Adobe announced updates to Premiere Pro 25 and After Effects 25 on September 10, 2024, ahead of IBC. The headline changes were a new color-management workflow for Premiere and expanded 3D compositing tools for After Effects. Adobe initially made key features available in beta and planned a fall 2024 general release, so the announcement was not a single, completed launch. It is historical coverage—not a guide to Adobe’s latest 2026 versions.
What Adobe announced at IBC 2024
The September 10 announcement covered Premiere Pro 25, After Effects 25, related Substance 3D workflows, and Adobe Stock contributor compensation. Adobe’s own announcements described beta features and a planned fall release; a contemporaneous report said the apps were expected to become generally available in October. These dates describe the 2024 rollout, not current availability. Thurrott’s September 10 report and Adobe’s Premiere announcement provide the original context.

| Application or service | Announced change | Initial status and key limit |
|---|---|---|
| Premiere Pro 25 | Automatic color management, Properties panel, interface and performance updates, and additional camera-format support | Key features were announced in beta with general release planned for fall 2024; performance claims depend on hardware and project conditions. |
| After Effects 25 | More native 3D asset, animation, shadow, and depth workflows | Features were announced as beta or planned updates; it remains a motion-graphics and compositing tool, not a complete 3D production package. |
| Substance 3D and Adobe Stock | New Substance-to-After Effects workflow and a Firefly-related contributor bonus | Substance asset access depends on plan entitlements; the bonus was a specific program, not a permanent royalty promise. |
What changed in Premiere Pro 25
Automatic color management was the central change
Adobe said Premiere would automatically normalize raw and log footage from nearly every camera into consistent SDR or HDR starting results, reducing the need to apply technical LUTs by hand. The system used a wider-gamut working color space based on ACEScct, offered six presets in Sequence Settings and Lumetri settings, and made effects such as Lumetri color-space-aware. Adobe also said the approach would improve consistency when sending material to After Effects through Dynamic Link and added support for additional Canon, Sony, and RED formats. Details are in Adobe’s Premiere Pro color-management announcement.
Automatic normalization is a faster starting point, not a replacement for color decisions or a ban on LUTs. Creative, monitoring, show, and custom transforms still have roles in professional pipelines. Metadata, camera profiles, display calibration, working-space settings, and delivery specifications all affect the result. Before moving an established project, check mixed-camera shots, skin tones, saturated highlights, nested sequences, HDR/SDR outputs, and any Resolve or Dynamic Link handoff.

The Properties panel surfaced controls by selection
The context-sensitive Properties panel was designed to show commonly used adjustments for the selected item—such as video, audio, graphics, or captions—while hiding unrelated controls. It is an interface and workflow change rather than a new editing model, and Adobe did not claim that every control moved there. Editors who rely on traditional panels, keyboard shortcuts, or customized workspaces may prefer to keep those habits; shared workstations should account for layout changes.
Performance, formats, and interface claims
Adobe announced additional hardware acceleration for AVC and HEVC playback, faster playback and rendering, more native camera-format support, and dark, light, and high-contrast interface options. It claimed ProRes exports could be up to three times faster than before. That is Adobe’s maximum claim, not an independently verified or universal result. The actual gain depends on CPU, GPU, drivers, memory, storage, footage, effects, export settings, and operating system. GPU acceleration cannot remove bottlenecks caused by slow storage, intensive noise reduction, third-party effects, or complex compositing.

What changed in After Effects 25
More 3D assets could be brought into a composition
Adobe expanded After Effects’ native 3D workflow so motion designers could composite 3D objects with 2D graphics and live-action footage without first rendering every asset elsewhere. The announcement covered GLB and GLTF imports, embedded keyframe animations, bone-based deformations and skeletal rigs, and the ability to retime embedded animations. For suitable assets, that can shorten the round trip between an animated model and a motion-graphics composition.
Shadows, depth, and scene controls
The announced tools included more realistic and colored shadows, shadow-catcher workflows for placing 3D objects into footage, and depth mapping for Advanced 3D scenes. Camera and light controls were also brought into the Properties panel. Depth information can support compositing treatments such as depth of field or fog; colored shadows can help an inserted object sit more convincingly in a scene. Results still depend on the model, its materials and animation, and how the composition is lit.

Presets and performance
Adobe described 33 new animation presets in its detailed announcement. It also claimed that Windows interface performance could be up to four times faster; this refers to UI performance, not a promise that rendering or every project would be four times faster. Adobe initially offered a modernized interface in beta. See Adobe’s After Effects 3D announcement.
These additions make After Effects more capable for accessible 3D compositing, but do not turn it into a general replacement for Blender, Cinema 4D, Maya, or Houdini. Advanced modeling, UV work, complex rigging, simulation, specialized rendering, and large-scale asset management may still call for dedicated 3D software. GLB and GLTF files can also vary in materials, textures, rigs, and animation behavior, so asset compatibility needs to be checked in the actual project.

Substance 3D and Adobe Stock were separate parts of the announcement
Adobe described a “Send to After Effects” workflow from Substance 3D Painter and Substance 3D Sampler tools for creating seamless materials and image-based lighting. It cited a catalog of more than 20,000 licensed materials, models, and environment lights through Substance 3D Assets. That catalog figure is Adobe’s; it does not mean every Creative Cloud plan includes every Substance application or asset. Check the specific plan entitlement before building a pipeline around it. The integration is most relevant to motion designers, product visualization, VFX, and teams already handling 3D assets.
The wider news also included a second Firefly-related bonus payment for Adobe Stock contributors who allowed their content to be used to train Adobe’s AI systems. That was a particular contributor program, not evidence of a permanent royalty or universal payment policy. Payment eligibility and terms should be read in the applicable Adobe Stock contributor communications; the contemporaneous report is at Thurrott.

What happened after the 2024 announcement
Adobe’s April 2, 2025 Premiere Pro and After Effects 25.2 announcement brought several later capabilities into released versions and added separate features. Premiere Pro gained Firefly-powered Generative Extend, including extension of 4K clips, Media Intelligence for finding footage, automatic caption translation in more than 27 languages, drag-and-drop color management, dynamic waveforms, colored sequence labels, and additional GPU-accelerated formats. After Effects gained a high-performance preview engine, additional 3D motion-design tools, and HDR monitoring. See Adobe’s 25.2 announcement.
Generative Extend and Firefly video workflows should not be folded into the September 10 IBC announcement. Adobe discussed Firefly video at Adobe MAX on October 14, 2024, in a separate announcement covering beta video workflows and enhancements across Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Frame.io: Adobe MAX video announcement.

Who would have benefited most—and what to check
- Editors working with mixed raw or log footage: The new color-management approach could reduce setup work, but test it against the production’s LUTs, camera mix, monitoring, and delivery requirements.
- Teams moving between Premiere and After Effects: Color consistency and Dynamic Link improvements could help, but confirm behavior across the versions the team actually uses.
- Motion designers using animated 3D assets: GLB/GLTF import, embedded animation, shadows, and depth tools could reduce intermediate renders for supported assets.
- Legacy-project teams: Beta-to-stable changes, version mismatches, third-party plug-ins, and project rollback can complicate upgrades. Test copies of representative projects before changing a shared workflow.
- Editors with fixed Rec.709 footage or 2D-only After Effects work: The main announced changes may provide less practical value than they do for mixed-camera color work or 3D compositing.
- Teams considering an alternative: DaVinci Resolve is relevant when integrated color grading and finishing matter most; Blender or Cinema 4D suit deeper 3D work. Switching applications also carries training, project-conversion, plug-in, and collaboration costs.
For current plan names, pricing, and included applications, consult Adobe’s Creative Cloud plans page; terms and entitlements can change by time and region. The 2024 announcement alone does not establish what a subscriber receives today.
