At its main Adobe MAX event on October 28, 2025, Adobe announced Firefly Image Model 5, AI assistants, new Photoshop tools, and automation features for photography, video, audio, and large-scale content production. The announcements were not all ready for everyone to use: some features were generally available, others were public beta, and several major tools were limited to private beta or a waitlist.

What Adobe MAX 2025 announced

The October 28 event centered on a strategic shift: Adobe wants AI to work as a conversational and production layer inside Creative Cloud, rather than as a separate image generator. That means more model choices, assistants that can help carry out multi-step work, and tools designed to edit or process content at scale.

The main announcements touched Firefly, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Lightroom, and Express. The practical distinction is availability. Photoshop’s Generative Fill with partner models, Generative Upscale, and Harmonize were generally available at launch. Premiere’s new masking tools, Lightroom AI Assisted Culling, Firefly Image Model 5, Generate Speech, and Generate Soundtrack were public beta. Photoshop AI Assistant, Firefly Custom Models, Firefly Creative Production, and the Firefly video editor were private beta or waitlist offerings.

This article covers the main MAX event in Los Angeles. Adobe also held MAX London on April 24, 2025, with separate announcements, including Firefly Image Model 4; those earlier updates should not be confused with the October event.

Firefly Image Model 5 and Prompt to Edit

Availability at launch: Public beta. Firefly Image Model 5 is Adobe’s image-generation model, accessible as one option within the Firefly platform rather than a separate application. Adobe said it supports native 4-megapixel output and photorealistic generation. Firefly’s Prompt to Edit lets a user describe changes to an existing image, shifting the workflow from generating a fresh image to revising one with natural-language instructions.

Firefly also expanded its model selection with third-party providers, including Black Forest Labs, Google, and OpenAI. Adobe announced a wider partner ecosystem spanning image, video, audio, and enhancement, with Runway, Luma AI, ElevenLabs, and Topaz Labs among the named partners. That choice may reduce the need to move between services, but it does not mean every model has identical terms, moderation, credit use, controls, or rights assurances.

Adobe describes its own Firefly models as designed to be commercially safe. Treat that as Adobe’s claim about the relevant Adobe models, not a blanket guarantee for every third-party model available through its products. Check the terms for the specific model and plan before using generated work commercially. Public beta also means features and behavior can change; availability does not guarantee production-ready reliability or unlimited use.

Photoshop: useful tools now, assistant later

Generative Fill with partner models — available at launch. Photoshop users can choose from partner models in the familiar Generative Fill workflow. This is primarily a model-choice improvement: it brings additional generation options into Photoshop without changing the fact that users still need to inspect and refine the result.

  • Create anything you dream up with AI-powered apps for photography, design, video, social media, and more — plus free creative essentials like fonts and Adobe Stock — all in one plan.
  • You get 20+ industry-leading apps including Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, and Acrobat Pro, plus Adobe Firefly creative AI.
  • Unlimited access to standard AI image and vector features, and 4,000 monthly generative credits for premium AI video and audio features.
  • Create gorgeous images, rich graphics, and incredible art with Photoshop.
  • Create beautiful designs, icons, and more with Illustrator.

Generative Upscale — available at launch. This AI-assisted tool enlarges images. It can help when a source needs more resolution, but it cannot recover genuine detail that was never captured; inspect fine textures, edges, and faces before relying on an enlarged result.

Harmonize — available at launch. Harmonize is intended to help integrate a subject into a replacement background by aligning visual qualities such as lighting, color, and tone. It can speed up compositing, but a convincing composite may still need manual work on shadows, edges, reflections, and perspective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Photoshop AI Assistant — private beta and waitlist. Adobe previewed a conversational assistant for describing edits and working through tasks. It was not a generally available Photoshop feature at MAX. An assistant that interprets instructions is not the same as unrestricted automation: access, supported actions, and the degree to which it can execute edits depend on the beta experience.

Premiere Pro: AI masking moves into beta

Availability at launch: Public beta. Premiere Pro’s AI Object Mask is designed to identify and isolate a person or object in video, with the aim of reducing some manual masking and rotoscoping. Adobe also announced rectangle, ellipse, and pen masking, plus Fast Vector Mask.

These are editing aids, not a guarantee of a clean mask throughout a clip. Fast movement, motion blur, similar subject and background colors, occlusion, overlapping people, and objects that leave and re-enter the frame can all produce errors or drift. Fine hair, smoke, reflections, and transparent materials are especially demanding. Review masks across the full shot, correct them where necessary, and keep manual tools available for failures. The MAX announcement does not establish that the feature tracks every subject flawlessly or works the same on all hardware. Adobe listed these tools as beta; it did not establish that their use consumes generative credits.

Lightroom: AI Assisted Culling for large shoots

Availability at launch: Public beta. AI Assisted Culling is aimed at photographers sorting large sets of images. It offers an assistive way to find likely selects, but should not be treated as an objective judge of which frames matter. A technically sharp, conventionally exposed image is not necessarily the best documentary moment, and a deliberate blur or unusual expression may be exactly what a photographer wants.

For weddings, events, and burst sequences, use the tool as a first pass and review its suggestions before rejecting or delivering files. The launch information does not specify enough detail to promise which qualities it evaluates, whether it automatically rejects images, or whether the feature is available across Lightroom desktop, Classic, mobile, and web. Photographers handling sensitive client work should also confirm how the beta processes images and consider their privacy obligations.

Firefly Boards: ideation and visual exploration

Firefly Boards is Adobe’s collaborative space for collecting and exploring visual directions. MAX additions included Rotate Object to change an object’s apparent pose or perspective, visual-style presets, Generative Text Edit, PDF export, and bulk image downloading.

Boards is best understood as an ideation and moodboarding surface, not automatically a final-production system. Before building a production workflow around it, check the export formats, collaboration and comment capabilities, asset organization, model and credit requirements, and whether downloaded assets retain the metadata or Content Credentials your team needs. Adobe announced the features, but not every operational detail needed to treat Boards as a replacement for a fully managed production library.

Custom models and production-scale editing

Firefly Custom Models — private beta. Adobe’s proposed tool lets creators personalize generation with reference material such as images, illustrations, and sketches. Potential uses include more consistent brand visuals, product imagery, characters, or campaign work. It is not a general feature available to every subscriber at launch.

Use only material you have the right to use. That includes considering client ownership, confidentiality, personal data, and permissions—not just whether an image can technically be uploaded. The MAX announcement does not establish all details of model ownership, storage, deletion, sharing, or organization-level access, so teams should verify those terms before using sensitive or client-owned material.

Firefly Creative Production — private beta. This no-code batch-editing concept is aimed at applying changes such as background replacement, color grading, and cropping across large image sets, potentially thousands of images. It could be significant for e-commerce catalogs, campaign localization, social resizing, and other repetitive production work. But at MAX it was a private beta, not a generally available tool. Teams considering it should evaluate human review, approvals, reversibility, source-file and metadata preservation, and access controls before trusting batch output in a live pipeline.

Audio and video in Firefly

Generate Speech — public beta. Adobe announced text-to-speech using voices from its Firefly Speech Model and ElevenLabs. The announcement named those sources, but should not be read as proof that every voice is a cloned voice, that every language is supported, or that all generated speech has identical commercial terms. Check the voice, language, usage rights, and credit cost for the specific option.

Generate Soundtrack — public beta. This brings soundtrack generation into Firefly. Generated music still needs review for fit, editability, and the terms attached to its use; the existence of a tool does not establish that every result suits broadcast or other tightly controlled production.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Firefly video editor — private beta. Adobe previewed a video editor within Firefly alongside video-generation and editing capabilities. At launch it was not a finished Premiere replacement. The announcement does not establish a full nonlinear editing feature set or a seamless project handoff to Premiere Pro, so editors should treat it as an early offering rather than assume it fits an established post-production pipeline.

Express and the wider Creative Cloud

Adobe Express is positioned for quick social, marketing, and branded content: templates, resizing, and browser or mobile creation make it more accessible than a full desktop production app. Adobe’s investor materials listed Express AI Assistant as public beta. Access may depend on account, region, plan, and rollout. Adobe also described assistants across Photoshop, Express, Firefly, and Acrobat, but the degree to which each assistant recommends actions or executes them varies; “assistant” does not mean universal autonomous control.

Express is not a replacement for Photoshop’s deep image editing, Illustrator’s detailed vector work, or Premiere’s professional video workflow. The broader MAX announcement discussed improvements across Creative Cloud, but the headline changes were concentrated in the apps and tools above; a long list of minor updates would obscure the more consequential availability distinctions.

What was available, and what was still in beta?

Announcement Status at MAX 2025
Photoshop Generative Fill with partner models, Generative Upscale, Harmonize Generally available
Firefly Image Model 5; Premiere AI Object Mask and masking tools; Lightroom AI Assisted Culling Public beta
Generate Speech and Generate Soundtrack Public beta
Express AI Assistant Public beta per Adobe investor materials
Photoshop AI Assistant Private beta / waitlist
Firefly Custom Models and Creative Production Private beta
Firefly video editor Private beta

Beta status can mean changing features, limited account or regional access, and less predictable behavior than a finished release. Check the current app and account availability rather than assuming that an announcement means a feature is installed or included in every plan.

Plans, pricing, and generative credits

Adobe’s US plan pages showed these price signals in the August 2026 research snapshot: Creative Cloud Pro at US$69.99 per month regular price; Firefly Standard at US$9.99 per month with 2,000 monthly credits; Firefly Pro at US$19.99 with 4,000 credits; Firefly Pro Plus at US$49.99 regular price; and Firefly Premium at US$199.99 regular price. Express Premium was US$9.99 per month. Single-app Photoshop and Premiere plans were shown at US$22.99 per month on annual, billed-monthly terms, while the Photography plan was US$19.99 per month on that basis.

These are US price signals, not universal quotes. Region, taxes, billing commitment, promotions, renewal status, and eligibility can change the amount. Confirm the current checkout page and plan terms before subscribing. Adobe’s generative-credit documentation distinguishes standard from premium features: paid plans can include unlimited access to some standard generations, while premium generations draw from monthly credits. Allocations differ by plan; the published examples include 2,000 for Firefly Standard, 4,000 for Pro, 10,000 for Pro Plus, and 50,000 for Premium. Do not assume that a Creative Cloud subscription gives unlimited access to every model or premium generation.

The MAX promotion that offered unlimited generations on selected plans ran only from October 28 through December 1, 2025. It is not a current entitlement.

For a full suite of desktop apps, Creative Cloud Pro is the relevant plan to compare. Firefly Pro suits AI-focused creators who do not need the entire desktop suite; the Photography plan is aimed at photo workflows; Express Premium fits quick branded content. If you need only one desktop app, compare its single-app plan rather than paying for tools you will not use.

Who should care most?

  • Existing Creative Cloud users: The clearest benefit is having more AI options and assistance inside familiar applications. Check beta access, credits, internet requirements, and plan eligibility before counting on a new workflow.
  • Photographers: Culling and upscale tools may help with volume and delivery, but human selection and client-privacy judgment remain essential.
  • Video editors: Object masking and Firefly audio/video tools are worth watching, but beta performance and rights, continuity, and finishing requirements matter.
  • Designers and illustrators: Model choice and custom-model concepts may help exploration and consistency. Typography, editability, and rights can matter more than image-generation novelty.
  • Marketing and production teams: Batch editing and custom models could have operational value, but governance, approvals, auditability, and predictable costs should be part of any adoption decision.

Adobe’s advantage is the integration of AI and editing tools with established applications and cross-app workflows. The trade-offs are subscription dependence, credit complexity, cloud and account requirements, uneven beta access, and distinct terms for Adobe and third-party models. Depending on the work, Canva may suit template-led content; Affinity may appeal to users seeking desktop tools without the same subscription model; DaVinci Resolve is a video, color, and audio alternative; Capture One focuses on photography; Figma targets interface and product design; and Runway is an AI-first video option. None is a direct substitute for the whole Creative Cloud ecosystem.
