Adobe first brought Photoshop, Adobe Express, and Acrobat workflows into ChatGPT in December 2025. By September 2026, Adobe described a unified plugin spanning multiple Adobe tools, with interactive controls for editing images and designs and reviewing PDFs. It is a distribution and workflow expansion—not the full desktop apps inside ChatGPT, and the available sources do not establish its effect on adoption or revenue.
What Adobe launched—and what changed
Adobe announced Photoshop, Adobe Express, and Acrobat in ChatGPT on December 10, 2025. At launch, Adobe described natural-language requests for editing photos, customizing designs, and transforming documents. Its September 29, 2026 update describes a unified Adobe plugin and interactive editing experiences for images, designs, and PDFs.
Adobe said the 2026 update would begin rolling out globally on ChatGPT web and app on September 29. The current interface may vary by ChatGPT surface. Adobe’s current product page describes a plugin spanning Photoshop, Lightroom, Firefly, Acrobat, Premiere, Express, InDesign, Illustrator, and more. It also says the plugin does not include every feature from each Adobe app; some tools require sign-in, and some require an eligible paid Adobe plan.

Adobe reported that ChatGPT had 800 million weekly users in its 2025 launch release. This is an Adobe-attributed figure from that announcement, not a current or independently verified user count. Read Adobe’s launch announcement.

What Photoshop can do in ChatGPT
Adobe’s launch announcement described localized image adjustments, brightness, contrast and exposure controls, and effects such as Glitch and Glow. In its September 2026 update, Adobe added selecting part of an image and using contextual controls such as hue, saturation, and contrast. These are supported conversational and interactive tasks, not full Photoshop feature parity.
A typical workflow is:
- Provide an image in ChatGPT.
- Name Photoshop or select it through the Adobe plugin.
- Describe the change you want, then use available controls to refine it.
- Review the result and, if supported, continue the work in Adobe.
For exacting work, check whether the controls and file continuity meet your needs. The plugin does not include every native Photoshop feature, and the sources do not provide an independent evaluation of editing quality. See Adobe’s Photoshop examples.
What Adobe Express can do
At launch, Adobe described browsing and customizing templates, replacing text and images, animating designs, and making iterative edits in chat. Adobe’s current page also describes design and video workflows. Express is a natural fit for quick, template-oriented work; a more involved project may need additional tools or a paid plan.

Can ChatGPT edit a PDF with Acrobat?
Adobe’s launch description for Acrobat included PDF editing, text and table extraction, organizing and merging files, compression, conversion, and redaction. The September 2026 update describes opening a PDF in a side panel to revise text or highlight passages, and using selected content as context for the conversation.

These are described capabilities, not a guarantee that every PDF task is supported or that a conversational result meets legal, accessibility, or technical requirements. How to use Adobe tools in ChatGPT
- Open a supported ChatGPT surface and start or continue a conversation.
- Choose the Adobe plugin or name the relevant tool, such as Photoshop, Express, or Acrobat.
- Attach or select the file or design when appropriate.
- Describe the task and use any interactive controls that appear.
- Review the result; sign in if needed for additional features or to save supported work to Creative Cloud.
Adobe says users can start without an Adobe account. Signing in unlocks additional features, including generative AI workflows and saving supported work to Creative Cloud. Adobe also says supported work can be continued in Adobe when signed in. The exact interface can vary by ChatGPT surface.
Is Adobe in ChatGPT free?
Adobe described the three integrations as free to ChatGPT users globally at their December 2025 launch. That was a historical launch statement, not a promise of permanent free access or current access to every feature. The current plugin description says some tools require sign-in and some require an eligible paid Adobe plan.

Why this looks like a strategic pivot
Traditional software use often begins by opening an app and learning its interface. A conversational plugin lets a user start by describing an intended outcome, then use supported Adobe tools and controls in that workflow. This is an interpretation of Adobe’s product direction as a shift toward intent-first distribution.
Adobe describes making its tools available where people already work and enabling supported work to continue in Adobe. That supports a reading of distribution and workflow expansion. The sources reviewed do not establish adoption, revenue impact, subscriber growth, retention, or a specific financial motive. Calling the move a “strategic pivot” is analysis, not a measured outcome.
Adobe’s later product description also broadens the original story: the plugin now spans multiple Adobe tools rather than only the three apps named at launch. Adobe’s current page sets an important limit, however: the plugin does not include every feature from each app.

Who should consider the plugin?
The plugin may suit people who want to try supported image, design, or PDF tasks through conversation, or who want to move between ChatGPT and Adobe tools. It may be a poor fit when a workflow depends on a specific feature absent from the plugin, or when account, plan, or organizational requirements cannot be met.
Some capabilities require an eligible paid Adobe plan, but the plugin’s presence alone does not mean a paid subscription is required for every task. Check Adobe’s current product page before choosing a plan.
