“Apple clip art” can mean a generic apple illustration, artwork or marks belonging to Apple Inc., or the historic clip art associated with ClarisWorks and AppleWorks. This article focuses on the last meaning: historical evidence confirms that clip art accompanied ClarisWorks-era software, but it does not establish a complete online collection or blanket permission to reuse its images.
What “Apple clip art” can mean
- AppleWorks or ClarisWorks clip art: historical graphics associated with Apple’s former productivity-software era. This is the focus here.
- Apple Inc. material: Apple logos, product imagery, and other brand assets. These are distinct from generic clip art and are subject to Apple’s guidance for its marks and images.
- An apple illustration: a general fruit drawing or design. Its rights depend on the particular image and its source, not on the word “Apple.”
Keeping these meanings separate matters: evidence about an old ClarisWorks clip-art collection does not grant permission to use an Apple logo, and neither says anything about the rights to an unrelated apple drawing.

What historical sources establish
The ClarisWorks handbook
A ClarisWorks handbook includes a “Using Clip Art” section. It explains that users could copy and paste graphics from a ClarisWorks document or compatible application into most document types. It also discusses separate clip-art disk collections and describes those collections as not protected by copyright and free to use. That is the handbook’s statement about the collections it describes—not a license for every image associated with ClarisWorks or AppleWorks. The accessible handbook copy is hosted by Old Apple Stuff, not an Apple-controlled archive.
A packaged clip-art entitlement
Museums Victoria catalogs a 1991 ClarisWorks floppy-disk package containing manuals, six 3.5-inch disks, and a “Clip art entitlement card.” This documents one physical package, not the contents of every software edition or the files on its disks. The museum marks its catalog image “All Rights Reserved” and says reuse may require permission; that notice applies to the museum image, not automatically to every historical clip-art item. See the Museums Victoria catalog record.

Drawing and painting were different formats
The UK National Archives’ PRONOM registry distinguishes a ClarisWorks/AppleWorks version 5 drawing format, identified as vector, from a painting format, identified as raster. It also notes that ClarisWorks was renamed AppleWorks as of version 5. These format records show that the software family handled different kinds of graphics; they do not identify the contents or reuse rights of any particular clip-art collection. See PRONOM’s drawing-format record and painting-format record.
Can you reuse AppleWorks or ClarisWorks clip art?
Do not assume an image is free to reuse because it is old, came with historical software, or appears on an archive website. The handbook’s free-use statement concerns the separate collections it describes; the available evidence does not establish the rights status of every image, edition, or file. Check the exact item’s source and license before using it, especially in commercial work.
- Identify the image. Record where you found it and, if available, the disk or collection name, software edition, and original file details.
- Check the item-specific rights statement. Look for a license or permission that applies to that image, rather than relying on a general archive description or a statement about a different collection.
- Investigate records when useful. The U.S. Copyright Office’s public-records portal is one starting point for searching copyright records. A search may help investigate a particular work, but failure to find a record does not establish that the work is free to use.
- Ask the rights holder or choose a clearly licensed alternative. If the provenance or permission is unclear, obtain permission before reuse or use an asset with terms that clearly cover your intended use.
This is practical guidance, not a legal determination about any particular image.

How Apple’s brand guidance differs
Apple’s developer licensing page links to guidelines for using Apple trademarks, service marks, and images in marketing and reference materials, websites, products, and packaging. Those guidelines concern Apple material and marks; they do not grant rights to a historic ClarisWorks image or to a generic apple illustration. If the asset is an Apple logo or other Apple brand material, consult Apple’s developer licensing page and its linked guidance rather than treating it as ordinary clip art.
Where to look for historical examples
CLIPARCHIVE describes itself as a working museum of clip art from the 1980s to early 2000s and says it accepts takedown requests from rights holders. Its catalog lists multiple historic collections, but the available information does not establish that it holds a complete AppleWorks or ClarisWorks set. Treat any image there as an individual item whose provenance and rights need checking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere is no established complete library inventory, verified present-day location for all the historical art, or confirmed current official Apple clip-art service. A surviving example or archive listing should not be taken as proof that every original image is online or reusable.
