A trishul, or trishula, is a three-pointed spear or trident best known as Shiva’s attribute in Hindu art. It also appears with Durga and Kali, and in some depictions of Vajrayana Buddhist guardian figures. Its three points have several traditional interpretations, so their meaning depends on the tradition and image—not on one universal formula.
What is a trishul?
The trishul is a three-pointed weapon: a trident or spear whose recognizable shape also carries religious significance. In paintings and sculpture, it may be shown as a weapon in a deity’s hand, an emblem, or an attribute that helps identify a figure.

What does the trishul symbolize?
There is no single interpretation that applies to every depiction. The three points are associated with different triads. One reading connects them with creation, protection, and destruction; another relates them to the three gunas—sattva, rajas, and tamas. These are examples of traditional interpretations, not an exhaustive or universally agreed key.

A Grade 12 educational resource from the Government of Manitoba describes the trishula as a revered Hindu symbol and Shiva’s characteristic weapon, and presents both the creation, protection, and destruction interpretation and the connection to the gunas. The specific reading should be attributed to the tradition or source that uses it.
Why does Shiva carry a trishul?
In Hindu iconography, the trishul is Shiva’s characteristic weapon and a visual attribute associated with him. Its three points invite symbolic readings, including the triads described above, but the image’s setting and tradition matter. Avoid treating one explanation as the definitive meaning of every Shiva trishul.

How to read a trishul in a painting or sculpture
- Identify the bearer. Shiva is the most prominent association, but Durga, Kali, and some Vajrayana Buddhist guardian figures may also hold or be shown with one.
- Describe what is visible. Note whether the trishul is held as a weapon, displayed as an emblem, or included as a sculptural attribute.
- Use the artwork’s context. Consider its religious tradition and the particular image before assigning a symbolic triad to the three points.
This approach separates what can be seen—the three-pointed object and its bearer—from interpretations that may vary between depictions.
