Redefined is Axalta’s 2027 Global Automotive Color of the Year: a saturated, luminous ruby red with subtle sparkle and jewel-like depth. Axalta unveiled the annual color direction at Automechanika Frankfurt on September 8, 2026. The announcement describes a design and coatings forecast—not a specific car, factory paint code or retail touch-up product. Automakers may draw on the direction for future finishes, but no production vehicle has been confirmed as carrying Redefined.
What is Axalta’s 2027 Global Automotive Color of the Year?
Redefined is Axalta’s named color concept for 2027. The company presents it as a modern interpretation of red that combines expressive personality with a polished, lasting appearance. Its visual target is a deep ruby hue that appears luminous rather than flat, with controlled sparkle and changing depth as light moves across a panel.

What color is Redefined?
Axalta describes Redefined as a saturated ruby red with subtle sparkle, unexpected depth and a sophisticated, gemstone-like character. In practical viewing terms, the finish is intended to shift between a rich dark red in lower light and a brighter, more luminous red where direct light catches the surface.

- Hue family: deep ruby red.
- Brightness: luminous, with more visual intensity than a flat or heavily muted red.
- Effect: restrained sparkle rather than a coarse metallic glitter.
- Perceived depth: layered and dimensional, designed to make the bodywork look more sculpted.
- Style position: expressive enough to feel personal, but restrained enough to read as refined and enduring.
Those descriptors identify a visual target, not a consumer mixing formula. Axalta has not published a full pigment recipe, layer count or standardized paint code for Redefined.
How does Redefined differ from ordinary red car paint?
The distinction is mainly in how the coating manages light. A conventional solid red can look relatively uniform across a panel. Redefined is intended to combine pigment saturation with effect technology so highlights, reflections and shaded areas reveal more variation.
| Comparison point | Redefined direction | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Hue | Ruby-red, highly saturated | Creates a richer jewel-like impression than a basic bright red. |
| Light behavior | Luminous with controlled sparkle | Surface character changes as the viewing angle and light source change. |
| Depth | Unexpected visual depth and dimension | Can emphasize curves and edges in vehicle bodywork. |
| Coating development | Uses advances in pigments, effect technologies and color science | Translating the appearance to a production line requires more than selecting a color swatch. |
| Vehicle availability | Not confirmed for a production model | A color trend announcement is not an orderable factory option. |
How does Axalta develop its annual automotive color?
Axalta says its global color experts combine color science with consumer insights and automotive and design trends. They use that work to anticipate where vehicle color is heading and to translate a visual idea into coatings that could be manufactured consistently.

For Redefined, the company points to progress in pigments, effect technologies and color science. That language signals a balance between appearance and manufacturability: a finish must not only look distinctive in a studio presentation, but also be reproducible on an automotive paint line, meet durability requirements and remain consistent between panels and factories. The announcement does not publish an application cost, production process or technical formula, so those details should not be inferred from the color name.
Where does Redefined sit in Axalta’s color-program history?
Redefined returns Axalta’s annual selection to the red family after several years centered on other hues. Axalta says its color story began with Radiant Red 13 years before the 2027 announcement. The published sequence is:
| Year | Global Automotive Color of the Year |
|---|---|
| 2015 | Radiant Red |
| 2016 | Brilliant Blue |
| 2017 | Gallant Gray |
| 2018 | StarLite |
| 2019 | Sahara |
| 2020 | Sea Glass |
| 2021 | ElectroLight |
| 2022 | Royal Magenta |
| 2023 | Techno Blue |
| 2024 | Starry Night |
| 2025 | Evergreen Sprint |
| 2026 | Solar Boost |
| 2027 | Redefined |
The return to red does not mean red has become the only forecasted direction. It marks the specific hue Axalta chose to represent its 2027 outlook.

Will car companies offer Redefined on 2027 models?
That remains unconfirmed. The announcement names no automaker, vehicle, market, factory option, paint code or build schedule using Redefined. Annual color selections can influence designers and coating developers, but adoption depends on each manufacturer’s palette, production validation, regional regulations, supplier agreements and launch timing.
Until an automaker publishes an option name or a vehicle’s official paint documentation, buyers should treat Redefined as a design reference rather than a selectable trim color. A similarly described ruby red may use a different pigment system and will not necessarily match Axalta’s concept.
Can consumers buy Redefined touch-up paint?
No consumer Redefined touch-up SKU has been identified. Axalta has not published a retail paint code or formula that would let a buyer order an exact match. Generic “ruby red” touch-up paint can vary substantially in hue, sparkle and flop, so purchasing by the color name alone risks a visible mismatch.

If a vehicle is eventually released with the finish, the reliable route will be the vehicle identification label, the automaker’s approved color code and a repair supplier’s documented matching system. Until then, professional refinishers may discuss Axalta’s broader refinish coatings and automotive paint color-matching processes, but those services should not be represented as Redefined unless the code is officially confirmed.

What does the announcement mean for drivers and designers?
For drivers, the immediate significance is informational: Redefined signals one influential coatings company’s view of a future premium red, not a product currently available to order. For automotive designers and repair professionals, it illustrates the continued push toward finishes that combine strong color identity with controlled optical effects.
Axalta’s company description cites more than 150 years of coatings experience, a global team serving more than 100,000 customers in over 140 countries. Those figures describe the company’s stated scale; they do not establish that Redefined has entered production or retail distribution.

Can a body shop mix an exact Redefined match today?
Not on the basis of the public announcement alone. Without an official formula or vehicle color code, a shop can reproduce a similar ruby-red appearance but cannot verify an exact Redefined match.
Does the 2027 selection predict that red cars will become more popular?
It is a directional statement from Axalta, not consumer-demand research or a sales forecast. The announcement provides no independent adoption or registration data linking the selection to future red-car volumes.
