The Batik Ocean Waves quilt finishes at 60½ inches square, with 10-inch blocks, blue-and-cream waves and gold accents that form pinwheel shapes across the quilt top. The pattern uses 276 blue and 20 golden tan triangle-squares, then adds four borders. Here’s what you’ll need and how the construction is organized.
Pattern overview
The Batik Ocean Waves Quilt pattern from AllPeopleQuilt is credited to American Patchwork & Quilting Editors, with Laura Boehnke as quilt tester. Its sample fabric is from Timeless Treasures’ Tonga Coco Berry collection; the pattern does not establish whether that collection is currently available.

The design combines blue-and-cream Ocean Waves blocks with gold triangle accents. When the blocks are assembled, those accents create contrasting pinwheel shapes.
Materials and yardage
The pattern’s yardage is calculated for 44/45-inch-wide cotton fabric. Choose batiks in the listed color groups, or use the sample collection as a color reference if you can source it.

How the triangle-squares are made
The pattern calls for 276 blue triangle-squares and 20 golden tan triangle-squares. Each starts with a pair of 2⅞-inch squares. For a blue unit, pair a cream square with a blue square.
- Mark the diagonal on the back of the cream square.
- Place the cream and blue squares right sides together.
- Sew ¼ inch from each side of the marked diagonal.
- Cut along the marked line to separate the two units.
- Press each unit open.
Make the golden tan triangle-squares using the same paired-square method, substituting golden tan for blue.

Assemble the blocks and quilt center
Each block combines triangle-squares with small cream and blue triangles and large light-brown triangles. The pattern makes four Ocean Waves Block A units and twelve Block B units. Each block should measure 10½ inches square before it is joined to neighboring pieces; that measurement includes seam allowances.
Arrange the blocks in four rows, following the pattern diagram for each block’s rotation. The rotations matter to the wave layout and the placement of the gold pinwheel accents. Once the rows are joined, the quilt center should measure 40½ inches square, including seam allowances.

Add the four borders and finish
After completing the center, add the borders in the pattern’s specified order:
- Dark brown border
- Pieced blue-and-cream triangle-square border
- Golden tan border
- Wider dark blue border
Layer the completed top with the 69-inch-square batting and backing, baste the layers, and quilt as desired. Finish by binding the edges with the seven 2½-inch dark blue batik strips.
