Adobe Photoshop’s 2026 updates make AI-assisted image editing more controllable, but they do not turn Photoshop into an autonomous editor. The January update that inspired the original “whole new level” headline improved Generative Fill, Generative Expand, reference-image compositing, and output resolution. Since then, Photoshop has added model selection, an on-device Remove-tool model, Firefly Boards integration, and better conversational editing.

As of August 18, 2026, the latest listed desktop release is Photoshop 27.9.1, released in July. The biggest practical gains are workflow improvements and greater control over generated content—not proof that every image now becomes photorealistic automatically.

The headline originally referred mainly to Adobe’s January 27, 2026 Photoshop innovations. Adobe described the release as improving realism, precision, and control in AI-assisted editing. Adobe’s announcement and T3’s January coverage highlighted several distinct improvements:

- Improved Generative Expand for extending an image beyond its original boundaries.
- Higher-resolution generated content, reported in the January coverage as output of up to 2K in the relevant workflow.
- Better handling of lighting, depth, and compositing.
- A more capable Reference Image workflow intended to give generated results stronger guidance about an object’s identity, geometry, scale, rotation, color, and perspective.
- New Clarity, Dehaze, and Grain adjustment layers.
- Dynamic Text, which can fit type to circular or arched shapes.
Not all of these are AI image-manipulation features. Generative Fill, Generative Expand, and reference-image compositing directly affect generated pixels. Adjustment layers and Dynamic Text are useful conventional Photoshop improvements, but they should not be treated as evidence that image-generation quality has improved.
What is newest now? The 2026 Photoshop timeline
The January release is no longer the complete picture. Adobe’s desktop update history shows the following progression:

The AI tools that matter most
Generative Fill
Generative Fill works within a selection and uses a natural-language prompt to add, replace, or remove content. It is useful for changing a prop or item of clothing, replacing part of a product photograph, extending a painted or photographic scene, and exploring compositing ideas while keeping the result in an editable Photoshop document.
For dependable results, make a precise selection, write a specific prompt, generate several variations, and preserve the original layer. Adobe’s generative-AI overview describes the current family of Photoshop tools.
Generative Expand
Generative Expand increases the canvas beyond the original image and fills the new area with content intended to match the existing scene. It is especially useful when a photograph is too tightly framed or must be adapted to a different aspect ratio for social media, advertising, or a presentation.

It can continue a sky, wall, landscape, or relatively simple background convincingly. It is less predictable with architecture, readable lettering, people, repeated patterns, and complex horizons.

Reference images provide additional visual guidance. In the 2026 workflows, they are intended to help maintain an object’s distinctive appearance while controlling aspects such as scale, rotation, perspective, color, and geometry.
“Geometry-aware” describes the intended behavior, not a guarantee of exact preservation. A reference can improve consistency without retaining every edge, proportion, logo, facial feature, or material detail. Compare results with and without the reference, particularly when editing a recognizable person, product, artwork, or character.
Harmonize
Harmonize adjusts the lighting, colors, shadows, and details of an inserted subject or object so it fits its background more naturally. It is a compositing aid, not a guarantee of photorealism. It cannot reliably correct a fundamentally wrong camera angle, focal length, scale, or perspective.
Generative Upscale
Generative Upscale attempts to improve apparent clarity and sharpness when increasing image size. Adobe documents the feature as Firefly-powered, while the newer release notes also identify Topaz Labs as a provider for the updated upscaling workflow.

Upscaling can produce a more convincing large image, but it cannot reliably recover information that the camera never captured. Inspect faces, fingers, fine hair, product labels, text, and edges at 100% magnification before using the result commercially.

Remove Tool and Find Distractions
The Remove tool detects and replaces unwanted objects or distractions. In the July update, more controls moved into the Contextual Task Bar, including Find Distractions, Add to, Subtract from, and the option to remove after each stroke.
The on-device generative model added in version 27.7 is significant for users concerned about cloud processing or network reliability. That qualification applies to the Remove-tool model; it does not mean that all of Photoshop’s generative features work offline.
AI Assistant and AI Markup
Photoshop’s AI Assistant lets users describe edits such as removing distractions, changing a background, adjusting lighting, or changing colors. Adobe also says users can request edits by voice in the Photoshop app. Photoshop on the web includes AI Markup, a public beta that lets users draw over an area and describe the desired change.

AI Assistant has been described by Adobe as a public beta, not as a mature replacement for Photoshop’s conventional tools. The user still needs to review the proposed edit, correct errors, and decide whether the result is suitable for the intended use.
Model choice is useful—but not automatically better
Some Photoshop generative workflows now expose a model picker through the Contextual Task Bar. Adobe’s 2026 documentation and release notes identify Adobe Firefly and partner models such as Gemini and Flux. Adobe has also said that the broader Firefly ecosystem supports more than 25 models, including models from Adobe, Google, OpenAI, Runway, and Black Forest Labs.
That ecosystem-wide figure does not mean every model is available in every Photoshop tool, platform, account, or plan. Availability can differ between Generative Fill, Generate Image, Firefly, the web, mobile, and desktop.

Choose a model by task rather than by headline reputation. Compare:

- Photorealism and material rendering.
- Handling of faces, hands, text, and small objects.
- Consistency with reference images.
- Speed and availability.
- Commercial-use terms and the model’s applicable policy.
More models create more options, but also more variation and a less predictable workflow. Keep the source image and generated alternatives so that you can return to an earlier result.
Is the output genuinely better?
Adobe’s claims of improved realism, precision, and control are plausible descriptions of the feature direction, but the supplied sources do not establish a controlled independent benchmark proving that Photoshop 27.9.1 is categorically better for every image type.
A meaningful evaluation should test concrete jobs:
- Replacing a small foreground object.
- Removing a person from a busy background.
- Extending an image into a new aspect ratio.
- Adding an object from a reference image.
- Matching an inserted object’s light and shadows.
- Preserving facial identity.
- Rendering readable text and logos.
- Maintaining hair, fingers, reflections, fine edges, and repeated patterns.
- Upscaling a low-resolution photograph.
The reasonable conclusion is that Photoshop is becoming more capable and flexible, especially for exploratory compositing. Results still depend heavily on the selection, prompt, source image, model, and human cleanup. “Whole new level” is headline language—not a measured universal result.

1. Remove an unwanted object
- Open a photograph containing a clearly separated unwanted object.
- Choose the Remove Tool.
- Use Find Distractions if it appears in the Contextual Task Bar.
- Compare a single stroke with Add to and Subtract from adjustments.
- Test the Remove after each stroke setting.
- Where offered, compare the on-device model with the available online workflow.
- Inspect edges, shadows, reflections, repeating textures, and nearby faces.
Record whether the result still needs cloning, healing, masking, or manual repainting.
2. Replace an object with Generative Fill
- Make a selection around the area to be changed.
- Choose Generative Fill from the Contextual Task Bar.
- Use a specific prompt instead of relying on a blank request.
- Generate multiple variations.
- Repeat with available models.
- Compare perspective, lighting, texture, prompt adherence, and edge quality.
- Keep the original document or layer so the edit remains reversible.
3. Test a reference image
- Select the subject or object to integrate.
- Add one or more reference images where the workflow supports them.
- Compare results with and without the reference.
- Check scale, rotation, perspective, color, shape, and distinctive identity.
A reference image is an additional constraint, not a promise of exact duplication.

4. Change the aspect ratio
- Duplicate the document.
- Expand the canvas to the desired dimensions.
- Use Generative Expand.
- Compare a blank prompt with a descriptive prompt.
- Inspect horizons, architecture, foliage, people, text, and repeating patterns.
What still requires manual Photoshop work
AI generation is fastest when plausibility is enough. Precision production still requires conventional editing. Expect to use masks, selections, clone and healing tools, adjustment layers, perspective corrections, and color grading for:
- Fine hair, fur, smoke, glass, and transparent materials.
- Faces and identity-sensitive edits.
- Hands and fingers.
- Reflections and contact shadows.
- Jewelry and small product details.
- Packaging, logos, labels, and readable text.
- Architecture and repeated patterns such as brick, fabric, foliage, and crowds.
- Documentary, historical, or otherwise accuracy-sensitive images.
Generated text and logos should not be treated as final branding or packaging artwork. AI can also invent plausible details, so retain the original asset and inspect the entire image rather than only the edited area.
Desktop, web, mobile, and cloud availability
Photoshop users should not assume that every platform exposes the same tools:

Firefly Image 3 should not be expected in current Generative Fill or Generative Expand workflows: Adobe community announcements described its phased retirement, with full removal planned for August 2026. Check the current interface rather than following older tutorials.
Credits, plans, and the subscription decision
Adobe distinguishes standard and premium generative features. Generative credits are visible in the Adobe Account or product interface; they reset monthly and do not roll over. A feature appearing in Photoshop does not necessarily mean it is unlimited or included without a credit requirement. See Adobe’s credit guidance and generative-credit FAQ.
As checked in the August 16–18, 2026 research window, Adobe’s US pricing page displayed:
- Single-app Photoshop: US$22.99 per month on an annual contract billed monthly, with 25 monthly generative credits.
- Creative Cloud Pro: US$69.99 per month on an annual contract billed monthly at the regular displayed price, including Photoshop, more than 20 applications, unlimited standard generative features, 4,000 monthly credits for premium features, partner-model access, Firefly Boards, Adobe Express Premium, and 100GB of storage.
- Promotion: the page displayed a limited-time Creative Cloud Pro offer of US$34.99 per month for the first three months, then US$69.99. Promotions and eligibility can change.
Recheck Adobe’s current pricing page before subscribing. For photographers who need Photoshop and Lightroom but not the full application bundle, compare the Photography plan. Exact regional prices, credits, eligibility, and entitlements depend on the checkout page.
Which alternative makes sense?
- Adobe Creative Cloud Pro: best for existing Adobe users, professional designers, agencies, photographers, and anyone who needs Photoshop alongside other Creative Cloud applications.
- Adobe Photography plan: worth comparing if Photoshop and Lightroom are the main requirements.
- Adobe Firefly: suited to prompt-led image creation and experimentation without the full Photoshop application bundle. See Adobe’s Firefly page for current plans.
- Canva: a simpler choice for social graphics, templates, marketing content, and basic image editing. Its pricing and AI entitlements vary by region.
- Affinity Photo: relevant for users seeking professional raster editing outside Adobe’s subscription ecosystem; see the official site for current licensing.
- GIMP: a free, open-source option for conventional raster editing, but not a direct equivalent to Photoshop’s integrated generative-AI tools. See gimp.org.
- Photopea: a browser-based editor useful for occasional PSD-compatible work, though less suited to heavy professional workflows. See Photopea.
Verdict
If you already use Photoshop, the 2026 upgrades are valuable because AI is becoming more integrated, more adjustable, and more useful for everyday compositing. Reference images, model selection, improved removal, Harmonize, and Generative Expand can shorten the path from rough idea to workable image.
They do not eliminate conventional editing, guarantee photorealism, make every feature available on every platform, or provide unlimited AI usage on every plan. Upgrade for a faster and broader Photoshop workflow—not because the software can now replace artistic judgment, masking, retouching, or final quality control.
