In Illustrator, the precise term for skewing text is shearing. To give ordinary live text a straight diagonal slant, select the text object and choose Object > Transform > Shear. Enter a shear angle, choose an axis, preview the result, and click OK.

Use Type > Type on a Path > Skew only when the text is already attached to a path. For perspective, curved distortion, or a custom warped effect, use a different tool.

The fastest way to skew ordinary text

  1. Create or select your text with the Type tool.
  2. Switch to the Selection tool and click the text object so the complete object is selected.
  3. Choose Object > Transform > Shear.
  4. Enter a value in Shear Angle.
  5. Choose Horizontal, Vertical, or Angle as the shear axis.
  6. Turn on Preview, check the reference point, and click OK.

For a conventional right-leaning graphic slant, start around 10° to 15°, then judge the result visually. This is only a starting point: the best angle depends on the typeface, size, word length, and design.

Illustrator’s Shear command accepts angles from −359° to 359°. Adobe’s current documentation describes the command as slanting an object relative to a reference point. See Adobe’s Shear objects guide.

What the Shear settings do

Shear Angle

The angle controls how strongly the text leans. A small value produces a restrained oblique effect; a large value can make the letters and spacing look exaggerated. Positive and negative values lean in opposite directions.

Horizontal, Vertical, and Angle axes

  • Horizontal: shifts the top and bottom edges sideways relative to a horizontal axis. This is the usual choice for a straight italic-like slant.
  • Vertical: shifts the left and right edges up or down relative to a vertical axis.
  • Angle: applies the shear along a custom axis.

Reference point

The reference-point grid determines where Illustrator anchors the transformation. Changing it can change the apparent position of the text even when the angle stays the same. If the text jumps unexpectedly, undo the change, select the center reference point, and try again with Preview enabled.

Objects and patterns

For text with a solid fill, the pattern options usually make no visible difference. If the text contains a pattern or texture, check whether Illustrator should transform the object, the pattern, or both. Adobe distinguishes between Transform Objects and Transform Patterns; transforming only the pattern leaves the object’s shape unchanged.

Skew text with the Shear tool

The Shear tool is useful when you want to experiment visually rather than enter an exact value.

  1. Select the text object with the Selection tool.
  2. Choose the Shear tool from the toolbar. It may be grouped with other transform tools.
  3. Drag in the document window to slant the text.
  4. To use another origin, click a different point before dragging to establish a new reference point.

Hold Shift when you need a constrained horizontal or vertical shear. Manual dragging is fast, but it is less repeatable than entering a numerical angle. Use the Shear dialog when several objects must receive the same treatment.

Adobe identifies the Shear tool as the tool for slanting or skewing an object relative to a reference point. Its Illustrator tools reference explains the related tool behavior.

Adjust the effect in the Transform panel

  1. Select the text object.
  2. Choose Window > Transform.
  3. Choose the desired reference point in the panel’s reference-point grid.
  4. Enter a value in the Shear field.

This method is convenient when you want to keep adjusting a selected object numerically. Pay attention to the reference point: anchoring the shear from the left, center, or right can change where the text sits on the artboard.

Skew text on a path

If your text follows a line, curve, circle, or other path, use the dedicated type-on-a-path effect instead of the ordinary Shear command:

  1. Select the type-on-a-path object with the Selection tool.
  2. Choose Type > Type on a Path > Skew.

This is not the same as Object > Transform > Shear. Type on a Path > Skew changes how text behaves along its path. It is appropriate when the letters must follow a curve or shaped baseline; ordinary object shearing is appropriate for a straight, uniform slant.

Related type-on-a-path effects include Rainbow, 3D Ribbon, Stair Step, and Gravity. Adobe’s guides to effects on type paths and creating type on a path cover path placement, flipping, alignment, and spacing.

Make perspective-style text instead

A simple shear gives the text a uniform linear slant. It does not make the headline recede into space. For a billboard, vanishing-point, or receding perspective effect, use the Free Transform tool.

  1. Select the text object.
  2. Choose the Free Transform tool, or press E.
  3. Use the appropriate corner handles for perspective or free distortion.

Adobe describes perspective distortion as changing an object’s size while maintaining its angle, while free distortion changes both size and angle through corner-handle manipulation. These methods can produce uneven letter proportions, so use them when that distortion is part of the design rather than when you need a clean italic-like slant. See Adobe’s Free Transform documentation.

Keep the text editable

Apply the shear while the type is still live. That lets you change the wording, font, weight, tracking, kerning, point size, and shear amount as the design develops.

Do not use Type > Create Outlines as the first step simply because the text needs to be skewed. Outlining removes normal text editability. If a later production workflow requires vector outlines or advanced reshaping, duplicate the live text first, hide or lock the duplicate, and outline only the working copy.

Shear a single character

Selecting the entire text object applies one consistent transformation to the word or text frame. For a custom lettering treatment, you can work with individual characters, but this requires more manual control and can create uneven spacing or alignment.

Illustrator’s Touch Type tool lets you move, scale, and rotate individual characters. It is not the same as applying one uniform shear to a complete word. Treat character-by-character adjustments as an advanced variation, not the normal skew workflow.

Shear, rotate, scale, or warp?

Desired result Use What changes
Straight, uniform diagonal slant Object > Transform > Shear Slants the object relative to an axis.
Quick visual adjustment Shear tool Lets you drag the slant manually.
Turn the whole word Rotate Turns the object around a reference point; it does not make the letters oblique.
Narrower or wider letters Horizontal scaling or a condensed/expanded font Changes width, not slant.
Text along a curve Type > Type on a Path > Skew Changes text behavior along a path.
Receding or billboard perspective Free Transform Changes proportions and often the angle.
Organic curved distortion Warp or envelope-style tools Bends or reshapes the letterforms.

Should you shear a font or use an italic font?

If the typeface includes a native italic or oblique style, try it first when typographic polish matters. A designed italic often includes adjusted letterforms, spacing, and proportions that a mechanically sheared upright font does not.

Shearing is still useful when you want a deliberate graphic treatment, when the font has no suitable italic, or when the same geometric slant must be applied consistently to artwork. If the real problem is width, choose a condensed or expanded face instead of using shear.

Fix common skewing problems

The text rotated instead of skewing

Press Ctrl/Cmd + Z, select the text object again, and use Object > Transform > Shear. Rotation turns the whole object; shearing shifts one part relative to another. If you use Free Transform, be careful not to drag the wrong bounding-box handle.

For Free Transform shearing, Adobe documents different modifier combinations by platform: Ctrl + Alt on Windows and Option + Command on macOS. These keys are not universal across operating systems.

I cannot find the Skew command

Check which kind of text is selected. Ordinary text uses Object > Transform > Shear. The Type > Type on a Path > Skew option appears when a type-on-a-path object is selected.

The text moved or disappeared

Undo, select only the intended text object, open the Shear dialog, choose the center reference point, and enable Preview. A reference point far from the text can make the object appear to move dramatically during the transformation.

The slant looks too extreme

Reduce the angle and inspect the spacing. Try the font’s native italic or oblique style instead. Tracking and kerning may also need adjustment after a strong shear, particularly with long words or display type.

The pattern or texture changed

Reopen the Shear command and review the object and pattern transformation options. A pattern fill can move or slant differently from the text shape depending on which option is enabled.

A liquify tool will not affect the live text

Adobe states that liquify tools cannot be used on objects containing text, graphs, or symbols. Use Shear, Free Transform, or a suitable warp method instead. Convert a duplicate to outlines only when more advanced reshaping is genuinely necessary; keep the original live text available.

FAQ

How do I skew text in Illustrator without rotating it?

Select the text object and choose Object > Transform > Shear. Enter an angle and preview the result; rotation turns the whole object, while shearing creates a slant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I skew text and keep it editable?

Yes. Apply the shear to live type and keep editing the wording, font, and other type settings. Create outlines only if a later workflow requires vector shapes.

Why can’t I find Type on a Path > Skew?

That option applies to text attached to a path. For ordinary text, use Object > Transform > Shear.

Should I use shear or an italic font?

Try a native italic or oblique style when typographic polish matters; it may have letterforms and spacing designed for that style. Shear is useful for a deliberate graphic slant or when no suitable style is available.

Bottom line

For normal editable text, use Object > Transform > Shear and enter a modest angle. Use the Shear tool for quick experimentation, the Transform panel for numeric adjustments, Type on a Path > Skew for path text, and Free Transform for perspective. Keep a live-text copy until the design is finished.
