Affinity’s combined model is particularly practical for mixed-media work:
- Prepare the source image. Edit a scan or photograph, correct tone, and remove distractions in the pixel-editing portion of the application.
- Add precise graphic elements. Use vector paths, gradients, hatches, or typography for labels, borders, diagrams, and repeatable shapes.

Affinity and Canva: what transfers, and what does not?
Affinity can export a document or selected content directly to a Canva Uploads or Projects folder through the Export or Quick Export dialogs. This creates a useful handoff when Affinity is the precision-production tool and Canva is the place where a team adds surrounding content, prepares variations, or distributes a design.
There is an important limitation: the Canva handoff is not fully round-trip editable. Canva states that an imported Affinity file appears in Canva as a static image or graphic. A Canva user can move or resize that item and add Canva elements around it, but cannot open and edit the original Affinity layers inside Canva.
That distinction affects how a studio or art team should divide work. Finish layer-sensitive retouching, masking, vector construction, and detailed illustration in Affinity. Send a reasonably final asset to Canva when collaborators only need to position it, add text or surrounding elements, or create distribution versions. Do not promise a Canva collaborator that they can repair an individual Affinity layer after import.
Moving Canva designs back into Affinity
Canva designs cannot be opened directly in Affinity as native Canva documents. Canva recommends exporting the design first as PDF, SVG, PNG, or JPG, then opening the exported file in Affinity.

Canva’s Affinity terms state that the software may be supplied for Mac, Windows, and iPad. Canva’s terms allow AI-powered functionality to be made available within Affinity under additional AI-product terms. Canva separately says that Affinity users on Canva Pro or Canva Business plans can use AI Pass within Affinity. AI Pass is described as a paid add-on with a larger AI allowance than the allowances included with those plans.

This is an optional subscription context, not evidence that every Affinity user needs Canva Pro, Canva Business, or AI Pass. Photographers and print-oriented designers may also consider a monitor calibration device for photo editing. Calibration is a general color-management practice, not an Affinity requirement.
