Verdict: Adobe Photoshop remains the most capable all-purpose image editor for Mac users who need precise selections, layers, masks, compositing, typography, retouching and broad file compatibility. Its recent AI tools save time, and Apple Silicon support makes the desktop app a strong choice for serious creative work. The drawbacks are unchanged: Photoshop is complex, subscription-only and excessive for basic photo corrections.

For photographers, the Photography plan is often the best-value route because it costs less than standalone Photoshop on Adobe’s current U.S. annual-billed-monthly pricing and includes Lightroom, 1TB of storage and more generative credits.

Adobe’s release notes list Photoshop 2025 LTS version 26.11.6, but that should not automatically be treated as the newest general desktop release. Photoshop has separate release channels, so check Adobe’s current desktop release notes when installing or choosing an LTS version.
Why Photoshop remains the professional benchmark
Photoshop’s advantage is not that it is the simplest editor. It is that almost every part of a difficult image-editing job can be controlled, revised and combined with another technique.
A typical document can contain raw pixels, vector shapes, text, adjustment layers, smart objects, masks and dozens of blend modes without forcing the user into a destructive workflow. That matters when an image must be revised for a client, resized for multiple formats or repurposed for print, web and social media.
- Layers and groups: Build composites and illustrations without flattening the source material.
- Masks and selections: Isolate subjects, refine edges and restrict edits to precise areas.
- Adjustment layers: Change curves, levels, color balance and other properties without permanently altering the original pixels.
- Smart Objects: Transform, filter and reuse source content while retaining editability.
- Retouching: Clone Stamp, Healing Brush, Remove Tool and content-aware techniques cover everything from blemishes to distracting background objects.
- Design tools: Typography, shapes, brushes, paths, perspective, warp, liquify and transformation tools make Photoshop useful beyond photography.
- Automation: Actions, batch processing, scripts and plugins can reduce repetitive production work.
- File support: PSD and PSB preserve Photoshop documents, while formats such as JPEG, PNG, TIFF and WebP support common delivery workflows. Check Adobe’s current supported-format list for specialist formats.
Photoshop also handles RAW files through Adobe Camera Raw, but it is not primarily a photo catalog. For large libraries, keywording, collection management and batch-first workflows, Lightroom Classic or another dedicated digital asset manager is usually a better foundation. Photoshop is where the detailed pixel work begins after the best images have been selected and developed.
What is new and useful in the current Mac version?
Adobe’s recent updates concentrate on two areas: AI-assisted production and more flexible nondestructive editing. The improvements are meaningful, but they do not remove the need for judgment or manual cleanup.
Remove Tool improvements and local processing
The Remove Tool can eliminate people, wires, signs, blemishes and other distractions. Adobe’s recent desktop release notes describe an on-device AI model, with controls to download, cancel or remove the local model and switch between on-device and cloud processing. Photoshop checks hardware compatibility before downloading the model.

Generative Fill and Generative Expand
Generative Fill can add, replace or remove selected areas using a text prompt. Generative Expand extends the canvas beyond the original photograph and fills the new space. These tools are particularly effective for practical production tasks such as:
- Widening a portrait crop for a banner.
- Removing a distracting object from a travel photograph.
- Extending a background to fit a different aspect ratio.
- Creating variations for a concept image or layout.
The results are not guaranteed to be accurate. Generated detail can fail around hair, hands, text, reflections, transparent objects, repeated architecture and brand marks. A plausible result can still be factually wrong. Treat generated pixels as a starting point, then inspect them at 100 percent and correct them with masks, cloning, healing or manual painting.
Harmonize
Harmonize is aimed at compositing. It helps match the lighting, color, shadows and visual character of a person or object to a new background. That can shorten the first pass when building an illustration or advertising composite, although a convincing final image may still require manual edge work, painted shadows, color grading and perspective correction.
Generative Upscale and partner models
Photoshop’s current feature material highlights Generative Upscale, Topaz Labs partner models and access to models associated with Adobe Firefly, Flux and Gemini. Availability can depend on the plan, region, account, rollout stage and whether a model is marked as beta. Partner-model availability and interface details can change.
New nondestructive adjustment options
Adobe has added Clarity & Dehaze and Grain as adjustment layers. This is a small but useful workflow improvement: the effect can be revised later, masked to specific areas and combined with other adjustments instead of being baked permanently into the image.
Photoshop in real creative workflows
Portrait retouching
A controlled portrait workflow might begin with Camera Raw for exposure and color, followed by separate layers for skin cleanup, local contrast, eye adjustments and tonal shaping. The Healing Brush and Clone Stamp remain valuable because they let the editor decide exactly what information is copied. The Remove Tool is faster for many distractions, but its output should be checked around hair, eyelashes, jewelry and fabric.
Removing an unwanted object
- Duplicate or protect the original layer.
- Select the Remove Tool and choose the appropriate processing mode when available.
- Paint over the object, including its shadow if the surrounding texture requires it.
- Inspect the result at full size.
- Repair repeating textures, edges or shadows manually with healing, cloning or a masked replacement.
This is an approachable first Photoshop task, but it also illustrates the application’s philosophy: automation creates a result quickly; layers and masks provide the control needed to finish it properly.

Replacing or extending a background
Select Subject and background-removal tools can create a starting mask around a person, product or object. Refine the mask around hair, fur, translucent material and fine edges, then use Generative Expand or a manually built background to fit the new composition. Harmonize may improve the initial match, but color temperature, shadow direction, depth of field and perspective still need human review.
Building a layered composite
An advanced composite might use a background layer, several masked subjects, smart objects for reusable source elements, adjustment layers for color matching, painted shadows and a final grading stack. Photoshop is unusually strong here because each decision can remain editable and because the PSD or PSB file can be passed to other Adobe users with its structure intact.
Preparing an image for print or web
Photoshop provides control over dimensions, resolution, color settings, sharpening, transparency and export formats. A print workflow may require careful document color management and a format such as TIFF, while web delivery usually calls for appropriately sized JPEG, PNG or WebP files. The correct settings depend on the printer, publication or delivery platform; Photoshop does not eliminate the need to follow those specifications.
Mac performance and compatibility
Photoshop is available as a native macOS application for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs according to current published compatibility summaries. Adobe’s requirements can change with major releases, so confirm the exact macOS version, processor architecture, RAM and free storage before upgrading.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Current published specification summaries list 8GB of RAM as a minimum, 16GB as recommended, at least 10GB of available storage and a minimum Mac display resolution of 1024×768. These figures should be checked against Adobe’s official system-requirements page at installation time. For serious painting, photography or large layered documents, 16GB or more is the more sensible target.
Performance depends heavily on the job:
- A small JPEG edit is much less demanding than a large multilayer PSD or PSB.
- Large canvases, many smart objects, high-resolution displays and numerous history states consume more memory.
- A nearly full internal drive can limit scratch-disk performance.
- Fast external storage is useful for libraries, working files and backups, but it does not replace adequate memory.
- Third-party plugins may not be compatible immediately after a major Photoshop or macOS release.
- Cloud AI generation depends on connectivity and account access; on-device tools depend on compatible hardware and the downloaded local model.
Macworld reported fluid performance on an M2 MacBook Air, including during use with a macOS Tahoe developer beta, and reported no major lag or bugs in that review period. That is an attributed result on specific hardware, not a guarantee for every Mac, document size, plugin or operating-system release.
AI quality: where Photoshop helps and where it does not
Photoshop’s AI is most valuable when the desired outcome is clear and the editor can judge the result quickly. Removing a wire, expanding a crop or generating several background ideas can save substantial time compared with building every pixel manually.

AI is less dependable when accuracy matters more than plausibility. Be especially cautious with:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Faces, hands, fingers and identity-sensitive edits.
- Hair, fur, eyeglasses and semi-transparent objects.
- Text, logos, product labels and branded details.
- Reflections, shadows and glass.
- Fences, brickwork, tiles and other repeating patterns.
- Large panoramas and high-resolution final output.
For documentary, news, scientific, product or commercial work, generated content can introduce details that were not present in the source. Photoshop’s tools are powerful editing aids, not a substitute for disclosure policies, fact-checking or professional retouching judgment.
Generative credits and plan limits
“AI included” does not mean every operation is unlimited. Adobe’s current U.S. plan comparison lists the following Photoshop-related allocations:
| Plan | Current credit signal | Relevant distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone Photoshop | 25 monthly generative credits | Photoshop desktop, web and mobile with 100GB storage |
| Photography | 4,000 monthly generative credits | Photoshop plus Lightroom and 1TB storage |
| Creative Cloud Pro | Adobe’s comparison table lists 1,000 monthly generative credits | Adobe separately describes unlimited standard creative AI image and vector features plus 4,000 credits for premium video and audio features |
Adobe presents different credit categories across its Photoshop, Creative Cloud and Firefly pages. Credit quantities, the operations that consume them and the boundary between standard and premium features can change. Check the exact plan and feature at checkout rather than treating one number as a universal Photoshop allowance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Photoshop easy to learn?
Photoshop is learnable, but it is not simple. Beginners can use built-in tutorials, contextual tips and guided workflows to complete tasks such as removing an object or replacing a background. The difficulty increases when the goal is to create a clean, editable and repeatable production file.
The core concepts worth learning first are layers, masks, selections, adjustment layers and smart objects. Once those are understood, Photoshop’s large interface becomes more manageable. Without them, users often paint directly onto the only layer, flatten documents too early or struggle to reverse an edit.
For a casual user who only crops, straightens, changes exposure or makes a quick collage, the interface and subscription are disproportionate to the task. Pixelmator Pro, Photos, Preview, Adobe Express or Photoshop Elements may be more comfortable.

Photoshop pricing and subscription terms
Adobe’s U.S. individual pricing observed on August 18, 2026 was:
| Plan | Price signal | What matters for Mac users |
|---|---|---|
| Photoshop standalone | $22.99/month on an annual, billed-monthly plan, or $263.88/year prepaid | Photoshop desktop, web and mobile, 100GB storage and 25 monthly generative credits |
| Photography | $19.99/month on an annual, billed-monthly plan | Photoshop, Lightroom, 1TB storage and 4,000 monthly generative credits |
| Creative Cloud Pro | Normally $69.99/month; a displayed introductory offer was $34.99/month for the first three months for eligible new subscribers | Photoshop plus more than 20 Adobe applications; broader AI and storage terms apply |
| Students and teachers Creative Cloud Pro | $19.99/month for the first year, then $39.99/month, subject to eligibility and terms | Photoshop and the wider Creative Cloud application bundle |
Prices, taxes, promotions and plan contents vary by country. Annual, billed-monthly plans are not the same as month-to-month plans, so read the cancellation terms shown at checkout.

Which Photoshop plan should you choose?
- Choose standalone Photoshop if you specifically need Photoshop and do not want Lightroom. It is difficult to recommend on price alone because the current Photography plan costs less on Adobe’s U.S. annual-billed-monthly pricing while adding Lightroom and more storage.
- Choose the Photography plan if you are a photographer who manages RAW files, catalogs a library and occasionally sends selected images into Photoshop for compositing or detailed retouching. It is the strongest value for many photographers.
- Choose Creative Cloud Pro if you will genuinely use several Adobe applications for design, illustration, video, publishing or agency work. It is poor value if Photoshop is the only application you need.
- Choose Photoshop Elements if you want Adobe’s ecosystem with a less intimidating interface, guided modes and a hobbyist-focused workflow. It is not simply a cheaper version of full Photoshop; the tools, licensing model and update cycle differ.
Photoshop alternatives for Mac
| Alternative | Best for | Main advantage | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lightroom | Catalogs, RAW development and batch editing | Strong asset management and photographer-focused workflow | Less capable for complex composites, typography and pixel-level design |
| Photoshop Elements | Beginners and hobbyists | Quick, Advanced and Guided modes | Not the full professional Photoshop toolset or ecosystem |
| Pixelmator Pro | Mac users wanting a streamlined editor | Mac-focused interface, layers, masks, templates and a standalone option | Fewer Photoshop-specific plugins and ecosystem advantages; third-party coverage has also noted brush pressure and canvas-rotation limitations in reviewed versions |
| Affinity Photo | Users avoiding Adobe’s recurring subscription | Professional editing tools outside Adobe’s subscription model | Different workflow and less Adobe-native interoperability; verify current pricing and licensing |
| GIMP | Users who need free, open-source software | Available for Mac, Windows and Linux | Different interface and a potentially steep migration for Photoshop users |
| Capture One | Studio, tethered and advanced RAW workflows | Strong color tools, RAW processing and tethering | Not a complete replacement for Photoshop’s compositing, typography and generative editing |
Pixelmator Pro is the most natural alternative for a Mac owner who values simplicity and a standalone application. Affinity Photo is worth considering when avoiding Adobe’s subscription is the primary requirement, but current ownership, pricing and licensing should be checked directly. GIMP is the budget choice, while Capture One is better viewed as a Lightroom-class RAW and studio competitor than as a complete Photoshop substitute.
Who should subscribe?
- Professional retoucher or digital artist: Photoshop remains the safest recommendation because of its masks, layers, smart objects, plugins, typography and industry compatibility.
- Photographer with a large library: Choose the Photography plan rather than standalone Photoshop if Lightroom’s catalog and RAW workflow are useful.
- Designer, illustrator or agency: Consider Creative Cloud Pro only when its other applications will be part of the regular workflow.
- Beginner: Start with Elements or a simpler Mac editor unless you specifically want to learn Photoshop’s professional workflow.
- Occasional editor: Use Photos, Preview, Adobe Express or Pixelmator Pro for basic corrections and quick graphics.
- Subscription-averse user: Compare Affinity Photo, Pixelmator Pro and GIMP, while checking their current licensing and compatibility before buying.
Final verdict
Adobe Photoshop remains the strongest general-purpose image editor for Mac when the job involves accurate selections, editable layers, masks, compositing, retouching, typography or professional file exchange. Adobe’s newer AI features make common tasks faster, while on-device processing and improved nondestructive adjustments strengthen the desktop workflow.
It is not the best choice for every Mac owner. Lightroom is better for cataloging and batch photography, Elements is friendlier for beginners, and Pixelmator Pro, Affinity Photo or GIMP may offer better value for users who do not want a subscription. For photographers who want both a serious catalog and Photoshop’s pixel-level control, the Photography plan is the most compelling option.
