Affinity Suite 2.5.2: What Photo, Designer, and Publisher Do—and Its Legacy Status

Affinity Suite 2.5.2 is a June 2024 maintenance release in the legacy Affinity V2 family. Here is how Photo, Designer, and Publisher differ, how StudioLink works, what platforms and Apple Pencil support mean, and what existing owners need to know about availability.

Affinity Suite 2.5.2 is a dated maintenance release in Serif’s Affinity V2 family, not the current Affinity product and not the final V2 build. The suite refers to three separate applications: Affinity Photo 2 for raster editing and photography, Affinity Designer 2 for vector illustration and graphic design, and Affinity Publisher 2 for page layout and desktop publishing.

The 2.5.2 release point is most clearly recorded in the iPad version histories as June 4, 2024. Existing owners can still download their purchased V2 applications and retain valid licenses, but Serif says V2 is no longer sold and will not receive future updates. [c001] [c002] [c003]

Affinity Suite 2.5.2 at a glance

Application Primary purpose Best suited to
Affinity Photo 2 Raster and photographic editing RAW development, retouching, compositing, masks, pixel-level painting, and large-image work
Affinity Designer 2 Vector illustration and graphic design Logos, icons, illustrations, diagrams, typography, packaging, and scalable artwork
Affinity Publisher 2 Page layout and desktop publishing Books, brochures, reports, magazines, portfolios, posters, book covers, and ebooks

All three applications share a V2-era design philosophy and work together, but they are not interchangeable. Photo is the natural starting point for pixels and photographs; Designer is the specialist for paths and scalable shapes; Publisher is the organizing environment for documents with multiple pages.

What does version 2.5.2 mean?

Version 2.5.2 belongs to the 2.5 feature family. The iPad version histories identify June 4, 2024 as the 2.5.2 release date and describe it as a maintenance release rather than a major new generation. [c008]

The larger 2.5 family introduced or expanded features including:

  • Variable-font support, useful when a typeface exposes adjustable axes such as weight, width, or slant.
  • A QR Code Tool across the creative applications.
  • Designer’s Stroke Width Tool for varying the width of vector strokes along their paths.
  • Improved Pencil smoothing and auto-close behavior in Designer.
  • Improved DWG polyline importing in Designer and Publisher.

These are 2.5-family capabilities, not a promise that every item was newly introduced in the specific 2.5.2 maintenance build. That distinction matters when troubleshooting or comparing installers. Later V2 updates reached the 2.6.x series, and app-store histories also record later 2.5.x maintenance releases after 2.5.2. Consequently, 2.5.2 should not be described as the newest or final V2 version. [c005] [c006] [c008] [c009]

Affinity Photo 2.5.2: raster editing, photographs, and painting

Affinity Photo 2.5.2 is the pixel-oriented member of the family. Its documented capabilities include non-destructive RAW development, layer-based editing, masks, live filters, PSD and PSB compatibility, broad color-space support, and editing of large images. [c004]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a painter or illustrator, Photo is useful when the work depends on texture, tone, blending, or a photographic base. Typical uses include:

  • Developing RAW photographs before compositing or painting over them.
  • Retouching scanned artwork and removing dust, blemishes, or unwanted objects.
  • Building a layered digital painting with masks and adjustment-based corrections.
  • Combining photographs, painted elements, and effects into a final composition.
  • Preparing large raster artwork for print or export.

Its non-destructive workflow is especially valuable when you need to preserve the original image while experimenting with masks, live filters, and adjustments. Photo is not the best choice for a logo or other artwork that must remain cleanly scalable at any size; that is Designer’s role.

Affinity Designer 2.5.2: vector illustration with raster support

Designer is intended for vector illustration and graphic design, while also providing raster workspaces for mixed-media projects. Its documented tools include the Pen and Node tools, Boolean operations, typography controls, artboards, symbols, professional color management, and export support for formats including AI, PSD, PDF, EPS, SVG, TIFF, EXR, DXF, and DWG. [c005]

That makes Designer the better fit for:

  • Logos, marks, icons, and interface graphics.
  • Line art and illustrations that need to scale without becoming pixelated.
  • Vector diagrams, maps, signage, and technical artwork.
  • Multiple artboards for exploring variations or preparing a family of assets.
  • Projects that combine editable paths with raster brushwork.

The 2.5 family’s Stroke Width Tool is particularly relevant to expressive illustration: it allows a vector stroke to become thinner or thicker along its length instead of remaining uniformly weighted. Pencil improvements, including smoothing and auto-close behavior, also target hand-drawn vector workflows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Designer’s format support can help when moving assets between applications, but an import or export format does not guarantee perfect feature parity. Complex effects, live objects, typography, and application-specific structures may need checking after transfer.

Affinity Publisher 2.5.2: the layout hub

Publisher is the application to choose when the project is primarily a composed, multi-page document. It supports books, brochures, posters, reports, portfolios, magazines, book covers, and ebooks. Its publishing tools include master pages, linked text frames, footnotes, indexes, tables of contents, professional typography, and PDF/X output. [c006] [c007]

For an artist, painter, or illustrator, Publisher becomes useful after the individual images or illustrations are finished. For example, you can use it to assemble:

  • A portfolio with consistent page numbers, captions, and image frames.
  • A printed art book with chapters, running headers, a contents page, and footnotes.
  • A gallery handout or exhibition catalogue.
  • A process journal combining sketches, photographs, and explanatory text.
  • A book cover or illustrated report prepared for PDF output.

Publisher is not simply a larger canvas for painting. Its strengths are page geometry, text flow, repeated elements, and output preparation. If you are making one illustration, use Photo or Designer. If you are presenting dozens of illustrations in a structured document, Publisher is the appropriate hub.

How StudioLink connects the three applications

Publisher’s Persona toolbar can expose Publisher, Designer, and Photo Personas. The native Publisher Persona handles layout, while the Designer and Photo Personas provide vector and photo-editing tools when the corresponding applications are installed. This is the basis of Affinity’s StudioLink workflow. [c007]

A practical project might follow this sequence:

  1. Develop or clean the source image in Photo. Process a RAW file, retouch a scan, or prepare a painted raster layer.
  2. Create scalable supporting artwork in Designer. Draw a logo, border, diagram, icon set, or vector illustration.
  3. Assemble the final document in Publisher. Place the artwork into linked frames, apply master pages, flow text, add captions, and create the contents or index.
  4. Make local corrections from Publisher when needed. With the relevant Personas available, you can work on placed visual content without treating every edit as a separate export-and-reimport cycle.
  5. Export for the destination. Use a print-oriented PDF/X workflow when required by the printer, or choose a suitable digital format for screen distribution.

StudioLink does not mean that Publisher replaces Photo and Designer for every task. The specialist applications remain valuable for large raster projects, detailed vector construction, and dedicated asset management. Its main advantage is reducing friction while working on a layout.

Mac, Windows, or iPad?

Affinity V2 was distributed for Windows, Mac, and iPad. Serif’s support information lists Windows MSI/EXE and MSIX installers for 64-bit Intel/AMD and ARM processors, Universal Binary DMG installers for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, and iPad distribution through the App Store. [c010]

Platform Good fit Important consideration
Mac Desk-based illustration, photography, typography, and publishing V2 supports both Intel and Apple Silicon through Universal Binary installers.
Windows Desktop creative work and integration with Windows-based production environments Check whether your system needs the Intel/AMD or ARM installer and which installer format your organization permits.
iPad Direct drawing, sketching, retouching, and portable layout work App availability and Apple Pencil support depend on the specific iPad model and Pencil generation.

The legacy Publisher help page lists 4 GB of RAM and a 1280-pixel-class display among its desktop baseline requirements. Treat those figures as documented V2 minimums, not as a recommendation for buying a new computer in 2026. A modern creative workflow involving large canvases, layered documents, RAW files, or long publications may be much more comfortable with hardware above that baseline. [c011]

Using an Apple Pencil with the iPad apps

The iPad versions explicitly support Apple Pencil input. Publisher’s App Store description highlights pressure, tilt, and angle sensitivity, while Designer’s help documentation describes pressure-sensitive drawing and painting. Designer also supports simulated pressure from a finger when an Apple Pencil is unavailable, although that is not the same physical experience as using a pressure-sensitive stylus. [c012] [c013]

For readers choosing an iPad specifically for drawing, masking, retouching, or vector sketching, an Apple Pencil for Affinity on iPad can be a meaningful part of the setup. Do not choose the Pencil first and assume it will work with every tablet: Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil USB-C, and earlier Apple Pencil generations have different iPad compatibility requirements. Verify the exact iPad model against the exact Pencil model before buying. [c014]

An iPad for Affinity creative work is an enabling option rather than a requirement. The suite also ran on Mac and Windows, and desktop users do not need an iPad to use Photo, Designer, or Publisher. The iPad makes the most sense when direct pen input and portability matter more than a traditional desktop setup.

Ownership and availability in 2026

This is the most important part of the 2.5.2 discussion. Following the launch of Affinity by Canva, Serif’s current support centre states that Affinity V1 and V2 applications were removed from new-purchase channels on the Affinity website and app stores. Existing owners can still download previously purchased applications from their Affinity accounts or from the relevant purchased-app sections of Apple and Microsoft stores. [c001]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Serif’s V2 update guidance also states that V2 applications will not receive future updates, while existing V2 licenses remain valid and activation servers will continue to be kept online. In practical terms:

  • If you already own 2.5.2: you may retain access and download the application again through the account or store history associated with the purchase.
  • If you are looking for a new purchase: do not expect to find 2.5.2 as a currently sold, actively updated product.
  • If a project depends on this exact build: treat it as legacy software and preserve the project files, required fonts, linked assets, and a record of the application version.
  • If you are comparing historical license information: older materials described a Universal License covering Photo, Designer, and Publisher across Mac, Windows, and iPad, but historical pricing should not be treated as a current offer. [c015]

The existence of a valid license for existing owners is therefore different from current availability for new customers. A reader should not interpret an old download page, archived review, or historical price as proof that V2 can still be purchased or that 2.5.2 receives ongoing support.

Which Affinity application should a painter use?

For painting-related work, the choice depends on the material and the intended result:

  • Choose Photo for raster painting, photographic reference, scanned artwork, texture, compositing, retouching, and pixel-based effects.
  • Choose Designer for crisp line art, vector brushes, logos, decorative patterns, icons, diagrams, and artwork that must scale cleanly.
  • Choose Publisher for presenting finished paintings in portfolios, catalogues, books, exhibition materials, or other multi-page layouts.
  • Use all three when a project combines painted images, scalable design elements, and a structured publication.

There is no need to force every task into one application. The suite’s value comes from assigning each stage to the tool designed for it, with StudioLink helping when layout and asset editing overlap.

Should you use Affinity Suite 2.5.2?

For an existing owner who needs to reopen or maintain V2 projects, 2.5.2 can still be a useful historical release point, subject to the operating system and hardware involved. For a new user in 2026, however, it is not accurate to present 2.5.2 as a normal current purchase. V2 is legacy software, no longer receives future updates, and was removed from new-purchase channels according to Serif’s support documentation.

If you need the exact 2.5.2 environment for an old project, verify that you have legitimate purchase access and the correct platform installer. If you simply want Affinity’s current creative tools, investigate the current Affinity product separately rather than assuming that its licensing, features, or support model is identical to V2.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Affinity Suite 2.5.2 the latest Affinity version?

No. Affinity Suite 2.5.2 is a June 2024 maintenance release in the V2 family. Later V2 updates reached the 2.6.x series, and later 2.5.x maintenance releases also appeared in app-store histories. Serif now identifies V2 as legacy software that will not receive future updates.

Are Affinity Photo, Designer, and Publisher separate programs?

Yes. Photo is primarily for raster and photographic editing, Designer is for vector illustration and graphic design, and Publisher is for page layout and desktop publishing. They can work together through the V2 StudioLink workflow when the relevant applications are installed.

Can I still download Affinity V2.5.2?

Existing purchasers can still download previously purchased V1 and V2 applications from their Affinity account or the relevant purchased-app history in Apple and Microsoft stores, according to Serif. New customers should not assume that V2.5.2 is currently sold.

Does Affinity 2.5.2 work with Apple Pencil?

The iPad applications support Apple Pencil input, including pressure-related drawing workflows and, in the documented Publisher description, tilt and angle sensitivity. Compatibility depends on the exact iPad and Apple Pencil models, so check Apple’s device compatibility information before buying.

The Bottom Line

Affinity Suite 2.5.2 is best understood as a capable but discontinued V2 release: Photo handles pixels and photographs, Designer handles scalable artwork, and Publisher handles multi-page documents. It remains relevant to existing owners and archived workflows, but it is not the current Affinity product, is no longer sold as V2, and will not receive future updates.
