You can turn a Hot Wheels, Matchbox, or similar toy car into a post-apocalyptic combat vehicle with a few clear additions and layered paint. For a quick build, leave the car assembled and add exterior armor; disassemble it when you need better access for repainting, window changes, or body work.

This project works as a standalone miniature or diorama subject, as well as a Gaslands-style tabletop vehicle. You do not need a specialized parts collection: packaging, plastic card, and other suitable scraps can provide armor and details.

Choose a car and a build path

A 1:64 car is a practical starting point for Gaslands-style conversions. Hot Wheels and Matchbox are familiar options, but construction varies: some have metal shells and rivets that are harder to open or reshape, while other toy cars may use screws or plastic fasteners. Choose a common car whose shape suits the role you have in mind.

Approach Best for Trade-off
Exterior conversion with the car assembled A quick armor-and-paint project using glue-on details. Less access to the interior and surfaces that are difficult to reach.
Disassembly Repainting, changing windows, interior work, or reshaping the body. Requires careful work to separate the body and chassis; fasteners differ between cars.

Before adding anything, decide whether the vehicle is a racer, scavenger truck, armored van, or improvised raider car. A few readable shapes that support one role usually work better at this scale than covering every surface with detail.

Gather materials

Use what suits your build and is safe for the materials involved. Plastic card, packaging, card stock, tubing, mesh, toothpicks, salvaged toy parts, and model-kit scraps can all become armor or equipment. Wire, chain, and small found objects can provide additional details. Keep added parts in proportion to the car.

Glue attaches details; the right choice depends on the materials. Test it on scraps or an inconspicuous area, and follow the product directions. Recycled materials and household supplies can substitute for purchased stock.

Build the vehicle

  1. Plan the silhouette. Pick a clear role and identify the few additions that will communicate it. Plastic card can form armor, a ram, or a spoiler; mesh can suggest window protection.
  2. Choose whether to disassemble. Keep the car together for a surface conversion. If you need access to repaint or alter it, inspect how it is fastened first. Some cars have riveted bodies; others use different fasteners.
  3. Cut and fit details carefully. Make armor and equipment from suitable scraps. Dry-fit pieces before gluing so they remain in proportion and do not obstruct the parts you want to preserve.
  4. Attach the additions. Use an adhesive suited to the actual materials and allow it to set according to its instructions.

For disassembly, Make describes drilling out small rivet posts to separate the body and chassis. Secure the small car appropriately and take care while drilling. Not every car uses rivets, and a simple exterior conversion may not need disassembly.

Paint and weather the car

Build the finish in layers: prime the surface as appropriate for its material, apply thin base coats, darken recesses with a wash, restore color on raised areas, then add localized dirt and rust. Check paint compatibility and product directions before applying one kind of paint or finish over another.

  1. Prepare and prime. Follow the primer directions for the car’s materials. If you are unsure whether the products are compatible, test them on a spare piece first.
  2. Apply base colors. Use thin coats and let them dry as directed.
  3. Add a wash. Darken recesses and add shading without coating every surface uniformly.
  4. Apply dirt and rust selectively. Use a small amount of thinned paint or powdered art chalk, concentrating effects where they support the vehicle’s story.
  5. Finish with a suitable clear coat if desired. Check compatibility with the paint already on the model and follow the product instructions.

Make recommends rust- and dirt-colored powdered art chalk or thinned paint as accessible weathering methods. Dedicated products are another option, but not a requirement. Tamiya describes weathering as simulating “dirt, dust, soot, exhaust burn” and notes that washes can add rust and shading effects in its plastic-modeling guide.
