For PerthNow’s tenth anniversary in 2016, Fremantle artist Anya Brock painted a black cockatoo as her vision of Perth. She saw the bird as both a native Western Australian presence and an emblem of the city’s vibrancy and relaxed character, with the coastline and natural environment at the heart of Perth’s identity.
What Anya Brock painted for PerthNow’s tenth anniversary
PerthNow’s anniversary series asked ten Western Australian artists to depict their view of Perth and WA as they were in 2016. Brock was the first artist featured. Her contribution was a painting of a black cockatoo, an image that let her express place through a familiar part of the region’s natural world.
The original PerthNow article contains a species discrepancy: its body calls the bird a red-tailed black cockatoo, while the embedded video caption identifies it as a Carnaby’s black cockatoo. Without independent confirmation, the precise species should not be treated as settled.

In the 2016 interview, Brock described the bird literally as a native Western Australian bird, but also as a way to convey vibrancy and a relaxed feeling. She characterized Perth as a chilled-out city and suggested that its identity could be obscured by the urge to “be better and bolder.” In her view at the time, the coastline and natural environment were already central to what made Perth distinctive.

Her comments were about how she saw Perth in 2016, not a claim about a settled or current consensus. Brock also connected the breadth and space of Western Australia with her practice and with the mental space she sought in her work: “You can’t help but be influenced by the space that we have and finding that peace again within that physical space, which for me equates to mental space,”
Why Brock chose Fremantle and Perth
Brock told PerthNow that lifestyle, ease, friends and family were reasons Perth suited her after time living and working in Sydney. She particularly valued South Fremantle for its community, creative atmosphere, older buildings and emphasis on family. Those details place the cockatoo painting within a broader personal response to living and making art in the area.

Her later work offers additional context without documenting the anniversary painting itself. Visit Fremantle’s 2024 profile describes her zebra mural at Ootong & Lincoln, painted in 2012, and quotes her preference for playful, escapist murals. Her official biography describes a practice spanning original paintings, prints and murals, with bold use of colour.
Where the anniversary painting was shown
The commissioned works were displayed in a pop-up at the Art Gallery of Western Australia from July 20 to August 1, 2016. PerthNow’s July 20 event report said several pieces would be auctioned after the celebrations to support local charities. That was a plan reported at the time; available sources do not establish whether Brock’s particular painting was auctioned, sold or otherwise placed.

Can you buy a print of the cockatoo painting?
Brock’s official contact and shop page lists originals, framed canvas prints, paper prints and colourful homewares at her Fremantle gallery. A 2022 PerthNow studio-sale profile also described originals, prints, rolled canvases, paper works and print stock, and noted Brock’s observation that large abstract paintings can look different in person than on a screen, especially in colour and paint texture. The November 2022 sale dates are past.
These sources establish that Brock’s work is available in print formats generally, but they do not confirm that the 2016 anniversary cockatoo image is currently offered as a print. Her shop categories are a reasonable place to check for current work; they are not evidence that this specific image is available.
