Some custom toys read as small sculptures because the artist’s concept and intervention matter as much as the underlying figure. That does not make them automatically unplayable, nor does it mean every designer toy is a one-off. The useful distinction is how an artist transforms—or preserves—a toy form, and whether the result is a single altered object or a production edition.
“More art than action figure” is a continuum, not a category rule
A custom can begin with a recognizable platform figure and still become an authored artwork. The artist may repaint its surfaces, cut or reshape parts, sculpt additions, or combine materials. At the other end, an artist may design a new vinyl or resin character intended for factory production. Both can be sold as collectibles, and either may retain articulation or other play features.

What changes is the emphasis: the object is presented primarily through its concept, authorship, material treatment and finish rather than as a mass-market character with a defined action-figure role.
How artists intervene in a donor figure
Keeping the starting form legible
In a Behance interview, custom vinyl artist Carson Catlin says he is drawn both to a platform figure’s design and to the act of customizing it. He describes respecting the original form so viewers can still identify what the starting figure was. His account mentions customizing a Munny and using markers, brushes, paints, X-Acto knives, a Dremel rotary tool and a heat gun. That is one artist’s working method, not a universal recipe or a beginner-safe equipment list.

Letting the donor drive the concept
Custom artist Mike Strick offered a related but stricter view in a 2013 interview with The Toy Chronicle: “I feel that the donor figure needs to lead the design otherwise a piece becomes less of a custom and more of a mixed media build that happens to contain some toy parts.” His point is about the relationship between intervention and source form, not a legal definition. Some artists preserve the silhouette closely; others deliberately push it toward a new sculptural object.
Surface change versus structural change
- Surface-focused customs: paint, markers, decals, weathering and other finish changes leave most of the original construction intact.
- Structural customs: cutting, heating, drilling or reshaping alter the body, pose or proportions.
- Mixed-media customs: sculpted, fabricated or found additions become part of the composition alongside recognizable toy components.
The more of the donor remains visible, the easier it is to discuss the piece as a transformation of a known toy. When the donor is only a hidden armature or fragment, “custom” may be less informative than “mixed-media sculpture.”

One-off customs and production art toys are different routes
| Route | What it usually means | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| One-off commission | A single existing figure altered for a client | Tenacious Toys’ commission directory lists artists open to one-off custom toy work, custom figures and art toys. Prices vary and buyer and artist deal directly. |
| Artist-designed edition | A new vinyl, PVC or resin figure manufactured in multiple copies | The same directory describes factory-production projects. Its listed minimums are 300 resin figures, 1,000 vinyl or PVC art toys and 3,000 action figures; these are directory requirements, not market statistics, and may change. |
| Retail collectible | A finished production figure offered through a specialist store | A current specialist storefront groups designer art toys with vinyl toys, resin figures, blind boxes and action figures, including collaborations. Categories overlap, but intent and construction differ by product. |
Tenacious Toys says it does not take a kickback, arrange the contracted work, negotiate prices or mediate disputes for directory-listed commissions. Treat the page as a contact path, then establish scope, ownership, revisions, shipping, payment and damage responsibility directly with the artist.
Why price alone cannot define an art toy
Hong Kong artist Eric So, interviewed by OPENERS on November 24, 2024, describes toy-making in conversation with fashion, film, music, sports and broader visual culture. He cautions against judging art toys only by their price: “Only then can we truly call them ‘art toys’ and emphasize their artistic value, not just their price.” The sentence reflects his view that makers should remain true to the original impulse to make toys while considering their inspiration and contribution; it is not a universal test.

That interview reported a 2024 release plan for two Eric So VCD figures based on Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. The article listed an approximate height of 200 mm and an announced price of ¥19,800 each. Those are dated product details from that announcement, not a current-availability statement or a general price benchmark.

- Identify the edition. Ask whether it is a single commissioned custom, a numbered run or an open production collectible.
- Inspect the material and finish. Confirm whether the piece is vinyl, PVC, resin or another format, and look for the actual surface and sculptural treatments. The available sources do not establish comparative durability.
- Study the donor relationship. Can you still recognize the base figure, and does its shape guide the new design? A heavily rebuilt object may function more like mixed-media sculpture.
- Read the artist’s intent. Look for a statement about the idea, references or intervention rather than inferring artistic value from a high price.
- Check play features separately. Articulation, removable parts and handling limits are product-specific. “Art toy” does not by itself mean non-playable.
- Verify the purchase route. For a commission, clarify terms directly with the artist. For a finished edition, confirm current stock, edition information and seller policies with the retailer.
These questions describe differences; they do not produce a reliable ranking of quality, scarcity premium or resale potential. The cited sources provide no market-wide price averages or investment data.

If you want to make one
A maker searching for a blank platform can use the phrase “blank vinyl DIY art toy figure”. Catlin’s Munny work and a current specialist shop’s DIY category show that platform figures are a real route into customization, but no particular Amazon listing, model, stock status or price has been verified here.
Catlin’s interview names a hobby knife, rotary tool, heat gun, paints and brushes among his tools. Consider them examples of one artist’s practice, not a required or tested kit. Cutting, rotary tools and heat can damage a figure and create safety hazards; follow the tool manufacturer’s guidance and work in a suitable ventilated setup.
Where the “art” resides
In a one-off custom, authorship is visible in the decisions applied to a pre-existing form: what is retained, removed, repainted or added. In a production figure, authorship may reside in the original character design, sculpt, collaboration, edition and presentation even though multiple copies exist. A collectible can therefore be both a toy and an art object. The meaningful question is not whether it passes a universal boundary, but what the artist made, how the object was produced and what experience the piece is asking the owner to have.
