Adobe Firefly Image 3 was Adobe’s 2024 image-generation model, not a separate downloadable app. It launched in beta in Photoshop and the Firefly web app with Adobe-promised improvements to prompt understanding, composition, detail, lighting and text rendering. Firefly still offers a limited free tier, but that does not guarantee Image 3 access in 2026: Adobe has moved its lineup to newer models and removed Image 3 from Photoshop’s Generative Fill workflow.
For a current workflow, use the model selector in Firefly to see what your account and region expose. In Photoshop 27.6 and later, Adobe recommends Firefly Fill & Expand instead of Image 3.

What Firefly Image 3 was
Firefly is Adobe’s broader creative-AI platform. Firefly Image 3 was one foundation model within that platform, introduced on April 23, 2024. Adobe initially made it available in beta through Photoshop and the Firefly web application for image ideation and production mockups.
That distinction matters. Firefly now includes newer Adobe models and, in some workflows, third-party partner models. A current Firefly account is not necessarily an Image 3 account, and Photoshop’s generative tools do not expose every model available on the web.

Adobe’s launch description positioned Image 3 for mood boards, concept development, marketing visuals, reference-driven exploration and other early-to-mid production tasks. Its advertised strengths were better interpretation of complex prompts, richer detail, improved lighting and composition, more convincing people and objects, and stronger typography. Those are Adobe’s product claims rather than independent benchmark results.
Where supported, the mobile workflow produced four variations per generation. That behavior and the available model list can change by device, account, region and rollout.
Is Adobe Firefly free?
Firefly has a free entry tier, but “free” means limited access rather than unlimited Image 3 generation. Adobe’s current plans page describes a free allowance of daily generations across selected image, video and audio models. Limits, eligible models and availability can change.

Generative credits are usage tokens shared across supported Adobe AI features. Allocations reset with the billing cycle and are not the same as unlimited image generation. Some paid plans may offer unlimited use of particular standard features while consuming credits for premium generation; read the current plan terms before subscribing.

How to generate an image in Firefly today
The current interface may not list Image 3. Use the model selector to confirm what is actually available rather than relying on older screenshots.

- Open Adobe Firefly and sign in or create an Adobe account.
- Choose the text-to-image or image-generation tool.
- Enter a prompt, then open the model selector.
- Select an available Adobe model, or a partner model if your workflow offers one.
- Choose an aspect ratio and set Content type to Art, Photo or Auto.
- Generate variations, inspect them, and revise one variable at a time.
- Download the result or continue editing it in an Adobe application.
Adobe’s current web documentation covers the model selector, aspect-ratio controls and Art/Photo/Auto settings: text-to-image instructions. On mobile, tap Text to image, enter a prompt, open the model control, choose the available model, set aspect ratio and content type, then generate: Adobe’s mobile instructions.
Prompting that gives you useful creative options
Build prompts from subject, action or pose, setting, composition, lighting, camera or medium, mood and constraints. Keep the subject and composition fixed while changing only lighting, palette, lens or material when art-directing variations.

Use quotation marks for wording you want depicted, as Adobe’s mobile guidance allows, but manually check every character. “No watermark,” “no extra fingers” and similar constraints can help, yet they are not guarantees. Treat generated lettering as a layout draft; set final copy in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign or another typography tool.
What Image 3 did well—and where it remained unreliable
- Complex prompts: Adobe said Image 3 better interpreted relationships among subjects, setting and composition.
- Detail and lighting: It was promoted as producing richer textures, people, objects and visual effects.
- Reference-led exploration: Reference material could help establish a direction for mood boards and concepts.
- Typography: Text rendering was presented as improved, but long copy, small type, unusual words and exact brand names could still be wrong.
- Consistency: It was not a dependable solution for locked character identity, pixel-level control or a model version guaranteed to remain available.
Commercial use, copyright and Content Credentials
Adobe says Firefly was designed for commercially usable content and describes its own training-data approach in its product materials. That is a policy and product position, not a universal legal clearance for every output.

- logos, trademarks, packaging or recognizable product designs;
- recognizable people or celebrity likenesses;
- famous characters, buildings or artworks;
- medical, financial, political or safety claims;
- exact numbers, labels or legal text.
Adobe’s Firefly FAQ distinguishes features by status, including beta features. Keep the rights to any reference assets, prompts, edits and approvals for important client work, and follow any disclosure or platform rules that apply.
Firefly outputs include Content Credentials, provenance information that can indicate generative-AI creation or editing. Credentials are useful transparency metadata, not copyright registration, proof that every element is cleared, proof of factual truth or an immutable chain of custody. Photoshop Generative Fill
Adobe announced that Photoshop 27.6, released April 28, 2026, removed Image 3 from the Generative Fill model picker. Adobe said versions 26.0–27.5 would retain it temporarily and that service retirement was planned for August 2026. Adobe’s recommended replacement is Firefly Fill & Expand. If Image 3 is absent online, Adobe may have retired it, limited it by region or plan, exposed only newer models in that tool, or changed the interface. Check the live model selector and your account rather than an old tutorial. As of September 2026, Image 3 should be treated as a legacy model; the exact status of an individual account still needs to be confirmed in the app.
Saved documents and custom models
Adobe’s retirement notice says saved Photoshop documents remain accessible even when the model is no longer offered for new generations. Enterprise custom models trained on Image 3 followed a separate transition schedule; Adobe documented generation availability through June 10, 2026 and retraining on newer versions. That schedule does not describe ordinary consumer accounts: enterprise documentation.

Image 3 versus Adobe’s newer direction

Adobe’s current help pages list Image 4, Image 4 Ultra and, in some workflows, Image 5 preview alongside or after Image 3: current model documentation. Newer does not automatically mean better for a particular texture, face, illustration style or edit, but a currently supported model is a safer foundation for a new workflow than a retiring one.
Who should use Firefly now?
Firefly is a strong fit for Adobe users who want browser-based ideation, Photoshop integration, Generative Fill and Expand, quick mood boards, and a free way to test the ecosystem. Existing Creative Cloud subscribers should first check their included credits.
Be cautious if you need unlimited free iteration, guaranteed access to one named model, perfect text, stable character identity or independent legal assurance. Firefly also exposes partner models in some workflows; models from Adobe and third parties may have different behavior, training and licensing terms. Adobe documents that option at use non-Adobe models in Firefly.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Firefly Image 3 mattered as Adobe’s 2024 step toward better prompt-driven creative work, but it is no longer a dependable long-term model choice. Firefly remains free to try with limits; for current projects, select a supported newer model, use Firefly Fill & Expand in Photoshop, and treat every commercial output as material requiring human review.
