What Midjourney’s Moodboards actually add
Midjourney’s Moodboards turn a collection of reference images into a reusable style signal for image generation. Instead of rebuilding the same visual direction in every prompt, a creator can collect images, name the collection, update it over time, and apply it to later generations.
The feature is “Pinterest-like” only in its collecting behavior: users assemble an inspiration board from multiple images and use that collection to guide creative work. It does not turn Midjourney into Pinterest, import Pinterest’s recommendation system, or indicate a Pinterest partnership.

The other important feature is support for multiple Personalization Profiles. Together, profiles and Moodboards make Midjourney’s personalization more reusable and project-oriented. They let users maintain distinct visual directions rather than relying on one generalized preference.
Not independent custom models in the conventional sense
The phrase “multiple custom AI image models” needs qualification. Midjourney describes multiple Personalization Profiles and Moodboards that influence generations on its platform. The available documentation does not say users can train independent foundation models, download model weights, export personalized models to another service, or fine-tune standalone models from scratch.
The more accurate description is account-level personalization: Midjourney uses a profile or Moodboard to influence generations inside its platform. A profile or board is not a portable model that the user owns and can deploy elsewhere.
How Moodboards work
Midjourney describes a Moodboard as a collection of selected images used to create a style for projects. Images can be added in three ways:

- Select images from the user’s Midjourney gallery.
Each board can be named and updated. Once used, it influences the visual character of generations. This can help when the intended aesthetic is difficult to explain in words, such as a combination of lighting, color, materials, composition, and atmosphere.
A Moodboard is more persistent than an ordinary descriptive phrase in a prompt: the creator can establish a visual direction once, then reuse it across related prompts and projects.

Moodboards versus Personalization Profiles

Both influence future generations, but they answer different needs. A profile reflects preferences developed through image selections or likes. A Moodboard reflects a visual direction the user deliberately assembles.
For example, an illustrator might maintain a broad Personalization Profile while creating separate Moodboards for a children’s-book commission, a dark fantasy series, and a product-illustration client. These are possible workflows, not required categories.

Midjourney’s December 16, 2024 announcement said users could maintain multiple named Personalization Profiles, select one or more as defaults, and view images associated with particular profiles. Current documentation says the Global Profile must be unlocked before additional profiles can be created. Multiple profiles can represent different styles or looks; they are not separate downloadable models.
The practical advantage is being able to switch the visual preference applied to a generation instead of repeatedly restating it. You can choose default profiles or call a specific profile by ID in a prompt.
Midjourney’s December 2024 announcement described setup as up to five times faster and gave historical rating milestones: users could begin creating a profile after 40 image ratings, a profile could be fairly stable around 200 ratings, and roughly 2,000 ratings could continue to improve results. These were launch-era claims, not current documentation thresholds, guarantees, or independently verified performance benchmarks.

Use a Moodboard when the target is a whole visual language, such as a combination of muted colors, rough brushwork, editorial composition, and atmosphere. Use a Style Reference when a more focused style signal is appropriate.
Midjourney has also described workflows that blend Moodboards and share boards through a live link or code snapshot. Separate boards can represent different aspects of a project and be combined when useful; those labels are practical interpretations, not official required board types.
How to use a Moodboard or Profile
- Open the relevant page. Use the Personalize page to create profiles or the Moodboards page to create boards.
- Create or select a board or profile. For a Moodboard, add images by uploading them, entering image URLs, or selecting images from your Midjourney gallery. For a profile, select or like images as prompted.
- Choose defaults or use a specific ID. Use the Personalization control by the Imagine bar to select default profiles or boards. To invoke a particular one, add its ID to the end of a prompt with
--p; the documentation illustrates--p mIDfor a Moodboard and--p pIDfor a Profile. - Adjust style strength if needed. The
--stylizesetting controls how strongly personalization is applied. Midjourney documents a range of 0–1000, with a default of 100. - Compare results. Try the same prompt without personalization and with one or more boards or profiles to see how they affect the result.
When a board or profile changes, Midjourney can generate new codes. Use the current ID for its latest version; previous prompt codes remain findable. Deleting a board or additional profile removes it from the list and prevents new additions, but previously used codes continue to work.
Compatibility and limitations
Current documentation says Moodboards and Personalization are compatible with Midjourney versions 6 and later. Moodboards cannot be used with Style Reference Version (--sv) or Style Weight (--sw).
Profile compatibility has additional version-specific distinctions. Midjourney says the V7 Global Profile works in V8.1 and V8.2; users can create additional V8.X profiles, but there is currently no Global V8 Profile, and V8 profiles are not compatible with V7. Check the current documentation before relying on a particular combination because version availability and compatibility can change.
Midjourney announced Moodboard and Personalization support in niji 7 in February 2026. Its August 2026 V8.2 edit-model announcement also listed support for both, noting that Moodboards and Style References may work best with extra prompt direction in that version.

A practical workflow for painters and visual artists
Moodboards are most useful when the reference collection has a clear purpose. A painter or illustrator could use this workflow:
- Define the visual problem. Decide whether the board should guide palette, surface, lighting, composition, subject treatment, or a broader atmosphere.
- Collect a coherent set. Choose images that share the qualities you want, while avoiding conflicting references.
- Keep project directions separate. Create different boards for unrelated clients or genres rather than mixing incompatible preferences.
- Generate controlled comparisons. Keep the written prompt similar while changing the Moodboard or Profile.
- Refine the collection. Since board versions can change when images are added or removed, keep track of a useful version before major revisions.
- Use the result as direction, not a substitute for judgment. Evaluate composition, anatomy, cultural context, originality, and suitability for the final work.
This can reduce friction between reference gathering and generation. It is relevant to designers, illustrators, concept artists, marketers, and teams seeking a repeatable aesthetic, but the available sources do not establish a measured productivity improvement.
Protect reference-image provenance
Midjourney confirms that users can upload images or provide image URLs. That technical ability does not establish that every externally sourced image is legally safe to use.
Before adding references, record where they came from and whether you have permission to use them for this purpose. Do not assume uploading an image grants permission to reuse it, or that a Moodboard resolves copyright, licensing, privacy, or client-confidentiality questions. For commissioned work, distinguish references used for internal direction from assets delivered or published.
What this means for Midjourney
The significant change is not simply the ability to use reference images. It is that Midjourney offers named, reusable personalization tools: profiles shaped by image selections and Moodboards built from curated collections.
A user can maintain a learned profile, create project-specific Moodboards, combine or switch among them, and apply defaults or specific IDs as the work changes. The features make personalization more reusable and project-oriented; they are not evidence of conventional, independently trainable custom AI models.

How do I add a Moodboard to a Midjourney prompt?
Copy the Moodboard ID and add it to the prompt with --p, as in --p mID. You can also select default boards through the Personalization control.
Can I use a Midjourney Moodboard with a Style Reference?

Changing a board or profile can produce new codes. Previous prompt codes remain findable, and the documentation says previously used codes continue to work after a board or additional profile is deleted.

Bottom line: Midjourney Moodboards are reusable collections of visual references, while Personalization Profiles develop from image selections or likes. Both can guide generations inside Midjourney, but they are not downloadable or independently trainable custom foundation models. Compatibility and parameter restrictions vary by version.
