ChatGPT Cheat Sheet Poster AI Model Prompts & Responses Guide (222) Canvas Painting for Living Room... | $21.67 | Buy on Amazon |
The symbol most people call the ChatGPT logo is technically Blossom, OpenAI’s knot-like logomark. ChatGPT uses it as its product icon, but the mark was developed as part of OpenAI’s broader corporate identity before ChatGPT launched. Its history is therefore primarily the history of OpenAI’s brand—and of how ChatGPT made that brand globally recognizable.
The “ChatGPT logo” is OpenAI’s Blossom mark
ChatGPT is an OpenAI product, and the interlocking black-and-white symbol shown in its interfaces is OpenAI’s Blossom logomark. “ChatGPT logo” is a useful shorthand, but it can imply that the symbol was designed exclusively for the chatbot. The available documentation supports a more precise description: it is the OpenAI mark used prominently as ChatGPT’s icon.

That distinction matters because the corporate identity predates ChatGPT’s public launch. OpenAI developed a wider visual system for its growing organization and product portfolio, then ChatGPT brought that system to an enormous general audience.
OpenAI’s current brand guidance identifies Blossom as a combination of circular forms associated with human-centered thinking and right angles associated with technological precision. It does not describe the mark as an Eye of Horus, an infinity symbol, an Armenian eternity sign, or a literal botanical flower. Those interpretations circulate online, but they are not established parts of OpenAI’s documented design history.
OpenAI’s current brand guidelines are the best source for the mark’s official name, meaning and usage requirements.
The logo predates ChatGPT
OpenAI was founded in 2015 as an artificial-intelligence research organization. The company therefore needed an identity before ChatGPT became a consumer phenomenon. However, the available documentation does not establish a complete, asset-by-asset logo chronology from 2015 through 2021. It is safer not to present an invented sequence of early logos.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe clearest documented milestone is OpenAI’s engagement with the design studio AREA 17 in 2021. The project focused on a broader design system and website as OpenAI prepared to communicate with a much wider public audience and expand beyond a specialist research community.
AREA 17’s 2021 identity project
AREA 17’s account describes an identity intended to make advanced AI feel more approachable without making it seem unserious or imprecise. The design direction balanced technical rigor with warmth, curiosity and human-centered communication.
That approach deliberately moved away from familiar visual clichés: glowing circuitry, humanoid robots, cold futuristic interfaces and imagery associated with science-fiction dystopias. Instead, OpenAI’s system combined restrained foundations with expressive accents, technical clarity, human imagery and references to the history of computing.
This work was not simply a logo commission. It addressed how OpenAI should present its mission, products and ideas across a website, editorial material, interfaces and future product launches.

The strongest historical record immediately before ChatGPT’s public launch is the OpenAI brand-guidelines document prepared by AREA 17, dated September 2022. It recorded version 1.0.1 of a system that included much more than the Blossom mark.
The guidelines covered:
- OpenAI’s mission and brand values
- The Blossom logomark and OpenAI logotype
- Clear-space and minimum-size requirements
- Color systems and applications
- Typography
- Iconography
- Photography
- Data visualization
- Product and editorial applications
Summaries of the system identify five values: gravitas, precision, approachability, allure and boldness. The mark’s effectiveness came partly from its relationship with this larger system. Consistent typography, monochrome foundations, bright accents, human-centered imagery and retro-computing references helped create a recognizable world around the symbol.
The 2022 guidelines are significant because they show that the identity was already established before ChatGPT’s launch. The chatbot did not originate the visual system; it dramatically increased the number of people who encountered it.
ChatGPT launches and amplifies the mark
ChatGPT launched publicly as a free research preview on November 30, 2022, built on GPT‑3.5. In that launch context, it used the existing OpenAI visual identity and knot-like mark rather than introducing a wholly separate product logo.
The available source material does not provide a complete official, asset-by-asset record of every icon color or platform treatment used on launch day. The defensible conclusion is narrower: ChatGPT adopted the established OpenAI identity, and its extraordinary visibility made Blossom strongly associated with conversational AI.
In design terms, the symbol became recognizable through distribution as much as through geometry. It appeared repeatedly across web, mobile and desktop experiences while ChatGPT moved rapidly from a research preview into a mainstream product. That repeated, consistent exposure helped turn a corporate mark into what many readers now identify simply as the ChatGPT icon.
ChatGPT’s launch date is documented in Sam Altman’s reflections and in a contemporaneous technical brief from the National Association of Counties.
What does the Blossom symbol mean?
OpenAI’s official explanation is a meeting of organic and engineered qualities:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Circles suggest the fluidity and warmth of human-centered thinking.
- Right angles suggest the precision and structure associated with technology.
- The intersection represents the dynamic relationship between humanity and technology.
OpenAI calls the mark “Blossom,” but that name does not mean the symbol is a literal flower. Its repeated, radial forms can evoke a flower-like structure, while the official explanation remains conceptual rather than botanical.
It is reasonable to interpret the interlocking geometry as suggesting continuity, collaboration, recursion or an ongoing exchange. Those are design readings, not additional official meanings. Claims that the mark secretly represents the Eye of Horus, infinity, a religious symbol or a coded message should not be presented as documented design history.
What changed in the 2025 OpenAI brand refresh?
In February 2025, OpenAI introduced a brand refresh. It was a refinement of the existing identity rather than a clean replacement of Blossom.
Reported changes included:
- A redrawn or adjusted Blossom geometry
- More consistent stroke treatment
- An updated OpenAI wordmark
- The introduction of the custom OpenAI Sans typeface
- A new “point” mark
- A clearer relationship between the symbol and the wordmark
Fast Company reported that the refresh involved a nine-month collaboration among OpenAI’s internal design team, Studio Dumbar and Dinamo. The precise responsibilities of each contributor should not be reduced to the claim that one outside studio alone designed every version of the identity.
Creative Review framed the refresh as part of OpenAI’s transition from a specialist research organization into one of the world’s most visible AI brands. The practical design objective was to make the system work across a larger product portfolio while improving typographic and visual consistency.
The 2025 update is best understood as a maturation of the system: tighter construction, custom typography and clearer hierarchy, while retaining the mark that users already recognized.

As of September 2026, OpenAI’s current brand page identifies the official corporate mark as the black-and-white Blossom symbol. The guidance says not to add colors to Blossom and requires prescribed spacing and sufficient open space around it.
The Blossom mark and the OpenAI wordmark are separate elements. OpenAI’s guidance also indicates that Blossom is not ordinarily intended to function as the primary branding by itself in corporate lockups; the correct pairing depends on the application.

Product icons can vary by platform and release. A web favicon, mobile icon, desktop icon, loading indicator and marketing lockup should not automatically be treated as different corporate logos. OpenAI’s iOS support page, for example, shows the official ChatGPT iOS icon as a black OpenAI knot on a white background. Any screenshot used as historical evidence should identify its platform, approximate date and source.
Can you use the ChatGPT or OpenAI logo?
The mark is an OpenAI brand asset, not a public-domain symbol. Its widespread recognition does not grant unrestricted permission to copy, modify or commercialize it.
OpenAI’s current brand guidance says users should:
- Use the logo only when it directly relates to OpenAI services.
- Use supplied artwork without modification.
- Acknowledge OpenAI ownership where appropriate.
- Avoid implying endorsement, sponsorship or partnership.
- Keep OpenAI’s mark from becoming more prominent than the user’s own branding.
- Obtain authorization before using it on merchandise or promotional products.
- Avoid incorporating it into another trademark or brand identity.
For approved artwork and the current rules, use OpenAI’s official brand page. Do not rely on an undated image-search result or an unofficial “ChatGPT logo” download.

What the history actually shows
The familiar ChatGPT symbol was not created in isolation for a chatbot. OpenAI’s documented identity work began before ChatGPT’s November 2022 launch, with AREA 17 helping develop a system intended to balance technical precision and human accessibility.
ChatGPT made the mark famous by placing it at the center of a highly visible product ecosystem. The 2025 refresh then refined the same identity through adjusted geometry, a new wordmark, OpenAI Sans and a clearer brand hierarchy. The most accurate description today is therefore: the ChatGPT icon is OpenAI’s Blossom logomark, adapted for use in the ChatGPT product.
