Adobe’s new Photoshop phone app is a full Photoshop-style mobile editor—not Adobe’s first Photoshop-branded mobile product. Photoshop launched worldwide on iPhone on February 25, 2025, followed by an Android beta on June 3, 2025. The free download combines layers, masks, selections, adjustments, and compositing with Firefly-powered tools such as Generative Fill, Generative Expand, and Text to Image.
The important distinction is that Photoshop’s object-selection tools and Firefly’s generative tools do different jobs. Photoshop can identify and isolate a person, plant, car, or other subject; Firefly can then generate, remove, or extend content within a selected area.

What Adobe actually launched
Adobe launched a new, phone-optimized Photoshop experience for iPhone on February 25, 2025, and brought it to Android as a beta on June 3, 2025. It is free to download, but some advanced tools and Photoshop-on-the-web access require an eligible paid plan.
Calling it Adobe’s “first Photoshop mobile app” is too broad. Adobe previously offered Photoshop Express and Photoshop for iPad. The more accurate description is Adobe’s first full Photoshop phone app.
The app sits between simplified mobile editors and desktop Photoshop. It brings a substantial layer-based editing workflow to a phone, but it does not provide complete desktop feature parity.
Launch timeline
- February 25, 2025: Photoshop launched worldwide on iPhone through the Apple App Store.
- June 3, 2025: Photoshop arrived on Android as a beta through Google Play.
- 2026: Adobe continued adding mobile and web AI capabilities, including AI Assistant-related features and newer prompt-based editing tools.
The 2025 launch is now historical, so availability and features should be checked against Adobe’s current Photoshop mobile page and the relevant app store listing.
What Firefly adds
Firefly is responsible for Photoshop mobile’s generative features, not every AI-assisted or automated function in the app.

Generative Fill
Generative Fill adds or removes content inside a selected area using a text prompt. For example, you can select an empty patch of sky and ask Photoshop to add clouds, or select a distracting object and generate a replacement background.
Generative Expand
Generative Expand extends an image beyond its original edges. It is useful for turning a tightly cropped landscape into a wider banner or adapting an image to a different social-media aspect ratio.
Text to Image
Text to Image creates new visual assets from a written description. This is closer to image ideation than conventional retouching and can be useful for backgrounds, concepts, and composited elements.
Adobe says its Firefly models are trained on content it has permission to use, including licensed Adobe Stock and public-domain material, and that generated content receives Content Credentials indicating AI involvement. Those are Adobe’s product and policy claims, not a blanket legal guarantee that every commercial use is risk-free. Users still need rights clearance for their own assets, prompts, logos, likenesses, and final use.
Object detection is not the same as Firefly generation
The headline phrase “Firefly-powered object detection” is misleading if it suggests that one AI system performs every task. Photoshop mobile combines several technologies:
- Object Select: Identifies subjects such as people, plants, cars, and other objects so they can be isolated.
- Tap Select: Available in the Android launch experience for selecting or replacing parts of an image by tapping them.
- Magic Wand: Helps isolate regions with similar color or tone, particularly on iPhone.
- Firefly generative tools: Add, remove, extend, or create content from prompts.
- Traditional Photoshop controls: Layers, masks, blend modes, adjustments, typography, and manual retouching.
Automated selection can struggle with hair, transparent objects, reflections, low contrast, overlapping subjects, and cluttered backgrounds. When that happens, refine the selection manually with Photoshop’s selection and masking controls.

A practical Photoshop-and-Firefly workflow
- Import a photo into Photoshop mobile.
- Use Tap Select, Object Select, or another selection tool to isolate a person, vehicle, plant, or other subject.
- Apply a targeted adjustment, transform the subject, remove it, or place it on another layer.
- Use Generative Fill to add or replace content inside the selected area.
- Review the generated variations and correct edges, shadows, color, or perspective with ordinary Photoshop tools.
This workflow matters because generative AI does not remove the need for editing judgment. A good selection can constrain the generation, while layers, masks, Clone Stamp, Remove Tool, and manual cleanup can make the final result more believable.
Core Photoshop tools on a phone
Adobe’s launch materials identify a range of conventional editing features, including:
- Layers and masks for non-destructive compositing.
- Image blending and advanced blend modes.
- Color correction and targeted adjustments.
- Typography using Adobe Fonts.
- Object selection and subject isolation.
- Remove Tool, Clone Stamp, and Content-Aware Fill through premium access.
- Export to formats including PSD, TIF, JPG, and PNG.
- Harmonize in newer releases, which can adapt an inserted object’s lighting, color, and shadows to its scene.
Adobe’s mobile release notes also describe newer AI-assisted editing capabilities, including AI Assistant features and prompt-based edits. These arrived after the original February 2025 launch and should not be confused with the app’s initial feature set.
What is free and what requires payment?
The app’s download and some editing capabilities are free. Premium tools, additional generative use, and access to related Photoshop web features depend on the plan and account. Existing Photoshop subscribers should check whether mobile access is already included before buying another subscription.
Adobe’s original launch pricing was US$7.99 per month or US$69.99 per year for the Photoshop Mobile and Web plan. That is launch pricing, not a current price.

iPhone
Adobe announced worldwide iPhone availability through the App Store on February 25, 2025. Supported iPhone generations, storage requirements, and feature availability can change, so use the current App Store listing rather than relying on the launch announcement.
Android
At launch, Adobe required Android 11 or later and at least 6 GB of RAM. Adobe recommended 8 GB or more for optimal performance, and the initial Android release was labeled beta. Check Google Play for current device eligibility because requirements and supported models may change.
iPhone and Android do not necessarily receive identical features at the same time. Adobe maintains a platform comparison page for current differences.

Cloud documents and cross-device editing
Photoshop mobile is designed to connect with Adobe’s wider workflow. A project can begin on a phone and continue in Photoshop on the web or desktop, provided the relevant Adobe account, cloud access, storage, and plan support are available.
This is not the same as replacing desktop Photoshop with an offline phone editor. Cloud documents may require network access, and complex PSD files or unsupported desktop features may not behave identically on mobile. If a file opens incorrectly, simplify unsupported elements or continue the project on Photoshop web or desktop.

Firefly mobile is a separate product available on iOS and Android. Photoshop mobile is the better choice when the starting point is an existing image that needs controlled compositing, masking, and retouching rather than a prompt alone.
Limitations to expect
- Free does not mean unlimited: premium tools and generative features may require a subscription or consume plan allowances.
- Generative results are variable: AI can produce artifacts, incorrect geometry, unnatural edges, inconsistent details, or implausible shadows.
- Selections are imperfect: hair, glass, reflections, low contrast, and overlapping subjects often require manual refinement.
- Phones are cramped: detailed masking and pixel-level retouching are less comfortable on a small screen than on a desktop.
- Cloud workflows have dependencies: syncing can require an Adobe account, network access, and available cloud storage.
- Platform parity is not guaranteed: features can differ between iPhone and Android or arrive at different times.
- It is not a desktop replacement: plugins, automation, advanced color management, and the full Photoshop workspace remain desktop strengths.
When Photoshop mobile is a good choice
Choose it if you already use Photoshop and want to make quick edits away from a computer, or if you need more control than a filter-based editor provides. It is particularly useful for thumbnails, social graphics, collages, marketing images, background changes, and quick compositing.
It is less suitable if you want a completely free editor, instant templates, Lightroom-style cataloging, professional desktop automation, or perfectly predictable generative results. Owners of older Android phones should also verify compatibility before planning a workflow around it.
Bottom line
Photoshop mobile is significant because it brings Photoshop’s core compositing model—not merely filters—to phones. Its strongest workflow combines automated selection, layers, masks, and ordinary editing controls with Firefly’s Generative Fill, Generative Expand, and Text to Image tools.
It is best viewed as a capable companion to Photoshop web and desktop, not a complete replacement for them. The app is free to start, but meaningful premium and generative features depend on Adobe’s current plans, credits, platform support, and cloud workflow.
