Yes—Adobe Fresco can be used without paying. Its core drawing, painting, brush, layering and animation tools are free, including thousands of brushes that were previously treated as premium. Adobe announced that change on October 23, 2024, and its current product information continues to describe Fresco as free on iPhone, iPad and Windows.

“Completely free” does not mean every Adobe service is included. The optional paid Fresco + Photoshop on iPad plan adds premium Adobe Fonts, 100 GB of cloud storage, Photoshop on iPad, Adobe Portfolio and related Creative Cloud benefits. For ordinary painting and illustration, however, a subscription is not required.
What changed with Adobe Fresco?
Fresco originally divided its tools between free and paid tiers. Adobe’s October 23, 2024 announcement removed the paywall from thousands of previously premium brushes and made the main Fresco experience free. This is now an established product status, not a new announcement in 2026.

The free plan is a usable art application rather than a time-limited trial. Adobe’s plan documentation lists the following comparison:

Brushes and painting media
Fresco combines pixel brushes, vector brushes and Live brushes designed to imitate media such as watercolor and oil. You can import custom brushes, use premium shapes and access Creative Cloud brush and color libraries. The free change matters most to artists who previously rejected Fresco because its larger brush catalog appeared to require a subscription.

Animation and drawing aids
Fresco includes frame-by-frame animation and motion-path tools. Adobe’s current iPad listing also describes features such as symmetry, drawing aids, Apple Pencil support and unlimited layers. Treat those claims as iPad-specific evidence rather than assuming identical behavior on every supported platform.
What still costs money?
Payment is mainly for Adobe’s connected services rather than basic painting.
- More cloud storage: the free allowance is 5 GB; the paid plan lists 100 GB.
- Premium Adobe Fonts: these remain associated with the paid plan.
- Photoshop on iPad: it is bundled with the paid Fresco + Photoshop on iPad plan, not the free Fresco-only offering.
- Adobe Portfolio and broader Creative Cloud benefits: these are paid-service benefits, not part of the free art app.
Adobe’s support documentation does not establish a reliable current US dollar price for the paid plan, so check Adobe’s checkout page for the region and date that apply to you.
The 5 GB cloud limit is the important catch
Five gigabytes can be adequate for local sketches and exported finished work, but large high-resolution canvases, PSD-style documents and animation projects can consume it quickly. Adobe explains the storage boundary at its Fresco storage-limit page.

- Export finished work to local storage or another backup service.
- Monitor cloud usage if you keep many editable documents synchronized.
- Delete older cloud documents or upgrade storage when the allowance is full.
- Do not treat Fresco’s cloud documents as your only backup.
If you work locally and export completed files, the 5 GB ceiling may be irrelevant. The paid plan becomes more defensible when you need a large synchronized library across devices.
Do you need an Adobe account?
Adobe’s community announcement says users can begin creating without signing in, but the exact prompt can depend on the current app version and platform. Starting a local document is not the same as using Adobe’s online services.
An Adobe account is relevant for Creative Cloud storage, cloud documents, synchronization, shared libraries and paid services. Adobe’s FAQ discusses account and export behavior at the Fresco FAQ. Check the sign-in prompt in the build you install if account-free creation is important to your workflow.
Where Fresco works
Adobe currently lists Fresco for iPhone, iPad/iPadOS and Windows. It is designed around touch and pen input, but the iPad, iPhone and Windows versions should not be assumed to have identical tools, menus, performance or export options. How to install Fresco
iPhone or iPad
- Open the Apple App Store.
- Search for Adobe Fresco: Draw & Paint App.
- Confirm that the developer is Adobe Inc.
- Install or update the app.
- Open Fresco and create a document.
The US App Store listing identifies Fresco as a free drawing, painting and animation app with in-app purchases: App Store listing. Its iPad listing includes current iPad-specific feature and export information at this iPad page.
Windows
- Open Adobe’s official Fresco page and follow the supported Windows download route.
- Install the Windows version.
- Sign in if the installation path or Creative Cloud features require it.
- Check the Windows feature list before moving an iPad workflow to a Surface or another PC.
Can you export artwork without paying?
Adobe’s FAQ says Fresco supports Publish & Export and Quick Export, including destinations such as Dropbox or another cloud-storage service. That is different from keeping editable documents synchronized in Creative Cloud.

Is Fresco a good Procreate alternative?
There is no universal winner; the better choice depends on your workflow.

Fresco’s distinctive combination is free access, iPhone/iPad/Windows support, raster and vector brushes, Live brushes and Adobe integration. Procreate is a strong iPad-focused alternative with a different purchase model; Krita favors local desktop work; Clip Studio Paint is more compelling for comics and advanced animation.
Who should pay for Fresco?
Choose the paid plan only when one of its extras solves a real problem:
- You need more than 5 GB of synchronized Adobe storage.
- You use premium Adobe Fonts in your artwork.
- You want Photoshop on iPad in the same plan.
- You use Adobe Portfolio or other Creative Cloud services.
- You already subscribe to Adobe and benefit from keeping the workflow connected.
Beginners, hobbyists and artists who draw locally and export their work can generally start with free Fresco. Users who dislike account-based services, want a completely local workflow, need a mature third-party brush ecosystem or require a full professional animation timeline may prefer another application.
Bottom line: Fresco is free, but Adobe’s ecosystem is not
Adobe Fresco is genuinely usable without a subscription. The meaningful 2024 change was free access to its main creative tools and thousands of formerly premium brushes—not merely a free download. The boundaries are clear: 5 GB of cloud storage on the free plan, while premium fonts, 100 GB storage, Photoshop on iPad and Portfolio remain paid benefits.
