Mail is a flexible mesh made from interlinked metal rings, historically worn as armor. “Chainmail” is common modern wording; the more precise historical term is “mail.” If you want to try making it, a basic 4-in-1 weave is a beginner-friendly place to start—but a craft project is not evidence of protective armor.

What is chainmail?

Mail is a flexible garment or material made by linking metal rings together. The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that “chain mail” is a modern pleonasm and that garments of interlinking rings are more precisely called “mail” or “mail armor.” The Met’s explanation of mail armor covers the terminology.

Mail is not one fixed design or material. A 15th-century German hauberk in the Met’s collection, for example, is recorded as iron, copper alloy, and bronze; that is a description of one object, not a universal recipe. The museum’s hauberk record gives its object-specific details.

How was mail used as armor?

In the Met’s broad account of European armor, mail was a predominant and effective form of body armor from about the third century B.C. through the early 14th century A.D. From around the mid-15th century, it was also used alongside full plate armor to cover gaps. This chronology describes the museum’s European overview; it should not be read as a universal timeline for every region or culture. The Met’s historical overview provides that context.

The Rijksmuseum describes medieval soldiers’ mail as iron rings linked together and worn for protection from swords or pointed weapons, sometimes under a cuirass or thick leather jacket. That is collection context, not a modern safety specification. The Rijksmuseum object description explains the historical use it presents.

How does a basic 4-in-1 weave work?

In a 4-in-1 weave, each central ring passes through four neighboring rings. Repeating that connection builds a flexible sheet. It is a commonly taught beginner pattern, but the exact ring dimensions and material affect how the weave behaves. The educational guides describe a beginner construction approach and emphasize ring size as a consequential choice. The beginner 4-in-1 guide and the ring-size guide offer construction detail.

  1. Choose rings and tools for a craft swatch. Use rings sized for the weave you intend to make and pliers suited to opening and closing them. Follow the dimensions and material specified by the tutorial you are using; no single ring size works for every project.
  2. Make a starter cluster. Close four rings and thread them onto one open ring. Close that ring so it holds the four, then arrange the cluster with the central ring lying between the others.
  3. Add the next connection. Open a ring, pass it through two rings at the edge of the starter cluster, and add two new closed rings to it. Close the working ring. The new connection links four rings in the pattern.
  4. Repeat across the row. Continue adding one connection and two new rings at a time, keeping the rings aligned and the weave flat.
  5. Build the next row. Connect each new ring through the appropriate neighboring pair from the previous row, adding rings as needed to preserve the four-neighbor structure. Check the guide’s diagrams if the sheet begins to twist or buckle.

For a first attempt, make a small practice swatch before planning a larger object. The steps above explain the pattern’s logic; follow the chosen guide for its exact ring dimensions, orientation, and diagrams.

  • Weave compatibility: Confirm that the rings are intended for the pattern you want to make.
  • Tools included: See whether the kit includes suitable pliers or whether you need to provide them.
  • Intended object: A practice swatch, jewelry piece, costume element, and armor reproduction have different requirements.

A craft kit is for learning or making a craft object unless product-specific evidence establishes otherwise. The sources cited here do not test contemporary craft rings or kits for protective performance, so do not treat a finished craft weave as protective armor.
