Affinity is now a unified professional design app from Canva that combines vector design, photo editing, and page layout in one workspace. The Canva connection is useful, but it is not a fully editable Canva version of Affinity. You can export an Affinity project into Canva for collaboration, adaptation, and distribution, yet Canva imports the result as a static image or graphic. The original Affinity layers remain editable in Affinity, not inside Canva.

What changed with Affinity?

Affinity was previously understood as a group of separate professional applications for vector work, photo editing, and page layout. Canva now presents the product as one all-in-one Affinity app, designed to let users move between those types of work without switching among separate Affinity programs.

That matters for artists because a single project can involve several kinds of production. A painter might photograph or scan an original, correct the image, build a poster or exhibition card, add vector lettering or a logo, and prepare a print or web version. The unified app is intended to bring those stages into one professional workspace.

Canva describes Affinity as a high-performance creative application for designing, editing, and publishing. However, the available announcement does not establish independent benchmark results or complete feature parity with other professional design suites. The safest conclusion is narrower: Affinity now brings its vector, raster, and layout capabilities together while connecting the finished work to Canva’s collaboration and publishing ecosystem.

Is Affinity really free?

The core Affinity app is free according to Canva. That does not mean every related feature is permanently free, that no account is required, or that the product is sold to you as a perpetual software license.

Canva’s current Affinity Terms describe the software as licensed rather than sold. Use is associated with a Canva account, and the terms allow online entitlement verification. They also state that certain paid features depend on the user’s subscription type or may require additional payment.

In practical terms, expect this arrangement:

  • Affinity itself: Canva says the all-in-one app is free for everyone.
  • Canva account: Current terms link use of Affinity to a Canva account.
  • Canva Premium features: Some Canva services and content remain part of Canva’s broader paid or freemium model.
  • AI features: Access depends on the applicable Canva plan and AI terms rather than automatically being included for every Affinity user.
  • License status: You receive a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the software; you do not acquire ownership of the software itself.

This makes Affinity substantially more accessible than a conventional recurring professional-software purchase, but it is not accurate to describe it as an account-free, condition-free perpetual license.

How the Affinity-to-Canva workflow works

The most useful way to understand the integration is as a handoff: Affinity is the precision-production environment, while Canva is the place for broader collaboration, brand management, adaptation, and distribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Finish the precision work in Affinity. Create or refine the illustration, photograph, vector artwork, or multi-page layout in the Affinity app.
  2. Open the export controls. Use the Export or Quick Export dialog.
  3. Choose To Canva. Canva’s Help documentation identifies this as the dedicated export option.
  4. Select the destination. Choose an Uploads or Projects folder in Canva.
  5. Open it in a browser if desired. The export flow can optionally open the resulting item in Canva.
  6. Continue the surrounding work in Canva. You can move or resize the imported result and add Canva elements around it, then share or adapt the design using Canva’s collaboration tools.

For example, an illustrator could make a finished painted illustration and typography-heavy poster in Affinity, export it to Canva, and then let a small team add event details, social-media versions, or approved supporting elements. A studio could keep the original production file in Affinity while using Canva to distribute approved versions to people who do not need access to the underlying layers.

The important limitation: Canva does not import editable Affinity layers

Exporting to Canva is not the same as opening an Affinity project as a native, fully editable Canva document. Canva’s documentation says an imported Affinity file appears in Canva as a static image or graphic.

Inside Canva, you can generally:

  • move the imported artwork;
  • resize it;
  • place Canva text, graphics, or other elements around it; and
  • use Canva’s wider collaboration and distribution workflow.

But you cannot edit the original Affinity layers directly in Canva. If someone needs to change a particular brushstroke, vector curve, adjustment, text frame, or layout component, that change must be made in Affinity and exported again.

This distinction is especially important for professional artists and print designers. Canva can make it easier for a client or marketing team to use finished artwork, but it does not turn Canva into the layer-level editing environment for that Affinity project.

Canva designs can move back into Affinity—but through exported files

The workflow also works in the other direction, although Canva describes it as an interchange-format workflow rather than direct native project opening. Canva designs can be downloaded as PDF, SVG, PNG, or JPG and then opened in Affinity.

Choose the format according to what must survive the transfer:

Format Best use Important limitation
SVG Vector artwork that needs the best chance of retaining editable vector elements Complex effects, text behavior, or Canva-specific features may not transfer perfectly
PDF Print-oriented documents and page layouts Layers and editability may be flattened or interpreted differently
PNG Finished transparent artwork or raster delivery It is a raster image, so individual design elements are no longer separately editable
JPG Simple flattened images and previews It is rasterized and does not preserve layers

SVG is the preferred choice when preserving editable vector content matters, but no interchange format guarantees perfect preservation of every font, effect, layer behavior, or document feature. Export a test page before committing a complex production workflow.

Canva AI tools inside Affinity

Canva’s Affinity launch announcement says Canva AI tools are available inside Affinity for users with a Canva Premium account through Canva AI Studio. The examples named by Canva include:

  • Generative Fill;
  • Expand & Edit; and
  • Remove Background.

These tools are presented as optional accelerators for tasks such as extending an image, removing a background, or making a quick generative edit. They do not replace Affinity’s precision-oriented editing controls. For a painter, that could mean using AI to speed up a rough cleanup or compositional experiment, then returning to manual editing for the final artwork.

Do not assume that every Affinity user receives every AI feature at no cost. Canva’s Affinity Terms say access to certain paid features depends on subscription type, and AI functionality is also governed by additional AI Product Terms. Availability can change by plan, product version, geography, or account conditions.

Canva states that creative work made in Affinity remains the user’s property and that Canva AI features in Affinity are designed so creative work is not used to train AI features. Those are Canva’s statements about its product and policy position, not an independently audited conclusion about every privacy or data-governance question. Artists working under client, gallery, educational, or institutional rules should review the current terms before enabling AI features.

Brand System in Affinity: from finished asset to Brand Kit

As part of Canva Create 2026, Canva announced Brand System in Affinity. Canva says designers can create brand elements such as photographs and logos in Affinity and publish them directly into a Canva Brand Kit.

This goes beyond exporting a single finished image. The intended workflow is:

  1. create or refine an approved asset in Affinity;
  2. publish that asset into the organization’s Canva Brand Kit; and
  3. let a wider team use the approved element in Canva adaptations and communications.

That could be useful for a painter or illustrator who supplies a business with a hand-painted logo, product artwork, campaign image, or custom texture. The artist can focus on craft and quality in Affinity, while the business can access the approved asset through its centralized brand system.

There is still an important boundary. The available announcement does not establish that every Affinity object, document structure, or layer remains natively editable after it reaches Canva. Brand System is best understood as a bridge for approved brand assets, not as proof of complete two-way project compatibility.

Platforms and file compatibility

At launch, Canva said the new Affinity app was available for Mac and Windows, with iPad described as coming soon. Canva’s later Affinity Terms refer to the software as potentially available in Mac, Windows, and iPad formats and direct users to current hardware requirements.

Because the launch announcement and later legal terms describe different points in the product’s availability timeline, check the current download page and hardware requirements before planning a team rollout—especially if iPad support is essential to your workflow. The supplied materials do not establish universal geographic availability or exact system requirements, so those details should not be assumed.

Canva’s launch materials list support for formats including:

  • PSD;
  • AI;
  • PDF;
  • SVG;
  • TIFF; and
  • IDML, among other formats.

That list makes migration and interchange more practical for artists, photographers, publishers, and designers with existing files. It does not guarantee that every effect, font, layer structure, adjustment, or document feature will behave identically after import. Preserve your original files and test representative documents—particularly complex layouts and files containing third-party fonts—before converting a whole archive.

Where Affinity fits in Canva’s professional stack

Canva’s broader product announcements position Affinity alongside Canva itself, Cavalry, Brand System, and integrations with Capture One and DaVinci Resolve. Canva says Capture One and DaVinci Resolve support Affinity’s native .af file type, which is intended to reduce friction for photographers and video editors moving between tools.

Canva has also described an Affinity-to-Claude AI Connector that can create reusable scripts for tasks such as batch image editing, print preparation, and bulk color adjustments. This is a current Canva announcement claim, not an independently verified performance assessment. Treat it as an emerging automation option rather than a guarantee that every script or operation will work safely on production files.

The strategic pattern is clear even where the technical boundaries remain important:

  • Affinity: detailed local production, precision editing, vector construction, raster work, and page layout;
  • Canva: collaboration, brand governance, team access, adaptation, and distribution;
  • Connected tools: photography, video, automation, and other parts of the creative workflow.

That is an ecosystem strategy, not a claim that Affinity and Canva are technically identical applications or that a project can move between them with every layer intact.

What this means for painters and illustrators

Affinity’s strongest appeal for painters is not simply the word free. It is the possibility of using one professional application for the stages surrounding the artwork:

  • Traditional painters: photograph or scan finished work, make corrections, prepare promotional images, create exhibition cards, and assemble print layouts.
  • Digital painters: keep detailed image work in Affinity, then export finished pieces for portfolios, campaigns, social posts, or client review in Canva.
  • Illustrators: combine raster artwork with vector marks, logos, lettering, or layout elements before handing approved assets to a client or team.
  • Print-focused artists: use multi-page layout tools for lookbooks, brochures, catalog pages, or small publications while retaining the master project locally.
  • Small studios: create polished master assets in Affinity and use Canva Brand Kit or Canva projects to make those assets available to collaborators.
  • Educators and students: gain access to professional-oriented creative tools without the software purchase cost, subject to Canva account and feature terms.

The product may be less useful when a client expects to open and independently edit every underlying Affinity layer in Canva. In that situation, agree in advance whether the deliverable is a flattened asset, an exported vector, a PDF, or the original Affinity project.

A sensible setup for a small art business

  1. Choose a master-file policy. Store the editable Affinity project locally and make clear which files are source documents and which are delivery exports.
  2. Test your important formats. Open representative PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF, and IDML files rather than assuming perfect conversion from the format list.
  3. Separate craft from collaboration. Do detailed painting, retouching, vector construction, and layout in Affinity; use Canva for team-facing adaptations and distribution.
  4. Define the editability boundary. Tell clients that an Affinity export imported into Canva is a static graphic unless you have specifically tested another workflow.
  5. Use Brand Kit selectively. Publish approved logos, photographs, and other brand elements rather than treating the Brand Kit as a replacement for your original archive.
  6. Review AI requirements. Check the current plan and AI Product Terms before relying on Generative Fill, Expand & Edit, or Remove Background in a paid workflow.
  7. Keep an export test. Before sending a print job or campaign to a collaborator, inspect dimensions, text, fonts, transparency, color appearance, and page count in the final format.

Learning resources: what is worth buying?

The software is free, but learning a professional creative application still takes time. An independent Affinity Photo user guide may be useful for readers who want a structured, step-by-step introduction to the photo-editing side of the ecosystem. It is an independent guide—not an official Canva or Affinity publication—and a book written for Affinity Photo may not describe every screen or workflow in the new unified app. Verify the current retailer listing, edition, stock, and price before purchasing.

Older official Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, and Affinity Publisher workbooks can still be useful as project-based references for the concepts associated with those earlier applications. They should not be presented as current authoritative documentation for the unified app without checking the edition and its interface coverage. Current in-app help and official product documentation should take priority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Opportunities around the wider ecosystem

Artists who create reusable illustrations, templates, photographs, or educational material may also want to investigate Canva’s creator pathways. Canva describes programs through which accepted contributors can publish content or templates, but acceptance requirements, compensation, and program terms can change. The Canva Creator program is therefore an opportunity to research, not an income guarantee.

For studios and service providers, Canva lists agency, training, print, content, reseller, and strategic partner categories. These may be relevant to a design agency, art educator, print provider, or consultant implementing an Affinity-to-Canva workflow, but they are partnership routes rather than open affiliate offers or endorsements of Affinity.

Developers building workflow tools can separately investigate the Canva Premium Apps Program, which Canva describes as a route for eligible app developers to earn recurring revenue. It is relevant to software builders—not a necessary add-on for ordinary Affinity users—and eligibility and program terms must be verified directly with Canva.

Privacy, licensing, and availability caveats

Canva says Affinity stores work locally on the device and that users remain in control when they export or upload work to Canva. The practical distinction is important: keeping a master file locally is different from sending a copy into a cloud collaboration service.

  • data residency;
  • enterprise compliance;

  • universal compatibility with third-party software; or
  • continued maintenance of every feature.

Canva’s Terms expressly state that it does not warrant that Affinity will continue to be available, maintained, compatible with third-party software, or free of defects. That is a normal but meaningful qualification for artists deciding whether to move an entire archive or client workflow into the product.

Before using Affinity for confidential client material, check the current terms that apply to your account and organization. If you use AI features, review the separate AI Product Terms as well. Nothing in the free-access announcement removes the need to understand how an uploaded or shared asset is handled.

What Affinity is—and is not

Accurate description Overstatement to avoid
A unified free professional design app combining vector, photo, and layout tools A browser-only Canva feature
An Affinity-to-Canva export and collaboration bridge A fully editable desktop version of Canva
A way to place finished Affinity graphics in Canva projects A system that imports every Affinity layer as editable Canva content
Free core access linked to a Canva account Everything is free with no account, plan, or feature conditions
A local precision-production tool connected to a broader Canva ecosystem A guarantee that every file, effect, font, or workflow will transfer perfectly

For most artists, that distinction makes the product easier to evaluate. Use Affinity when control over the artwork matters. Use Canva when other people need to access, adapt, organize, or distribute approved results. Export between them with a deliberate understanding of what will become flattened.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Affinity completely free?

Canva says the core Affinity app is free for everyone. Current Affinity Terms still link use to a Canva account and reserve certain paid or subscription-dependent features, including some AI functionality.

Can I edit Affinity layers in Canva?

No. Canva’s Help documentation says an imported Affinity project appears as a static image or graphic. You can move and resize it or add Canva elements around it, but the original Affinity layers must be edited in Affinity.

Can Canva files be opened in Affinity?

Yes, through exported formats. Canva designs can be downloaded as PDF, SVG, PNG, or JPG and opened in Affinity. SVG is the preferred option when retaining editable vector elements matters, while PDF and raster formats may flatten content.

Which platforms support the new Affinity app?

Canva announced Mac and Windows availability at launch and described iPad as coming soon. Later Affinity Terms refer to Mac, Windows, and iPad formats. Check Canva’s current download page and hardware requirements for the latest availability.

Is Canva AI included for every Affinity user?

Not necessarily. Canva says Canva Premium users can access named Canva AI tools in Affinity through Canva AI Studio, while the Terms state that some paid features depend on subscription type and that AI is governed by additional AI Product Terms.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Affinity is now a free, unified professional app for vector design, photo editing, and page layout, with a valuable connection to Canva. Its best workflow is not full project interchange: make precise, editable artwork in Affinity, then export approved results to Canva for collaboration, Brand Kit management, and distribution. Keep the Affinity master file, test file conversions, and treat account, AI, licensing, and platform claims as conditions to verify rather than assume.
