useful application data, not as a substitute for backing up the photographs.
- Before moving a large library or changing applications, test a representative folder. Check whether another program can read the metadata and whether your edits remain available.
- If you may migrate later, try the intended export or transfer route first rather than relying on an undocumented assumption about portability.
RAW development and non-destructive editing
ACDSee handles photographic development in the same application
ACDSee advertises RAW support for more than 750 camera models, but that vendor figure does not guarantee support for your exact camera, firmware, RAW variant, or edition. Check your camera against the version you plan to use. ACDSee’s help documentation describes Develop mode as non-destructive for RAW, JPEG, and other supported file types: Ultimate 19 help and Professional 19 help. These are version-specific help files, so use the current edition’s documentation for current behavior.
GIMP works best after a separate RAW processor
GIMP does not provide a complete native RAW-development workflow. Its documentation points users toward darktable or RawTherapee for processing camera RAW files before handing the resulting image to GIMP. See the GIMP user FAQ and the project’s development update. For a free workflow, develop in darktable or RawTherapee, then use GIMP for pixel-level work. This means learning and managing two applications rather than getting everything in one.
“Non-destructive” means different things here
ACDSee’s Develop workflow is intended for revisiting photographic adjustments across images. GIMP 3.x is no longer accurately described as entirely destructive: GIMP 3.0 introduced non-destructive filters, and GIMP 3.2 added further non-destructive layer capabilities. The exact options depend on the version, tool, layer type, and file format. See the GIMP 3.0 release notes and GIMP 3.2 announcement.

- Edit and Share digital photos and other images
- Improve photo quality, adjust the color balance, crop, rotate, resize, and more
- Add text, frames, clipart, and more to your photos
- Fun filters such as, sepia, oil paint, cartoon and more.
- Use touch-up tools to remove red-eye and blemishes
Neither label means every exported image remains editable. Saving a flattened JPEG or PNG discards the layer structure. In GIMP, keep an editable project in XCF; for either application, preserve original camera files and verify that adjustment data and metadata survive any export or migration you care about.
Layers, compositing, painting, and retouching
For a creator whose work is primarily a composite, painting, or graphic, GIMP is the stronger free fit. Its raster workflow centers on layers, selections, masks, brushes, cloning, healing, text, and plug-ins or scripts. GIMP 3.0 and 3.2 improve layer organization and non-destructive operations, but those updates do not turn it into a photo catalog or RAW manager.
ACDSee Ultimate is attractive when you want layered editing without leaving a catalog-and-RAW workflow. ACDSee lists layers, masks, blend modes, and AI object selection or masking among relevant capabilities; see its comparison page and Ultimate 2026 product sheet. That convenience does not establish that it is better than GIMP for every intricate composite, painting technique, or plug-in-dependent task. Test your own work and tools.
For raster-oriented posters and social graphics, either may work, depending on how much you value catalog integration versus flexible layer editing. Neither should be assumed to replace specialist vector illustration, page-layout, or CMYK prepress software without checking the delivery requirements.

Batch processing
ACDSee is the more turnkey option when the task is repeated across many photographs: resizing, conversion, renaming, applying presets, or exporting a shoot. GIMP can be automated through procedures, scripts, plug-ins, or external utilities, but an everyday batch workflow may take more setup. Before choosing, try representative jobs—such as resizing 500 images for a site, adding a watermark, converting a set of RAW files, or preparing separate web and print exports—rather than assuming that a feature name matches your process.
AI tools and plug-ins
ACDSee lists AI denoise, super-resolution, presets, object selection or masking, and face-related catalog features in applicable editions. Availability is edition- and version-dependent, and a listed feature does not establish result quality. Test difficult subjects such as hair, foliage, low-light noise, and repeated batch processing. Check the exact release for processing location, account requirements, and privacy terms; do not infer local or cloud behavior from the marketing label alone.

- Create stunning photos and videos with powerful AI tools, intuitive editing, and eye-catching effects.
- Enhanced Screen Recording - Capture screen & webcam together, export as separate clips, and adjust placement in your final project.
- AI Object Mask - Auto-detect & mask any object, even in complex scenes, to highlight elements and add stunning effects.
- AI Object Removal with Object Detection - Clean up photos fast with AI that detects and removes distractions automatically.
- AI Image Enhancer with Face Retouch - Clearer, sharper photos with AI denoising, deblurring, and face retouching.
GIMP’s extensibility comes through its own tools, plug-ins, and scripting ecosystem, not an equivalent built-in ACDSee-style AI catalog and enhancement suite. Plug-ins can be version-, platform-, or maintenance-dependent, especially across the change from older GIMP 2.10 tutorials to GIMP 3.x. ACDSee supports selected Photoshop plug-ins in specified products; consult its supported Photoshop plug-ins page rather than assuming any Photoshop extension will work.
Formats, handoffs, and moving between applications
ACDSee advertises support for more than 100 formats, and selected 2026 editions support specified Photoshop plug-ins. GIMP’s native editable project format is XCF; GIMP 3.0 improved PSD export and added or improved support for other formats, according to its release notes.

Format compatibility is not the same as full round-trip editing. A PSD may open while smart objects, adjustment layers, text, masks, effects, or other components behave differently or fail to remain editable. Likewise, a RAW file is source camera data, not simply another bitmap; the processor affects rendering, detail, noise reduction, and lens correction. Test a representative sample of your own files, layers, and metadata before moving a working archive. Exporting to a flattened JPEG or PNG will not preserve the original layer structure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose by the job you actually do
You need to organize a large photo library
Choose an ACDSee edition whose catalog features fit the way you search, rate, and annotate. Back up the catalog and test metadata portability. GIMP alone is not a comparable library manager.
You develop RAW shoots regularly
Choose ACDSee if you want RAW development and cataloging in one application and your camera is supported by the edition you will use. Choose darktable or RawTherapee plus GIMP if avoiding a software license matters more than keeping the workflow in one program.
You make complex composites, paint, or retouch
Choose GIMP if you want a free raster-editing workspace and do not need an integrated catalog. Consider ACDSee Ultimate if keeping photographic development and layer editing together is worth paying for, then test its tools against your real projects.

- Make your photos look better than ever with Lightroom (desktop, mobile, and web), and Lightroom Classic (desktop).
- Quick Actions instantly give you suggestions tailored to your photo so you can get the look you want.
- Remove anything in a click. Make distractions vanish with Generative Remove, powered by Adobe Firefly generative AI.
- Edit Lightroom images in Firefly using simple prompts and create stunning videos directly with images.
- Quickly improve image quality using generative upscale with Topaz Gigapixel, now including powerful 4x upscaling.
You mostly edit occasional JPEGs
Start with GIMP if its tools meet your needs. Paying for a catalog-and-RAW workflow is hard to justify if you do not use those capabilities.
You need Linux or work across operating systems
GIMP is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. GIMP’s 3.0.8 release information lists Windows, macOS, and Linux distribution options. Check the exact ACDSee edition and operating system before buying; do not assume its separate Mac line has Windows feature parity.
You hand layered files to Photoshop users
Run a round-trip test with the kinds of files your collaborators actually use. A file opening or exporting successfully does not prove that every effect, smart object, mask, or text element will remain editable.
Cost and alternatives
GIMP has no purchase price. ACDSee is commercial and edition-specific; check current pricing rather than relying on an expired discount. A free GIMP setup can still require time to configure a companion RAW processor, learn two workflows, and manage plug-ins. ACDSee’s cost should be weighed against upgrade terms, edition boundaries, catalog maintenance, and the possibility of migration friction.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If neither choice fits, select an alternative for the unmet job rather than by brand familiarity:
- Affinity Photo is a paid raster editor to consider when you want a Photoshop-style editing alternative, not a catalog-first photo workflow.
- Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop suit users who value a mature catalog-plus-editor ecosystem and accept subscription and account dependence.
- ON1 Photo RAW is another commercial all-in-one photographic workflow to compare with ACDSee.
- Capture One is worth considering for photography-specialized RAW development and tethered work, rather than primarily for composites or illustration.
Final recommendation
Pick ACDSee when cataloging, RAW development, metadata, and batch work are the bottleneck; choose Professional for a photographer-first feature set or Ultimate when its layered tools matter. Pick GIMP when the central task is pixel editing, compositing, painting, or graphic work and you want a free, open-source tool. For photographers who need both a library workflow and sophisticated composites, a dedicated catalog/RAW application plus GIMP is a practical division of labor.
