To blend images in Canva, place them on the same page, layer one above the other, and adjust its Transparency. For a more realistic composite, remove the foreground background first, then use a gradient, color overlay, blur, or subtle shadow to smooth the transition.
Canva does not require a single “Blend Images” button for the effects most people want. The right method depends on whether you are creating an overlay, a fade, a cutout composite, or a double-exposure effect.

What “blend images” means in Canva
“Blending” can describe several different techniques:
- Overlay: placing one complete image over another and lowering its Transparency.
- Fade: making one edge or section of an image gradually disappear into another image or background.
- Cutout composite: removing a person, product, or object from its original background and placing it into a new scene.
- Double exposure: layering two partially transparent images so both remain visible.
These techniques use layers, transparency, cropping, gradients, and background removal. They are different from true blend modes such as Multiply, Screen, Overlay, and Soft Light, which use mathematical calculations to combine pixels.

In Canva, the most dependable general-purpose workflow is to layer images and use Transparency. If the original background must disappear, use BG Remover or Background Remover separately. Making an entire image transparent does not remove the background behind its subject.
How to overlay two images in Canva
This is the quickest method for a translucent overlay, soft texture, tinted photograph, or simple double exposure.
- Open Canva and create a new design, or open an existing design.
- Add the first image through Uploads or Canva’s image library.
- Add the second image to the same page.
- Resize and position both images so that they occupy the desired area.
- Click the image that should appear on top.
- Choose Transparency in the editor toolbar.
- Move the slider toward greater transparency until the lower image becomes visible.
- Adjust the crop, position, contrast, brightness, saturation, or blur of either image.
- Move the upper image forward or backward if the visual hierarchy is wrong.
Canva describes this Transparency-slider workflow for creating soft overlay effects in its official transparent-image guidance.
Useful starting points
These are starting points rather than fixed Canva settings:
| Effect | Suggested opacity |
|---|---|
| Subtle texture overlay | 10–25% |
| Noticeable photo overlay | 25–45% |
| Double exposure | 35–65% |
| Strong color wash | 50–80% |
The correct value depends on the brightness, contrast, colors, and detail in both images. If both photos are already busy or bright, even a moderate overlay can become confusing.
When this method works best
- Double-exposure portraits
- Landscape and silhouette combinations
- Texture overlays
- Social-media graphics
- Hero images with a color wash
- Presentation backgrounds that need readable text
How to blend a person or object into a new background
Use this method when you want a person, animal, product, or object to appear inside a different scene. Transparency alone will not achieve this because the original background remains visible.
- Add the replacement background image first.
- Add the subject image above it.
- Select the subject image.
- Choose Edit Photo or Edit Image, depending on the editor interface.
- Select BG Remover or Background Remover.
- Let Canva process the image.
- Choose Configure, if available, to refine the result.
- Use the erase and restore brushes to correct missing or unwanted areas.
- Resize and position the subject over the new background.
- Adjust brightness, contrast, warmth, saturation, and blur so the two images feel related.
- Add a subtle shadow or color overlay if the subject still looks pasted on.
Canva’s official Background Remover instructions describe detecting the foreground and refining it with erase and restore controls.
Make the composite look believable
Background removal solves the outline problem, not the entire compositing problem. Check the following:

- Light direction: Highlights and shadows should suggest the same light source.
- Perspective: The subject should appear to stand on the same visual plane as the background.
- Scale: Compare the subject with nearby objects, not just the canvas edges.
- Color temperature: A cool blue subject can look disconnected from a warm orange scene.
- Sharpness: A sharply detailed subject may look pasted onto a soft or blurred background.
- Contact shadow: A restrained shadow can help a person or product feel grounded.
- Edges: Inspect hair, fur, fingers, glass, lace, and other fine details for halos or missing areas.
Use only as much transparency as necessary. Lowering the subject’s opacity too far can make it look ghostly rather than integrated.
How to fade one image into another
Transparency affects the whole selected image uniformly. A gradient is better when only one edge should disappear gradually.

- Place the second image above it and crop it to the desired area.
- Open Elements and search for gradient, transparent gradient, or fade.
- Add a gradient element or a rectangle that transitions from opaque to transparent.
- Position the opaque side over the portion of the image you want to retain.
- Position the transparent side toward the image or color that should show through.
- Change the gradient color to match the surrounding background.
- Adjust its transparency until the transition is smooth.
Element names can vary by account, language, device, and editor version, so searching for related terms is more reliable than looking for one exact asset name.
Good uses for a gradient fade
- Making text readable over a photograph
- Fading a portrait into a solid brand color
- Creating website or presentation banners
- Blending a product image into a clean background
- Softening the edge in a before-and-after graphic
A straight gradient works well for rectangular images, but it may not follow the contours of an irregular subject. For a person or object, remove the background first and use the gradient as a supporting transition rather than as the main mask.
How to create a double-exposure effect
A double exposure keeps two images visible at once, usually by stacking them and reducing the Transparency of the upper layer.
- Choose two images with clear subjects and relatively simple shapes.
- Add the first image as the base layer.
- Add the second image above it.
- Remove the second image’s background if only its subject should appear.
- Position the upper subject over a meaningful area of the lower image.
- Reduce the upper image’s Transparency.
- Increase contrast if the subject becomes indistinct.
- Desaturate one or both images if their colors compete.
- Add a solid-color overlay or gradient to unify the palette.
- View the design at thumbnail size to check whether it still has one clear focal point.
Choose compatible images
The slider cannot compensate for two unsuitable photos. Double exposure usually works better when:

- Use transparency, a gradient element, or a cutout to soften the boundary.
- Add text above or beside the image.

How to blend images in the Canva mobile app
The mobile interface can differ between Android, iOS, and the browser editor. The workflow remains the same even when the control location changes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the design in the Canva app.
- Add both images to the same page.
- Tap the upper image.
- Swipe through the bottom editing toolbar.
- Choose Transparency and adjust the slider.
- For a cutout, choose Edit photo or the equivalent image-editing option.
- Find BG Remover or Background Remover.
- Use erase and restore controls if they are offered.
- Reposition, crop, and adjust the image.
- Export in the format appropriate for the intended use.
If you cannot see Transparency, scroll the toolbar horizontally and make sure the image itself—not a group, background, or locked element—is selected. If the mobile controls remain difficult to find, open the design in the browser editor.
How to make a blend look intentional
Give one image priority
A blended composition still needs a visual hierarchy. Lower the saturation or transparency of the supporting image, reserve the sharpest detail for the main subject, and avoid placing two faces or two high-contrast focal points directly on top of one another.
Match brightness and contrast
If one image is much darker, the other can disappear or appear pasted on. Adjust brightness and contrast before making fine Transparency changes. A slightly darker background often gives a cutout more definition.
Unify the colors
A restrained color overlay can make separate images feel as though they belong together. This is useful when one image is warm and the other is cool. Keep the overlay subtle: an aggressive color wash can remove detail and distort skin tones or product colors.
Use blur carefully
If the background is soft but the foreground is extremely sharp, a small amount of blur can improve the match. Do not blur simply to hide a poor cutout; inspect the edge first and correct it with the available erase and restore tools.
Check the composition at its actual size
Edges that look acceptable when zoomed in can become distracting in a social post or presentation thumbnail. Check the design at 100% zoom and at the approximate size at which people will see it.

Can you blend images in Canva Free?
Basic overlays, positioning, cropping, and Transparency adjustments do not require a dedicated paid “blend” feature. However, access to background removal and other editing tools can depend on your plan, account, region, device, and Canva’s current feature limits.
Canva’s official pages describe the free product for individuals, a one-time free use of the transparent-background workflow, and unlimited Background Remover access with Canva Pro. Canva also identifies tools such as Background Remover, Magic Edit, and Magic Eraser as Pro features on its AI photo-editing page. These terms can change, so check Canva’s current pricing and plan page before subscribing.

Choose PNG when:
- A transparent background must be preserved.
- You are exporting a reusable cutout.
- The graphic contains text, logos, or sharp edges.
- You plan to place the blended element into another design.
Canva’s transparent-image guidance identifies PNG as the format for preserving a transparent background.
Choose JPG when:
- The design already has a solid background.
- Transparency is not needed.
- A smaller file is more important than maximum editability.
- The image is intended for ordinary web or social-media use.
JPG cannot preserve transparent pixels. Any transparent area will be flattened against a background.
Before downloading
- Inspect the design at 100% zoom.
- Check hair, fingers, product edges, and small text.
- Confirm that the upper image has not been hidden behind another layer.
- Make sure you are exporting the intended page rather than an unused duplicate.
- For an isolated cutout, remove or hide the background before downloading.
Why your images are not blending properly
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Transparency is missing | The image is not selected, the toolbar is truncated, or the element is grouped or locked. | Select the image itself, scroll or expand the toolbar, then ungroup or unlock it. |
| The original background remains | Transparency was reduced, but background removal was not used. | Select the subject image and use BG Remover or Background Remover. |
| The cutout has jagged edges | The automatic selection missed or included pixels. | Open Configure and refine the edge with erase and restore brushes. |
| The result looks washed out | Both layers are too transparent or the upper layer lacks contrast. | Increase contrast, make only one layer translucent, or reduce Transparency less. |
| The subject looks pasted on | Lighting, color, sharpness, scale, or perspective do not match. | Adjust brightness, warmth, saturation, blur, scale, and shadows. |
| Hair, fur, lace, or glass disappears | Fine or translucent details are difficult for automatic removal. | Use a higher-resolution source, restore details manually, or use a dedicated editor. |
| A white or colored halo appears | Pixels from the original background remain around the subject. | Refine the edge with smaller brushes and avoid highly contrasting replacement backgrounds. |
| Transparency becomes white after export | The design was exported as JPG, or a white background element remains. | Export as PNG, remove the background, and test the file over a contrasting color. |
| Mobile controls differ | The app layout differs from the browser editor. | Swipe through the toolbar, look for equivalent labels, or open the design in a browser. |
Does Canva have Photoshop-style blend modes?
Do not assume that Canva’s Transparency control is the same as a Photoshop blend mode. Transparency changes how much of the selected layer is visible. A blend mode changes how the pixels in two layers interact—for example, Multiply generally darkens overlapping areas while Screen generally lightens them.
Canva’s interface and feature availability can change, and a particular account or editor may expose additional controls. If your current Canva editor visibly offers a blend-mode menu, use the modes provided there. Otherwise, layer-based opacity, cutouts, gradients, and color overlays are the reliable Canva workflows.
For precise masks, advanced feathering, channel-based compositing, or dependable Multiply, Screen, Overlay, and Soft Light controls, use a dedicated raster editor. A practical hybrid workflow is to prepare a difficult cutout or advanced blend externally, then assemble the final layout in Canva.

When Canva is not enough
Consider another category of tool when:
- You need true blend modes rather than uniform opacity.
- The project requires detailed, nondestructive layer masks.
- Hair, fur, glass, lace, smoke, or fine shadows must be preserved precisely.
- You need advanced feathering, channels, or color-managed retouching.
- You are processing many product cutouts at once.
A professional raster editor offers the most control. A browser-based advanced photo editor can be a middle ground, while a dedicated background-removal service may be useful for batch cutouts. Check each service’s current export limits and pricing separately. Canva remains the simpler choice when the main goal is to combine images quickly with a layout, text, and brand elements.
