Fremantle’s Naval Store hosted The Nature of Transition, a free exhibition curated by Lightly’s Cindy-Lee Davies, during Fremantle Design Week from 18 to 25 October 2024. The show brought together local artists, designers and studios around the festival theme of transition, while a separate exhibition and retail event, Applied Arts, occupied the building’s former substation for three days.
What happened at the Naval Store
Fremantle Design Week ran from 18 to 25 October 2024 under the theme “transition.” PerthNow reported more than 50 events across the walkable festival, including tours, workshops, films, open studios and conversations. One of its headline exhibitions was The Nature of Transition at the Naval Store.
Curated by Lightly’s Cindy-Lee Davies, the free exhibition ran throughout the festival. Its official description focused on connections between objects, people and lived environments, and on how thoughtful design, creativity and community shape human spaces. Davies described the approach to PerthNow: “We’ve subdivided the space, so then everyone can tell their own story within their own environment.”

Painting, ceramics and renewal
The organizer described Jordy Hewitt’s paintings as built from dynamic colour fields and intuitive layering. Emma Lindegaard’s ceramic work drew on local landscapes, tactile forms, negative space and fluid curves. Darryl Dempster’s work was presented in terms of personal transition and renewal. These descriptions reflect the event listing’s framing of the artists’ practices.
Davies told PerthNow that “The theme will run the whole way through (being) the nature of transition and the overall theme of the event.” Pippa Hurst, Fremantle Design Week’s creative director, described the wider program as “thoughtfully curated to engage, provoke and captivate and feature things that people will find useful and relevant in their own lives.”

A separate Naval Store event: Applied Arts
Applied Arts was a distinct combined exhibition and retail space presented by CURRENT in the Naval Store’s former substation from 18 to 20 October 2024. It was separate from Lightly’s week-long The Nature of Transition. The archived listing identifies participants, but does not establish product prices, continuing sales or whether any exhibited work remains available.
How the exhibition fit the wider festival
The Naval Store exhibition was one part of a broader program. PerthNow highlighted a conversation pairing graduate architect Austin Nichols with occupational therapist Isabelle Nash on designing a house for someone with ADHD, as well as a Fremantle presentation of Los Angeles-based director Liam Young’s film Planetary Transition. Those were festival examples, not events identified as taking place at the Naval Store.
