Agricultural Logos: Farm Identity, Certification Marks and Permission

An agricultural logo may identify a farm, a company or an approved product scheme. Find out how to distinguish them and check ownership, eligibility and use rules.

An agricultural logo can be a farm or company’s own identity, or an official mark that identifies origin, quality or certification. Those marks are not interchangeable: an original business logo follows its owner’s brand rules, while a public or certification mark may have eligibility and permission requirements. First decide what the mark represents and who controls it.

Which kind of agricultural logo do you mean?

Kind of mark What it identifies What to check
Farm or agricultural business identity A particular organization or business The organization’s brand guidance, intended audience and applications. A logo for an event or campaign is not automatically the organization’s core logo.
Origin or quality scheme mark A product that meets a defined scheme’s requirements Eligible products and geography, the scheme specification, and conditions for using its mark.
Government or program mark Participation in a particular public or state program Eligibility, any application or license, and allowed uses such as packaging or promotional materials.
Organization’s corporate identifier The organization that owns the mark, rather than a product’s certification The owner’s permission requirements. For example, FAO describes its logo as its corporate identifier and official seal, and says users must request permission.

University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences brand guidance puts the event distinction plainly: “A promo mark is for an event, program or campaign hosted by an organization that already has a logo.”

How agricultural origin and certification marks differ

Official schemes make claims that an original farm logo does not. The European Commission describes several distinct agricultural and food schemes, including Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG), and other marks and certification schemes. The name and symbol alone do not establish that a product qualifies; the scheme’s scope and specification matter.

  • PDO: The Commission describes all stages of production, processing and preparation as taking place in the specified area.
  • PGI: Typically, at least one stage must take place in the specified area. The Commission’s overview gives a separate rule for wine.
  • TSG: Focuses on traditional aspects and does not require production in one specific geographic area.

These are not interchangeable claims. Check the current requirements for the particular scheme and product before using or describing its mark.

Permission and eligibility depend on the mark owner

Do not treat an official seal as decorative artwork. Its owner or administrator sets the conditions for use, and a mark’s presence on one product does not establish permission for another business to use it.

  • FAO: FAO says its logo is protected and directs users to request permission.
  • USDA organic: USDA Agricultural Marketing Service guidance covers the organic seal’s trademark protection and labeling context. Certified operations do not have to add the registered mark symbol; label changes should be approved by the operation’s certifier.
  • Fresh From Florida: Florida’s guidance describes eligible uses of its program marks. As of April 13, 2026, packaging use requires prior approval from FDACS.
  • Louisiana Grown Real. Fresh.: The state program says eligible producers may apply for a free license and lists packaging and promotional uses. That is a program-specific arrangement, not a general rule for farm logos.

Rules can depend on jurisdiction, product and application. Verify the current instructions with the mark owner before adding a seal to a package, website, sign or promotional item.

If you need a logo for a farm or agricultural business

Start with the identity and its intended use, not with a presumed set of agricultural symbols. Crops, leaves, livestock and tractors are possible imagery, not requirements. A corporate logo, a temporary event graphic and a certification seal solve different problems.

  • Write down the organization or product the logo is meant to identify.
  • Define the audience, geography and places the logo will appear.
  • Check for existing brand rules before commissioning or preparing new artwork.
  • If it will appear on regulated product packaging, identify the applicable labeling and program requirements before finalizing the design.

Some agricultural companies explain their own visual identities in symbolic terms. Syngenta Group, for example, says its logo represents water, earth, plants and sunlight; that is the company’s account of its own logo, not a sector-wide design formula.

Prepare the artwork for its intended applications

Once the mark’s identity and permissions are clear, prepare artwork and variants for the places it will actually be used. Check legibility at small and large sizes, then select digital or physical applications. This is a practical production sequence, not a legal standard; program requirements take precedence where they apply.

For example, Louisiana’s program lists containers, packages, labels, signs, shirts, bags and other promotional materials as possible uses of its mark, subject to program requirements. A listed application does not remove the need to qualify for and follow that program.
