Adobe’s April 24, 2025 Firefly launch introduced Image Model 4, Image Model 4 Ultra, a vector-generation model, Firefly Boards and a redesigned web app that brought Adobe and selected third-party AI models into one creative workspace. The release was important less because it added another image generator than because Adobe repositioned Firefly as a multi-model production hub for generating, editing, organizing and delivering creative work.
One important update for readers arriving today: Image Model 4 is no longer Adobe’s newest image model. Adobe introduced Image Model 5 in October 2025 and expanded Firefly further during 2026. The April 2025 release remains useful context for understanding how Adobe’s current Firefly workflow took shape.

What Adobe launched on April 24, 2025
Adobe’s announcement was a package of connected Firefly updates rather than a single model release. It included:
- Firefly Image Model 4, a general-purpose image-generation model designed for speed, realism and greater control.
- Firefly Image Model 4 Ultra, aimed at complex scenes with small structures and dense detail.
- A new Firefly vector model for generating vector artwork.
- A redesigned Firefly web app combining Adobe tools, generation and selected partner models.
- Firefly Boards, an AI-oriented collaborative moodboarding surface released in public beta.
- General availability for the Firefly Video Model through Firefly on the web.
- Access to selected partner models, including models from Google and OpenAI.
- A forthcoming Firefly mobile app, which Adobe described as coming soon at launch.
Adobe’s launch announcement described Image Model 4 as faster, more realistic and more controllable than earlier Firefly image models. Those are Adobe’s product claims, not the result of an independent head-to-head benchmark.

Image Model 4 vs. Image Model 4 Ultra
The practical distinction is straightforward: Image Model 4 was the everyday option for fast ideation and production concepts, while Image Model 4 Ultra was intended for demanding compositions where small objects, architecture and environmental detail matter.

Ultra should not be treated as universally better. Adobe positioned it for a narrower class of difficult images. A simpler concept may be faster and more economical to generate with the regular model, while a dense architectural scene may benefit from Ultra’s emphasis on detail.

What “more control” meant
Adobe’s control claims referred to more than choosing an art style. In practice, the intended benefit was the ability to guide the image’s structure and presentation more reliably:
- Specify a camera perspective or viewing angle.
- Control framing and zoom more deliberately.
- Preserve the broad structure of a scene while changing its style or subject details.
- Iterate on a composition without relying entirely on a fresh interpretation of the prompt.
- Use up-to-2K Image Model 4 output for cropping, recomposition and larger-format work.
That does not mean every prompt will produce exact layout control, perfect text or consistent objects. The announcement supplies Adobe’s feature positioning, not independent evidence that Image Model 4 outperforms Midjourney, OpenAI, Google, FLUX or any other system in every category.
The redesigned Firefly app was the bigger story
The web redesign changed Firefly’s role. Instead of presenting Firefly primarily as one image generator, Adobe positioned it as a central creative workspace where users could choose among models and move from rough idea to usable asset.

The redesigned environment brought together Adobe’s image, video, vector and generative editing tools, while also exposing selected third-party models. The intended workflow was:

- Ideate: collect references, prompts and visual directions.
- Generate: choose an Adobe or partner model and create image, video or vector concepts.
- Refine: remix, edit, vary and adjust promising results.
- Produce: move the asset into Adobe applications and continue working in a familiar production environment.
This is a different value proposition from a standalone image generator. Firefly’s appeal is not only the individual output. It is the connection between generation, Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Express, video tools, collaboration and delivery.
Adobe explained the redesign in its April 2025 Firefly overview. Independent coverage from TechRadar also highlighted the app’s broader creative-workspace direction.
Why Adobe added partner models
Adobe was moving from “use Firefly” toward “choose the model that fits the job.” A photographic concept, a stylized illustration, a video shot and a marketing layout may benefit from different systems. Putting those choices inside Firefly reduces the need to move between unrelated websites.
The April 2025 materials identified partner models from Google and OpenAI and referenced models including Google Imagen 3, Veo 2 and Black Forest Labs’ FLUX 1.1 Pro. The model roster has changed since then, so readers should not assume that every model announced in 2025 remains available under identical terms in 2026.

There is also an important legal and commercial distinction. Adobe says its own Firefly models are trained on licensed content, including Adobe Stock, and public-domain content whose copyright has expired. Adobe also says user content is not used to train its foundation Firefly models. These are Adobe’s stated policies.
Those statements should not automatically be extended to every partner model inside Firefly. Partner models can have different training-data disclosures, content policies, output behavior, usage terms and commercial-use considerations. A unified interface does not make the underlying models legally or technically identical.
Firefly Boards: an ideation canvas, not another image model
Firefly Boards launched in public beta as a collaborative surface for moodboarding and creative exploration. Adobe described it as an AI-first space for collecting references, exploring directions and developing concepts.
A typical Boards workflow could include:
- Collecting reference images and visual inspiration on an infinite canvas.
- Generating variations alongside those references.
- Remixing an image or using it as a starting point for another generation.
- Comparing alternate art directions before committing to production.
- Sharing a board with collaborators and using comments to develop an idea.
- Moving a promising direction into a more finished Adobe workflow.
Boards was therefore closer to a visual exploration and collaboration layer than a replacement for Photoshop. It could overlap with tools such as Milanote, Miro or a traditional moodboard, but its differentiator was the connection between collected references and generative experimentation. Whether it replaces an existing team’s board tool depends on collaboration needs, export workflows and how deeply that team already uses Adobe.

Adobe’s own Firefly models were marketed with a commercially oriented training approach. Adobe says those models are trained on licensed and public-domain material, and describes them as commercially safe. That positioning can matter to agencies, publishers and brand teams that need a clearer provenance story than an informal consumer generator provides.

It is not the same as saying that every generated image is automatically cleared for every use. Users and businesses still need to consider:
- Whether the selected model was an Adobe model or a partner model.
- Trademark, publicity-rights, privacy and likeness issues.
- Client or employer approval requirements.
- Whether an output is sufficiently original for the intended use.
- Any restrictions attached to the particular plan, model or asset.
Adobe says generated assets, or projects containing Firefly-generated assets, receive Content Credentials when downloaded or exported. These credentials can provide provenance information, but they do not guarantee that an image is legally unrestricted or that every underlying rights question has been resolved.

On April 24, 2025, Adobe stated that Image Model 4, Image Model 4 Ultra and the Firefly Video Model were generally available through Firefly on the web. Firefly Boards was in public beta, while the mobile app was described as forthcoming.

That launch-era wording should not be copied into a current buying guide without qualification. Adobe’s 2026 system uses plan-specific generative credits, standard and premium generations, model-specific limits and temporary promotions. The actual cost of a workflow can depend on the selected model, output resolution, number of generations and whether an offer applies.

Prices, regions, included models and promotions can change. Adobe’s generative-credit FAQ and promotion documentation are the appropriate places to verify current terms. “Unlimited” offers may apply only to specified models, resolutions, plans, geographies and promotional periods; some offers exclude Teams and Enterprise plans.
How Firefly compares with alternatives
Firefly is best compared by workflow rather than by an unsupported universal image-quality ranking:

Firefly is especially compelling for teams already using Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Adobe Express or Creative Cloud. It is less compelling for someone who only needs occasional images, wants the lowest possible cost, prefers local or open-model control, or needs detailed controls such as seeds, LoRAs and fine-tuning.
What happened after Image Model 4
The April 2025 launch was the beginning of the current Firefly direction, not its endpoint:
- April 24, 2025: Image Model 4, Image Model 4 Ultra, the redesigned app, Boards, vector generation, partner models and broadly available video generation.
- October 28, 2025: Adobe introduced Image Model 5, with claims including native 4-megapixel image generation and editing.
- March–April 2026: Adobe expanded the model lineup, custom-model capabilities and introduced AI Assistant and Creative Agent features.
- June 2026: Adobe announced further Firefly expansion around unified generation and editing, agents and additional partner capabilities.
- August 2026: Firefly’s current plans and promotions involved model-specific credit and unlimited-generation terms.

Who should use Firefly?
Firefly makes the most sense when the surrounding workflow matters as much as the initial image. It is a strong candidate for:

- Marketing teams creating campaign directions, layouts and social assets.
- Agencies that need model choice inside a shared Adobe environment.
- Photographers and illustrators using generation as part of an editing process.
- Businesses that value Adobe’s stated training-data approach and Content Credentials.
- Creative teams that need image, video, vector and collaborative ideation tools together.
It is not automatically the best option for every project. Specialist generators may offer a preferred visual style, a lower cost for occasional use or more technical control. Firefly’s subscription model can also become difficult to compare because standard generations, premium generations, credits and promotions do not apply identically to every model.
