Mapusa’s Friday market is a working marketplace, a social meeting place and a vivid record of Goan life in motion. Its tightly packed colors, sounds, smells, goods and human encounters give artists many ways in: they can map its changing patterns, photograph its trade, draw its objects or build a work around memory. Documented projects by Orijit Sen, Assavri Kulkarni and Fabian Gonsalves show why the market has remained a compelling subject.
Why Mapusa’s Friday market rewards close looking
The market is not a still-life arrangement laid out for visitors. It is a regional place of work and exchange. The Government of Goa describes Mapusa as a market town serving nearby beach areas; on Fridays, people from across Goa come to buy and sell. Vendors and shoppers bring commerce together with everyday social life: they meet acquaintances, exchange news and keep up relationships as they move through the stalls. Government of Goa: Mapusa
That activity creates an unusually rich field for observation. A 2017 account describes vegetables, fruit, fish and dry fish alongside spices, rock salt, sausages, wooden furniture and local specialties such as coconut jaggery and kokum butter. Three artists, three ways into the market
Orijit Sen: mapping a market as a narrative
Graphic artist Orijit Sen led “Mapping of Mapusa Market” through Goa University’s Visiting Research Professors Programme, initiated in 2013 under the Mario Miranda Chair. Working with students and members of the public, he mapped the market over three years. A portion was planned for the 2017 Serendipity Arts Festival as a navigable installation and virtual market game. Mapping shifts attention from an individual stall to the relationships between places, routes, goods and people. Assavri Kulkarni: documentary attention
Photographer Assavri Kulkarni had been documenting the market for more than a decade by the time of the 2017 feature, which identifies her as the author of Markets of Goa. Fabian Gonsalves: memory and material detail
Illustrator Fabian Gonsalves recalled Mapusa as a place of nostalgia, chance encounters, chai and stories. He singled out the pottery area and old household objects—details that can carry a personal history as well as a distinctive shape or surface. These approaches are not a ranking or a formula. Mapping emphasizes spatial pattern and change; documentary photography records what is present; illustration can hold onto a remembered encounter or the character of an object. A painter might move between all three, using observation to decide what belongs in the frame and what story the image should tell.

Goods, craft and livelihoods behind the image
The market’s visual abundance is grounded in people’s work. The Government of Goa notes that many vendors are women from nearby villages who bring produce to sell. The 2017 feature gives examples of local and handmade goods they may bring, including chorizo, pottery, cane baskets, vinegar and pickles, and reports that vendors can sell by paying a sopo, or rent. Tourism descriptions add further context without establishing that every item is made or sold in Mapusa. Goa Tourism Development Corporation lists fruit, local vegetable varieties, homemade juices, jams, confectionery, garments, jewellery and bags among things visitors may find at the Friday market. Its broader guide to Goan handicrafts describes wood carving and lacquerware, bamboo craft, pottery and terracotta, brassware, crochet, embroidery, lace and fibre crafts; those are state-level craft traditions, not a verified Mapusa stall inventory. The market also works as a seasonal pantry. GTDC’s monsoon-food guide connects Friday-market provisioning and local feast-season preparations with dry fish, chillies, beans, coriander, grains, rice, homemade snacks, pickles, kokum and tamarind. Attention to those details can bring questions of livelihood and preservation into an artwork. The 2017 Scroll feature reported that vendors were concerned a proposed redevelopment could disrupt selling and increase rent. That is a concern documented at the time, not evidence of current policy or conditions. It does, however, underline that the market is a lived place whose future matters to the people who depend on it.
Visiting the market to draw or observe
Goa Tourism Development Corporation places the market in the precinct of Mapusa’s main bus stand and recommends setting aside a few hours on Friday morning. Its guidance says vendors arrive early and visitors begin coming around 9 a.m. or earlier. Access and local arrangements can change, so confirm current conditions locally before setting out.
