Use Krita if your main work is raster painting, illustration, concept art, textures, comics, or animation; use Affinity if you need vector-first design, logos, icons, or vector, pixel, and layout tools in one app. The title uses the familiar Affinity Designer name, but current Affinity pages describe a consolidated Affinity app with Vector, Pixel, and Layout studios. Treat references to that current app separately from legacy Affinity Designer versions.
For beginners focused on painting, Krita is a practical starting point: it is free, open source, and designed for creating digital art. For graphic design or scalable vector deliverables, start with Affinity. These are workflow recommendations based on the products’ documented purposes, not comparative test results.

Krita’s official 5.3 manual describes it as an application for creating digital art from scratch, including illustration, concept art, textures, comics, and animation. Affinity’s product pages describe its vector design and illustration tools and its PDF and SVG workflows.
The fundamental difference: vector design versus raster painting
Vector artwork is built from paths, shapes, fills, strokes, and mathematical geometry. It can scale without becoming pixelated and is convenient to revise by editing nodes, curves, strokes, or objects.

Raster artwork is built from pixels. A painting-focused workflow prioritizes brush marks, texture, blending, opacity, pressure, and color. Raster work is a natural fit for concept art, character painting, textured backgrounds, and expressive illustration.
Krita supports vector formats, but its manual describes SVG as a different way of working from its raster-art specialization. The current Affinity app combines vector design with pixel and layout studios. Choose based on the foundation of your work: painted marks or vector paths and designed layouts.
Why Affinity is stronger for vector illustration
Affinity is the stronger fit when the work centers on vector design, graphic design, or scalable illustration. Its current app also groups vector, pixel, and layout tools, making it suitable for projects that combine those kinds of work.
- Vector construction: Useful for logos, icons, and other scalable assets.
- Graphic design: A fit for UI or marketing assets and designed compositions.
- Mixed studios: The current app provides Vector, Pixel, and Layout studios.
- Export and import: Affinity documents support PDF and SVG workflows, but export does not guarantee full editability in another application.
Choose Affinity when paths, vector artwork, and design composition are central. The current app is free to use with a free Canva account; Canva premium is needed for Canva AI features, not for the core app studios.
Why Krita is stronger for digital painting
Krita is designed for creating digital art from scratch, with particular relevance to painting, illustration, concept art, matte painting, and texturing. Its specialization is raster artwork rather than complex vector design.
- Painting workflow: Suited to brush-based artwork and illustration.
- Art from scratch: Appropriate for concept art, textures, comics, and animation.
- Tablet input: A pressure-sensitive drawing tablet can be useful for frequent painting, but is optional. Pressure behavior depends on operating-system support and correctly implemented drivers.
Krita is free and open source under the GNU GPL version 3. Its official licensing page says registration is not required and the application does not need internet access to function. It also states that artwork created with Krita remains the artist’s property and may be used as they like.

Comics and animation
Krita’s documented areas of use include comics and animation, as well as illustration and concept art. It is the more natural choice when the project is primarily painted or drawn artwork. Affinity can serve the design side of a project, such as vector assets or layout, but the sources reviewed do not establish it as a replacement for a painting- or animation-focused workflow.

Vector graphics
Winner: Affinity. Affinity’s Vector Studio is intended for vector design and graphic design. Krita can work with vector formats, but its documentation distinguishes SVG from its raster-art specialization.
Digital painting and illustration
Winner: Krita. Krita is expressly designed for creating digital art from scratch, including painting, illustration, concept art, and texturing.
Typography and layout
Winner: Affinity. The current Affinity app includes a Layout studio alongside vector and pixel tools, making it the better fit when layout is part of the design task.
File formats and handoff
Affinity supports PDF and SVG export, but Affinity says those exports open in Illustrator without retaining full editability. Importing Illustrator or PDF-compatible files can also simplify or flatten appearance stacks, masks, or advanced effects. Krita’s manual describes KRA and PSD as working formats and ORA and EXR as interchange formats that can retain working details such as layers and guides. Opening a file is not the same as preserving its complete appearance and editability; test a representative file before relying on a handoff.
Performance
The dossier contains no comparative benchmark, so there is no evidence-based performance winner here. Avoid assuming one app is faster or produces better results across different hardware and projects.

File formats and compatibility
Krita’s manual identifies KRA and PSD as working formats and ORA and EXR as interchange formats. They can preserve working details such as layers and guides. SVG is a vector format and represents a different approach from Krita’s raster specialization.
Affinity supports importing Illustrator files or PDF-compatible files, though some appearance stacks, masks, or advanced effects may flatten or simplify. Affinity says exported PDF and SVG files open in Illustrator but do not preserve full editability.
Before a deadline, test a copy of a representative document in both applications. Check layers, guides, appearance, and whether the recipient can still edit what matters.
Using Affinity and Krita together
A two-application workflow can make sense when a project needs both vector design and raster painting.
- Create vector assets or design elements in Affinity.
- Export or transfer a representative file in the format required for the next step.
- Paint or illustrate in Krita when the work calls for a raster painting workflow.
- Check the transferred file for appearance and editability before depending on it.
- Keep working copies in each application’s native format.
Operating systems and hardware
Affinity currently lists Windows and macOS, with iPadOS forthcoming; do not describe the current app as available for iPad today. Its new desktop app can open files created in Affinity V1 and V2, but older versions cannot open files created or saved in the newer app. Check the current Affinity information for platform and file details.
Check Krita’s current download page for installers and supported stores for your device. Store builds may have different distribution terms; for example, Krita says its Microsoft Store version requires Windows 10 or above. A pressure-sensitive drawing tablet is optional, and compatibility depends on operating-system support and properly implemented drivers.
