For a quick two-color spiral, use GIMP’s Spiral filter. For a softer, multicolor effect, use the Gradient tool’s spiral shape. For a single editable line or text that follows a spiral, use a path instead. These are different results: the Spiral filter generates a pattern; it does not twist the pixels in an existing photo.
The menu paths below follow the GIMP 3.x interface described in the official manual. GIMP’s downloads page listed version 3.2.4, released April 17, 2026, as the current stable release when checked on August 18, 2026. Choose the kind of spiral you need
- Filled two-color pattern: Use the Spiral filter.
- Smooth color effect: Use the Gradient tool with a spiral shape.
- Single curved line or outline: Create a path and stroke it.
- Text following a spiral: Use a spiral path, not the raster pattern filter.
- Existing photo twisted into a spiral: Use a distortion workflow; the Spiral filter generates a pattern rather than warping the photo.
- Precise geometric spiral: Create or obtain an SVG path in a vector application and import it.
For a non-destructive workflow, put the effect on a separate layer when your filter workflow allows it. That keeps the source artwork easier to protect and revise.
Make a two-color spiral with the Spiral filter
In the GIMP 3.x manual, the generator is at Filters → Render → Pattern → Spiral…. Its output is a two-color spiral pattern and does not depend on the image’s existing pixels. A new image gives you a clean canvas; a separate transparent layer is useful when you want to keep the pattern apart from other artwork. GIMP Spiral filter documentation

- Create or open an image. For a simple square graphic, 1200 × 1200 pixels is a reasonable starting canvas, not a required setting.
- Add a transparent layer and name it
Spiralif you want to keep the generated design separate. Select that layer. - Choose Filters → Render → Pattern → Spiral….
- Set Type to Linear or Logarithmic, then adjust the center and scale.
- Choose the two colors, set the direction, and tune the balance and rotation while previewing.
- Apply the filter. Crop, mask, recolor, or blend the result if your design calls for it.
What the controls do
- Type: Linear produces more uniform spiral thickness. Logarithmic starts smaller near the center and grows toward the edge.
- X and Y: Shift the pattern’s position or center. Adjust these if the spiral is off-center.
- Radius: Changes the spiral’s scale. Increase or decrease it until the outer turns fit the canvas.
- Balance: Changes the area occupied by each color. If one color dominates, adjust this control.
- Rotation: Changes the spiral’s starting angle.
- Direction: Switches between clockwise and counter-clockwise.
- Color 1 and Color 2: Set the colors used in the pattern. Contrasting colors, such as black and white, make a bold graphic.
The filter also provides on-canvas controls for Radius, Balance, and Rotation, so you can adjust those values directly over the image. The controls and descriptions above are documented in the GIMP Spiral filter manual.
Make a spiral gradient
Choose this method for a soft, colorful spiral rather than crisp two-color bands. GIMP’s Gradient tool offers Spiral (clockwise) and Spiral (counter-clockwise) shapes. The length of your drag determines the spiral gradient’s repeat width: a shorter drag makes tighter repetition, while a longer one makes wider turns. GIMP Gradient tool documentation

- Choose the Gradient tool with G, or go to Tools → Paint Tools → Gradient.
- In Tool Options, choose a gradient, such as foreground-to-background.
- Set Shape to Spiral (clockwise) or Spiral (counter-clockwise).
- Click near the intended center and drag outward. Adjust the drag length to change the repeat width.
- Release to create the gradient. Adjust its line or color stops on the canvas if needed, then press Enter or use the tool’s apply behavior when the current interface requires it.
Use the tool’s other options when they solve a specific problem: Reverse swaps the gradient direction; Repeat controls how it extends or repeats, including sawtooth and triangular-wave patterns; and Offset changes where the gradient begins. Blend color space options include Perceptual RGB, Linear RGB, and CIE Lab. Dithering can reduce visible banding. The tool also permits on-canvas editing of endpoints and color stops. Draw a spiral line with Paths
Use a path for a single line, an outline, or a curve you may want to edit before stroking. GIMP paths are editable Bézier curves, so you can move nodes and handles; drawing one by hand is flexible but is not a quick way to create a mathematically exact spiral. Activate the Paths tool with B or choose Tools → Paths. GIMP Paths tool documentation

- Select the Paths tool and click and drag to place curved nodes around the spiral you want.
- Continue adding nodes, then adjust their Bézier handles to smooth the curve. Use the tool’s design and edit behaviors as needed.
- Keep the path for later editing; open the Paths dialog if you need to select it.
- Choose Stroke Path. Select the line width, solid color or brush, and antialiasing options, then stroke onto a new layer.
The Paths tool also supports converting paths to selections, filling them, and importing or exporting them. For exact geometry, use an SVG spiral made in a vector application rather than treating a hand-drawn GIMP path as mathematically precise.
Put text on a spiral
Text follows a path, not the raster pixels produced by the Spiral filter. Start with a spiral path you create or import, then create the text with the Text tool and use GIMP’s text-to-path command. Select the resulting text path and use the path for placement, selection, filling, or stroking as your design requires. Keep the original spiral path, or duplicate it before editing, so you retain a usable route.

If text starts on the wrong side or travels the wrong way, change the path’s start anchor or reverse its direction. GIMP’s Paths documentation describes how these path properties affect text placement and where stroking begins. Paths tool and path context menu

This is a distortion task, not pattern generation. The Spiral filter creates a new pattern independent of the image content, so applying it will not curl a photograph. Look for an appropriate whirl or swirl distortion among the filters available in your installed GIMP version; menu names and locations should be checked in that version rather than assumed from a different release.

Troubleshoot common spiral problems
The Spiral filter is missing
- Check your GIMP version in the About dialog; a tutorial for GIMP 2.10 may show different wording from GIMP 3.x.
- In the GIMP 3.x manual, the path is Filters → Render → Pattern → Spiral…. Consult the manual for your installed version if the menu differs.
- If you want to twist an image rather than generate a pattern, look for a distortion filter instead.
The center or scale is wrong
For the Spiral filter, adjust X and Y to reposition the center and Radius to change scale. For a gradient, start the drag closer to the intended center and change its length to alter repeat width. A hand-drawn path can be reshaped by moving nodes and handles.
One color dominates
Adjust Balance in the Spiral filter; it controls the area balance between the two colors.

- Work at a larger resolution and scale down once, rather than repeatedly enlarging a small raster result.
- Use antialiasing where the tool offers it.
- For a gradient with visible bands, try dithering.
- Keep the design on its own layer so you can revise it without damaging the rest of the artwork.
The Gradient tool documentation describes dithering and adaptive supersampling as ways to reduce visible banding or jagged transitions where applicable.
You need a transparent spiral
Create a transparent layer before generating or painting the spiral. Remove unwanted areas with a mask or selection, then export as PNG if the transparency must be retained. Filter behavior can vary with the active layer, selection, and version, so check the result on your actual layer before relying on it.
You need one line, text placement, or exact geometry
Use a path or imported SVG rather than the two-color Spiral filter. For text that runs in the wrong direction, reverse the path or change its start point; retain a duplicate if you want to preserve the original route.
