Adobe’s April 15, 2024 announcement had two different kinds of news: Acrobat AI Assistant became generally available, while generative-video features for Premiere Pro were demonstrations of work in progress, not a full product launch. Acrobat’s assistant could summarize and answer questions about documents, with a temporary launch offer of $4.99 a month for the add-on. Premiere Pro’s preview showed possible ways to extend clips, alter objects and generate B-roll; Adobe said some of those capabilities were planned for later in 2024.
What Adobe actually launched
Adobe made Acrobat AI Assistant generally available across Acrobat and Reader workflows on desktop and the web. The assistant was designed to let users ask questions about a document, get a summary of a long file, and find relevant passages through citations and clickable links. It could also help turn document material into drafts such as emails, reports or presentation outlines.

The announcement was not limited to PDF files. Adobe described workflows involving Word documents, PowerPoint presentations and meeting transcripts brought into Acrobat. Suggested questions could help users start exploring a document, while citations and links were intended to make it easier to check where an answer came from. These are aids to review, not a guarantee that the answer or interpretation is correct.
For example, a user might ask a contract to identify a deadline or request the main conclusions from a lengthy report, then open the cited passage to verify the result. That is useful for retrieval and first-pass summarization; it is not a substitute for legal, tax, financial or other professional judgment.

Where it worked, and what it cost at launch
At launch, the assistant was available through Acrobat and Reader on desktop and the web, with access also described through Chrome and Microsoft Edge extensions. Acrobat Reader mobile had a beta experience, offered free for a limited time. Adobe specified English-language availability for desktop and web at launch; that should not be read as a claim that every language or platform had identical support.
The underlying Reader or Acrobat application was not the same thing as access to the complete AI Assistant feature set: Adobe offered the assistant as a separate paid add-on. Its early-access price started at US$4.99 per month, and that promotional offer ended June 5, 2024. This is a historical launch price, not a current 2026 price. Check Adobe’s Acrobat pricing page for current plan and add-on details before deciding what it would cost now.

For occasional reading of short files, or for someone unwilling to add a subscription, the case is weaker. Organizations should also confirm that their plan, language, file types and usage limits match the work they need to do.
Accuracy and privacy need their own checks
Adobe presented citations, document navigation and analysis of PDF structure as ways to make responses easier to verify. They do not make errors impossible. A fluent answer can misread a passage; a relevant citation can still fail to support the assistant’s conclusion. Scanned pages, OCR errors, handwriting, dense tables, footnotes and multi-column layouts are all reasons to inspect the source carefully. Word and PowerPoint documents may also behave differently from native PDFs.

- Built for video editors: Premiere Pro's most-used commands come pre-mapped one per key, named and color-coded so you can scan quickly while you cut.
- Remap anything in KeyStudio, the browser-based remapping tool we built for Dash keyboard. Nothing to install, and the layout saves onto the keyboard so it works the same on every machine you use.
- 20 spare shortcut keycaps in the box: move the keys to match the way you actually cut and grade, rather than learning someone else's layout.
- The compact, low-profile design frees desk space and keeps your mouse within reach for better posture. Winner of the Red Dot Product Design Award in 2025 and designed in Vancouver, Canada. We've been building tools for creative work since 2009, and every Dash comes a 12 month warranty.
- Tri-mode connection across Mac, PC, iOS, iPadOS, Android and Linux: Bluetooth for three devices, 2.4GHz wireless or USB-C wired, on a 3500mAh battery good for 450 hours.
Adobe said third-party large language models would not be allowed to train on Adobe customer data, and that customer document content would not be stored or used to train AI Assistants without consent. That is a statement about training and data use, not proof that documents are never processed or retained. Before using the service with confidential material, organizations should check applicable Adobe terms, data-processing documentation, administrative controls, and contractual and data-residency requirements.
Premiere Pro: a generative-AI preview, not a complete launch
In the same announcement, Adobe previewed generative features it was developing for Premiere Pro. The distinction matters: on April 15, 2024, Adobe did not make this entire set of generative-video tools generally available to every Premiere Pro user. The company described them as demonstrations and a roadmap for later in the year.
Generative Extend
Generative Extend was presented as a way to create extra frames at the start or end of a clip. The practical target was a small editing problem: hold a shot for another beat, cover a transition or adjust timing without finding another piece of footage. It was not simply a promise to generate an entirely new scene.
Object Addition and Object Removal
Adobe demonstrated workflows for selecting and tracking objects so an editor could remove or replace something in a shot, or add an element. Examples included removing a boom microphone or coffee cup, changing clothing, and adding set dressing. These were previewed capabilities, not evidence that every shot could be altered cleanly or that the tools were ready for all production work.

- BUILT FOR PREMIERE PRO: 150+ Premiere Pro shortcuts are printed on the keys and color-coded by function, so cut, trim, timeline and playback commands are visible at a glance. Edit faster without memorizing hotkeys.
- MADE FOR MAC: macOS US layout with Command, Option and Control keys. Connects to any Mac with a USB-C port, including MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, Mac mini and Mac Studio. Plug and play.
- A REAL KEYBOARD, NOT A CONTROL PANEL: Each key shows the Adobe Premiere Pro shortcut icon and label plus the standard letter, so you can type normally and use the printed shortcuts in the same session. No software, drivers or setup needed.
- BACKLIT ALUMINUM BUILD: Solid aluminum frame with backlit keys for late-night sessions and dim studios. USB-C wired for a stable, lag-free connection with no batteries to charge or Bluetooth pairing.
- WHO IT IS FOR: Video editors, YouTubers, content creators, filmmakers and film students working in Adobe Premiere Pro on Mac. Please check the compatibility image before ordering.
Generative B-roll and text-to-video
Adobe also showed the idea of creating video from text prompts within Premiere Pro. Potential uses included a placeholder while planning an edit, an imaginative shot that would be difficult to film, or B-roll that is hard to source. The announcement did not promise consistently usable, final, broadcast-ready footage. Generated video can include artifacts, incorrect physics, inconsistent details or unusable text.
Adobe’s model strategy: Firefly plus early outside explorations
Adobe said it was developing its own Firefly Video Model while also exploring integrations with other providers. The company named OpenAI, Runway and Pika in the context of early explorations and possible future workflows. That was not the same as announcing finalized, generally available integrations with all three.
Recommended Free Tools
The strategy signaled that Adobe wanted generative tools inside the editing workflow and argued that different models may suit different tasks. That could give editors more choice, but it also means results, rights, licensing, latency and terms may vary by model. The April preview alone did not settle those questions.

Adobe separately said its AI-powered audio workflows were generally available. The announced workflow included fade handles, clip badges, dynamic waveforms and AI-based category tagging, along with controls intended to make audio editing faster. These audio features had a different status from the generative-video demonstrations: they were described as available, while the video tools were previewed.

What happened next: Generative Extend arrived later
On October 14, 2024, Adobe announced Generative Extend in Premiere Pro, using its Firefly Video Model. Adobe also said Content Credentials could be included on export after using the feature. That later release shows that at least one of the April previews moved into the product; it does not establish that Object Addition, Object Removal or every text-to-video concept shipped at the same time or with the same behavior. See Adobe’s October 2024 Generative Extend announcement for that later status.
What the announcement meant for working editors
For Acrobat users, the immediate question was whether document search, summaries and drafting justified a paid add-on, given the need to verify outputs and assess data policies. For Premiere Pro editors, the April announcement was primarily a signal about Adobe’s direction: AI assistance would be embedded in familiar tools, with small timeline fixes as well as more ambitious generated imagery in view.

Generative frames or object edits may change details across time, struggle with fast movement, occlusion, reflections, hair, smoke or water, and produce results that are plausible but not faithful. In documentary, news or other factual work, altering pixels can change meaning. Editors should follow client, union, rights and disclosure requirements, and treat provenance tools such as Content Credentials as part of the workflow rather than assuming they answer every disclosure question.
Acrobat was the product available at the center of Adobe’s April 2024 announcement; Premiere Pro’s generative-video work was the preview. The distinction helps set realistic expectations: use citations to check document answers, verify current subscription terms, and do not plan a production around a demonstrated video capability until its shipping status and terms are confirmed.
