DPReview was genuinely scheduled to close in 2023, but that is no longer the outcome. Amazon announced a shutdown, then Gear Patrol acquired DPReview in June 2023. The site continued publishing under its new owner and announced a major redesign and migration to shared Gear Patrol infrastructure in 2026.
So the accurate summary is: DPReview survived Amazon’s planned closure and remains an active photography publication—but its future is not permanently guaranteed.

On March 21, 2023, Amazon announced that DPReview would close as part of its annual operating-plan review and broader restructuring. DPReview had operated for nearly 25 years and had been owned by Amazon since 2007, when Amazon announced its acquisition of the site.
The planned end of normal operations was April 10, 2023. Amazon’s original plan was not to hand the publication to another owner; it was to stop operating the site and preserve its material as an archive. Contemporary reporting on the announcement described the decision as part of Amazon’s operating review.
#1 Best Overall
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
That announcement understandably alarmed photographers. DPReview was more than a stream of camera news. Its long-running reviews, technical specifications, studio-scene comparisons, sample galleries, buying guides, forums and product database had become a reference library for people researching cameras and lenses.
Why DPReview mattered
DPReview’s value came from the depth and continuity of its coverage. Its archive documented the transition from early digital cameras to modern mirrorless systems, giving readers a way to compare products across generations rather than relying only on current marketing pages.
Recommended Free Tools
- Reviews: Detailed evaluations of camera bodies, lenses and related equipment.
- Image-quality tools: Studio scenes, sample images and comparison features that helped readers assess differences between cameras.
- Reference data: Specifications, product pages and historical coverage.
- Community: A large photography forum audience and years of user discussions.
- Buying context: News, buying guides and practical explanations around new releases.
Secondary coverage described the archive as containing thousands of news articles, more than a thousand reviews and tens of millions of forum posts. Those figures should be treated as reported descriptions rather than independently audited totals. The broader point is not in doubt: closing DPReview would have removed or endangered an unusually substantial photography reference.
Gear Patrol changed the outcome
In June 2023, DPReview announced that it had been acquired by Gear Patrol. The acquisition changed the site’s future from an archive-only shutdown plan to continued operation as a photography-focused editorial brand.
Rank #2
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
That distinction matters. Saying that “Amazon shut down DPReview” leaves out the acquisition that followed. Saying that “DPReview was never going to shut down” is also wrong: Amazon did announce a closure and gave April 10, 2023 as the expected end date for normal operations.
The most accurate sequence is:
- Amazon owned DPReview after acquiring it in 2007.
- On March 21, 2023, Amazon announced that DPReview would close.
- The announced closure date was April 10, 2023, with content expected to remain as an archive.
- In June 2023, DPReview announced its acquisition by Gear Patrol.
- DPReview continued operating and publishing under the new ownership.
The available evidence supports describing Gear Patrol as DPReview’s new owner. It does not establish the purchase price, transaction structure, staffing guarantees or exact editorial budget, so those details should not be inferred.

Archive access is not the same as an active publication
After Amazon’s announcement, DPReview said its content would remain available as an archive. That would have preserved access to historical material, but an archive-only site is fundamentally different from a publication that continues to commission and publish new work, maintain its community and develop its tools.
Gear Patrol’s acquisition mattered because DPReview did not remain limited to that archive-only future. Its editorial identity and audience continued with the site under new ownership.

Readers should still avoid assuming that survival means every legacy feature is unchanged. Ownership changes and platform migrations can affect:
- Page URLs and search results.
- Account and forum functionality.
- Camera comparison tools and filters.
- Image galleries and older interactive features.
- Navigation, layouts and links into legacy reviews.
The 2026 redesign is evidence that DPReview remains active
On April 24, 2026, DPReview announced what it described as its first major redesign in more than 25 years. The site was being moved onto a modern shared platform with Gear Patrol, with the stated goal of making it more efficient to invest in new features and improvements while retaining DPReview’s editorial identity. The redesign was reported by TechYahoo.
A major redesign is strong evidence that DPReview is an active property rather than a dormant archive. It also suggests continuing investment in infrastructure. However, it does not prove that the business is financially secure or protected from future ownership changes.
Some users have reported problems with filtering, navigation and camera-comparison functionality during the transition. These reports are anecdotal and should not be treated as proof that features have been permanently removed. Migration-related problems can be temporary, while some older tools may also be redesigned or replaced. Readers looking for a specific comparison should check the current site rather than assume that a pre-migration link or workflow will behave exactly as it did before.

What is known—and what remains uncertain
Established facts
- DPReview began in 1998.
- Amazon announced its acquisition on May 14, 2007.
- Amazon announced a planned closure on March 21, 2023.
- The planned end of normal operations was April 10, 2023.
- DPReview announced new ownership by Gear Patrol in June 2023.
- DPReview continued operating after the acquisition.
- DPReview announced a major redesign and migration to shared Gear Patrol infrastructure in 2026.
Not established by the available evidence
- That DPReview is financially secure indefinitely.
- That Gear Patrol guarantees editorial independence.
- That every legacy review, forum function and comparison tool works exactly as before.
- That the redesign was fully complete by August 2026.
- That DPReview will never face another closure or ownership change.
Ownership and editorial independence are separate questions. Gear Patrol’s ownership explains why DPReview continued, but the available reporting does not establish a formal editorial-independence policy or guaranteed staffing arrangement.
What readers should do with older DPReview information
For ordinary reading, DPReview remains available as an active site. For important historical information—such as a hard-to-find technical explanation, compatibility detail or comparison—sensible digital preservation is worthwhile. Save or print material you rely on, particularly if it is tied to an old URL or an interactive tool.

That is a practical response to changing websites, not evidence that another shutdown is imminent. The current evidence points to continued operation and investment, while leaving the longer-term business outlook unknown.
