The High Court did not reveal Banksy’s identity. A separate Reuters investigation, reported in March 2026, claimed to identify the artist, but the claim was disputed by Banksy’s lawyer. Some observers think the work matters more than its maker’s anonymity; others say the mystery is part of its appeal. The available reporting does not show whether the reported identification changed audience interest, sales or prices.
What the High Court judgment did—and did not—decide
On 1 April 2026, Mr Justice Nicklin issued a costs judgment in Full Colour Black Ltd v Banksy. Full Colour Black Limited, which traded as Brandalised, had discontinued its libel claim. The judgment concerned the costs of that litigation; it was not an order requiring Banksy to disclose a name, and it did not itself unmask the artist.
The judge concluded that the litigation had exploited Banksy’s known concern about anonymity. He ordered Full Colour Black to pay indemnity costs from 10 October 2023. The case arose against a longer dispute over commercial uses of Banksy’s work and the use of trade marks as a means of protecting works and reputation where copyright proceedings might expose the artist’s identity.

The judgment also recounts a 2022 GUESS clothing collection made under an agreement with Brandalised. It says permission for the relevant commercial use had not been sought from or granted by Banksy or Pest Control. That account concerns the dispute before the court; it should not be generalized into a ruling about every Banksy image, print or item of merchandise.
How the reported identification differs from the court case
In March 2026, the Associated Press reported on Reuters’ apparent identification of Banksy. ABC News later summarized Reuters’ investigation, which it described as drawing on court records and a handwritten confession. These are media reports of an identification, not a finding made by the High Court.

ABC reported that Banksy’s lawyer, Mark Stephens, told Reuters that Banksy “does not accept that many of the details contained within your enquiry are correct”. Pest Control said Banksy had decided to say nothing. The reported identification therefore remains contested in the terms described by those reports; it is not an undisputed account of the artist’s identity.
Does the art need the mystery?
Reported reactions point in different directions. Some fans mourned the possible loss of the mystery. Acoris Andipa, director of the Andipa gallery in London, told AP: “The main feedback that I get is that they really, frankly, don’t care if they know who he is.” Those reactions show that viewers do not all attach the same importance to anonymity.

Anonymity can shape how people encounter the work: it invites speculation and keeps attention away from an artist’s public biography. But the images, settings and messages also have lives beyond that speculation. AP quoted art-world voices who expect Banksy’s murals and their messages to continue prompting reflection and discussion. MyArtBroker founder Joe Syer, speaking to AP about Banksy’s responses to world events, said: “And that’s where the real relevance, and value, sits.” These are interpretations of the work’s appeal, not measurements of what audiences will do after the reported identification.

Past auction results show that Banksy works have attracted substantial sums, but they cannot establish what happened to the market after the March 2026 reports. The High Court judgment records that Game Changer, donated to University Hospital Southampton, sold for £16.8 million in March 2021. ABC’s account of Reuters’ reporting cites a MyArtBroker report that a Banksy work sold at Sotheby’s for $7.9 million in 2025. Both sales predate the reported identification.

Neither those historical transactions nor comments from fans and art-world figures provide a comparable before-and-after measure of prices, sales or public interest. It would be premature to conclude either that the reported identification has reduced demand or that Banksy’s market and audience will remain unchanged.

How to read claims about Banksy’s future appeal
- Check which event is being described. The April 2026 judgment was about costs in a discontinued libel case; the reported identification came from a separate media investigation.
- Separate reactions from market evidence. Comments about mystery, accessibility or the power of the work are opinions, not sales data.
- Keep transaction dates attached. The cited £16.8 million and $7.9 million sales occurred in 2021 and 2025, respectively—not after the March 2026 reporting.
- Be cautious about what is being sold. The court’s account of the Brandalised dispute is a reason not to assume that merchandise or prints are official without evidence of authorization.
