Fish Skin Light is the name of a 2012 feature about UGGI Lights, a handmade lamp project by Icelandic artist Fanney Antonsdóttir and designer Dögg Guðmundsdóttir. Each lamp uses the cleaned, dried skin of a whole Atlantic cod, shaped around the fish’s original form. Its sculptural silhouette also refers to the Icelandic tradition of drying fish outdoors, as the makers explain.
What is a fish skin light?
UGGI Lights is a specific art-and-design project, not a general lighting technology. The lamp’s material is whole Atlantic cod skin. The project was created by artist Fanney Antonsdóttir and designer Dögg Guðmundsdóttir; Make featured it under the title “Fish Skin Light” in 2012. Make’s feature introduces the work, while the makers’ site describes the object and its production.

According to the makers, they skin the cod by hand, clean the skin, shape it back into its original form and dry it before adding the light. They say the process from fresh fish to finished lamp can take up to three weeks. The cod’s flesh continues through the fish factory for cutting and packaging, while the skin is put to use in the lamp. UGGI Lights’ account of the process presents this as a way to use a part of the fish that might otherwise go unused.
The makers describe a typical UGGI as around 100 cm long. They say the lamps are made from large fish, which can be difficult to obtain. The name “Uggi,” they explain, means “a fish fin” in Icelandic. These are maker-reported details, not independently measured product specifications.

The Icelandic tradition behind its form
The artists connect the lamp’s shape to the practice of drying whole fish outdoors on wooden structures exposed to wind. In its 2012 feature, Make reproduced the makers’ description of those structures as a once-visible part of coastal landscapes. The artists frame UGGI as a reflection on Icelandic heritage and the local surroundings on which people depend. These historical and cultural points are the makers’ explanation of their inspiration, rather than independent historical findings in the cited pages. Ordering, price and practical details
The official UGGI pages describe production as limited and usually made to order, while also noting that a few lamps may be in stock in Iceland, Norway and Denmark. Their listed prices conflict: the makers’ background page says prices start at €960, while a separate product page lists €930. These should not be treated as a single confirmed current price.
