Arthur Ganson’s Machine with Concrete is a kinetic sculpture that turns motion into an almost unimaginable wait. A motor drives a chain of worm-gear stages, each reducing the speed; the final gear is embedded in a block of concrete. Ganson estimates that, with the motor turning at about 200 revolutions per minute, the last gear would take well over two trillion years to complete one turn.
How does Machine with Concrete work?
Ganson describes the sculpture as having 12 worm/worm gear pairs. Each pair reduces the motor’s speed by a factor of 50. The reductions compound: the motor’s motion becomes slower at each successive stage until movement at the end of the train is effectively invisible on a human timescale. The artist’s official page explains the mechanism and estimate at Arthur Ganson’s work page.

That is the artist’s stated estimate, not an independently audited engineering result. The work is not a practical machine or a conventional clock; its point is the extraordinary contrast between a running motor and an output that is effectively still.
Why is the final gear set in concrete?
The final gear’s placement inside a block of concrete gives the sculpture its stark image: a mechanism devoted to motion ends at something that reads as fixed and immovable. The concrete is not simply a housing for a slow output. It makes the machine’s vanishingly small result tangible, turning an abstract chain of ratios into a physical encounter with apparent stillness.

Ganson says the work was inspired by dreaming about gear ratios and the implications of exponential powers. Ars Electronica offers a separate curatorial interpretation, saying the sculpture reminds viewers that humans build machines meant to outlive their creators. That is Ars Electronica’s reading, rather than a statement attributed to Ganson. Its 2010 account is available at Ars Electronica.
Why do descriptions give different gear counts and times?
Published accounts do not use a single component-count convention. Ganson describes 12 worm/worm gear pairs. Ars Electronica’s 2010 description instead refers to 12 cogwheels, says the first takes about 14 seconds per rotation, and gives the last cogwheel’s rotation time as no less than two trillion years. A Cambridge University Press excerpt describes 13 gears in series, each moving 50 times slower than the previous one.

Ganson identifies Beholding the Big Bang as a related follow-up. Its reduction represents 13.7 billion years, the estimate used for the age of the universe when the work was constructed; Ganson notes that the estimate changes over time. This number describes the concept behind that separate work, not the rotation time of Machine with Concrete.
