Adobe’s January 27, 2026 Photoshop update improves four core AI editing workflows: Generative Fill, Generative Expand, Reference Image for Generative Fill, and the Remove Tool. Adobe says the changes bring better prompt matching, more natural lighting and depth, cleaner edge blending, and more reliable object compositing.
The most significant improvement is Reference Image for Generative Fill. Photoshop now aims to preserve the identity of a supplied object while adapting its scale, rotation, perspective, color, and lighting to the destination image. The update is available in Photoshop desktop, while Adobe said the named Firefly-powered Fill, Expand, and Remove improvements would also come to Photoshop on the web.
What changed in Photoshop’s January 2026 update?
Adobe’s corresponding desktop release-community post identifies the update as Photoshop 27.3. The update focuses on practical image editing rather than generating an entire finished image from scratch.

Adobe says Generative Fill and Generative Expand use its latest Firefly Fill and Expand model, while the updated Remove Tool is identified as Remove Tool 3. These labels should not be read as meaning every Photoshop AI feature uses one identical model.

The biggest improvement: Reference Image for Generative Fill
Reference Image lets you provide an image of the object or appearance you want Photoshop to use while generating inside a selected area. The January update is designed to make this compositing more geometry-aware.
In practical terms, Photoshop attempts to preserve the referenced object’s identity while adapting it to the target scene. That includes its approximate scale, rotation, perspective, color, lighting, and relationship to nearby objects. A product or prop should look less like a flat pasted cutout and more like an element that belongs in the photograph.
The workflow is particularly useful for concept art, advertising mockups, editorial illustration, social campaigns, and early-stage product visualization. It is not a guarantee of exact duplication. Generated results can still alter product geometry, logos, labels, reflections, small details, or proportions.

You may still need a layer mask, Transform or Warp, adjustment layers, manual shadows, and retouching. For legally or commercially sensitive product images, use the original vector or photographic asset when exact accuracy matters.
How to use the upgraded tools
Generative Fill
- Open an image in Photoshop.
- Make a selection around the area you want to add, replace, or remove.
- Use the Contextual Task Bar and choose Generative Fill.
- Enter a descriptive prompt, or leave it blank when Photoshop should infer the content from the surrounding image.
- If available, choose an Adobe Firefly or partner model from the model picker.
- Select Generate, then compare the variations.
Generative Fill normally creates a nondestructive generative layer or variation rather than permanently painting over the original pixels. If the result is wrong, refine the selection, rewrite the prompt, choose another variation, or generate again on a separate layer.

Adobe’s current Generative Fill documentation explains that the model picker shown in the Contextual Task Bar can vary by account, version, and supported model.
Generative Expand
- Select the Crop tool.
- Drag the canvas beyond the original image boundaries.
- Use the contextual generative option.
- Enter a prompt only if the continuation needs specific content; otherwise let Photoshop infer the scene.
- Generate and compare the variations.
Generative Expand is useful when adapting a landscape image to a wider banner, preparing a portrait for a social format, or recovering a subject that was framed too tightly. It is more difficult around hair, architecture, crowds, repeated patterns, and strong perspective lines. If the transition is visible, overlap the generated area farther into the original image and blend it with a mask or manual retouching.

Reference Image
- Select the area where the object should appear.
- Start Generative Fill.
- Add an image through the Reference Image control.
- Describe the intended object or transformation in the prompt.
- Generate several variations.
- Check identity, scale, perspective, lighting, and contact shadows.
A more precise selection helps define the intended footprint, but it does not force Photoshop to reproduce every pixel of the reference. Manual compositing remains the better choice when shape, branding, or technical specifications cannot change.
Remove Tool
- Select the Remove Tool.
- Set the brush slightly larger than the unwanted object.
- Brush over the person, wire, sign, or other distraction.
- Inspect the reconstructed background.
- Repeat with smaller strokes or finish with Clone Stamp, Healing Brush, or Content-Aware Fill.
The upgraded Remove Tool is intended to make common cleanup faster, but it is not a replacement for precision retouching. Examine repeating textures, shadows, reflections, architectural lines, and edges near other subjects.
What results should you expect?
Adobe’s claims are about improved realism and control, not universal accuracy. The update should be most useful when the job involves plausible continuation or cleanup rather than exact reconstruction.

- Likely improvements: cleaner transitions, better prompt matching, more convincing lighting and depth, faster removal of everyday distractions, and more useful canvas expansion.
- Continuing weaknesses: incorrect text, malformed hands or faces, inconsistent jewelry, altered logos, unstable product geometry, broken repeating patterns, and mismatched reflections.
- Professional requirement: review the result at 100 percent and at its intended output size. A convincing thumbnail can still contain obvious structural errors when enlarged.
Do not treat a generated result as automatically production-ready. Keep the original image, preserve generated results on separate layers, and use masks and manual retouching wherever accuracy matters.
Desktop, web, mobile, and on-device processing
The January update was announced for Photoshop desktop. Adobe also said the Firefly-powered Generative Fill, Generative Expand, and Remove Tool improvements would be available in Photoshop on the web.
That does not mean all Photoshop AI features are available on every platform. Availability can depend on the application surface, version, account, region, plan, and model. Photoshop mobile and web also gained later AI Assistant-related functionality, but those announcements should not be confused with the January editing update.
Most Firefly-powered generative workflows involve Adobe’s online generative AI services and generative-credit accounting. Photoshop 27.7 also documented an on-device Remove Tool path with a stated minimum of 14GB of VRAM in that specific implementation context. That is not a universal hardware requirement for Generative Fill, Generative Expand, or every Photoshop AI feature.

Photoshop can expose a model picker in the Contextual Task Bar, allowing users to choose an Adobe Firefly model or, where supported, a partner model. Model availability and feature support can differ, so do not assume that every model supports every reference-image or editing workflow.

Adobe’s current feature and credit rules also distinguish standard and premium AI features. Most standard generations use one credit per generation, while qualifying Creative Cloud Pro and Firefly plans offer unlimited standard generations. Credits reset monthly according to the plan’s billing or reset date and do not roll over. Check the Generative Credits Usage information inside Photoshop when an unexpected charge or limit appears.
Adobe’s US pricing page has shown the following price signals, but prices, promotions, regional availability, billing terms, and credit allowances can change:
- Photoshop Single App: a US$22.99-per-month annual plan billed monthly, with 25 monthly generative credits on the cited US pricing page.
- Creative Cloud Pro: US$69.99 per month on an annual, billed-monthly plan, with unlimited standard AI features and 4,000 monthly credits for premium features on the cited page.
- Photoshop Mobile and Web: Adobe announced US$7.99 per month or US$69.99 annually in February 2025. This is aimed at lighter mobile and web use rather than full desktop production.
See Adobe’s current Creative Cloud pricing page before subscribing. The practical question is not simply whether a plan includes Generative Fill, but how often you use it, which generations are treated as premium, and whether you need the rest of the Creative Cloud ecosystem.

Common problems and fixes
- The reference object looks pasted in: refine the selection, regenerate with a clearer prompt, then add manual shadows and color adjustments.
- The object has the wrong scale or perspective: make the target selection better match the intended footprint and use Transform or Warp afterward.
- Fill or Expand leaves a seam: enlarge the selection slightly so generated content overlaps the original, then blend with a mask or Clone Stamp.
- Patterns become incoherent: generate smaller regions and preserve a clean source section for manual repair.
- Text or logos are wrong: recreate typography manually or place the original vector or logo asset.
- Faces or hands are malformed: regenerate with a tighter selection or retouch manually; a newer model does not guarantee anatomical accuracy.
- Generations are unavailable: check login status, plan eligibility, internet access, credit balance, and whether the selected model is supported on that surface.
- The old Firefly Image 3 option is missing: Adobe says it was removed from the Photoshop model picker beginning with version 27.6 on April 28, 2026. It remained temporarily usable in versions 26.0 through 27.5 until August.
Version timeline and later announcements
- January 27, 2026: Adobe announced the Fill, Expand, Reference Image, and Remove Tool improvements. The desktop release was identified as Photoshop 27.3.
- April 28, 2026: Firefly Image 3 was removed from the model picker beginning with Photoshop 27.6, creating differences between older tutorials and current interfaces.
- May 20, 2026: Photoshop 27.7 was reported with further AI and performance changes, including the version-specific on-device Remove Tool implementation requiring at least 14GB of VRAM.
- March 10, 2026: Adobe separately announced Photoshop AI Assistant for web and mobile and expanded Firefly editing tools.
- June 18, 2026: Adobe announced a broader Creative Agent expansion across Firefly and Creative Cloud, with AI Assistants entering public beta in Photoshop and other applications.
The March and June announcements are useful context, but they are not additional features from the January Photoshop upgrade. Adobe’s current generative-feature overview also lists tools such as Generative Upscale, Generate Image, Generate Background, Generate Similar, and Harmonize. These should be considered part of Photoshop’s broader AI toolbox, not automatically part of the January release.
When the upgrade is worth using
The upgrade is a strong fit for existing Photoshop users who regularly remove distractions, reframe images, create composites, or explore several visual directions while retaining Photoshop’s layers and masks.

It is less compelling as a reason to subscribe if your work requires exact typography, unaltered product geometry, predictable high-volume costs, completely local processing, or consistent characters and objects across many images. In those cases, manual Photoshop tools—including Clone Stamp, Healing Brush, Content-Aware Fill, masks, adjustment layers, and conventional compositing—remain more controllable.
Separate AI image generators can be useful for ideation and images created from scratch, but they add export and import steps. Non-Adobe editors such as Affinity Photo, GIMP, Pixelmator Pro, and Canva may suit users whose priority is avoiding Adobe’s subscription ecosystem, although their current prices and AI capabilities should be checked directly before choosing one.

Provenance and commercial use
Adobe says Firefly-powered Photoshop mobile and web content can receive Content Credentials identifying AI involvement. That improves provenance transparency, but it is not proof that an image is factually true.
Adobe also describes Firefly training as based on licensed Adobe Stock and public-domain material where copyright has expired. That is Adobe’s position and should not be interpreted as a universal legal clearance for every user input, output, client contract, jurisdiction, or use case. Review client, editorial, documentary, medical, and advertising requirements before using generated imagery.
