Quilt as you go lets you quilt smaller blocks, rows, or sections on a domestic sewing machine, then join the finished units. The key is choosing the joining method before you quilt: it determines how much edge to leave and whether the seams on the front and back will be covered, visible, or hand-finished.

What quilt as you go means

Each unit is made from a pieced top, batting, and backing. You quilt those layers together on a domestic machine, then assemble the quilted units into a larger quilt. The unit can be a block, a row, or another manageable section; the method is not one standardized construction. C&T Publishing’s overview describes the process and its variations.

It avoids maneuvering one large quilt sandwich through the machine while quilting, but it does not eliminate assembly. The joins and any exposed backing edges still need a finishing plan.

Choose how you will join the units

Decide on the seam treatment before cutting or quilting. Different methods use different edge allowances and leave different results on the quilt’s front and back. Follow one tutorial’s cutting and joining directions as a complete method rather than combining measurements from several approaches.

Method How it works What to consider
Sashing or fabric channels Quilt units with extra batting and backing, trim as directed, then join them with strips or channels. The strips can become part of the design. Plan their width and how the back will be covered. See National Quilters Circle’s block-joining demonstration and Annie’s Attic’s block guide.
Backing-first join Join the backing edges first, trim batting between units, then overlap and press the block fabric and add a top strip. Alignment and trimming need care, and the front and back have different finishing steps. National Quilters Circle demonstrates this approach.
Add backing while joining rows Assemble quilted rows with backing pieces, press, topstitch, and trim excess backing as the quilt grows. This is a row-based construction with its own backing allowance. The mySewnet tutorial says its technique is best suited to thinner batting.
Folded backing finish Join the quilt fronts while keeping backing out of the seam, trim the batting, then fold the backing edges and sew them down. The Brunswick Quilters Guild demonstration describes hand or machine stitching. Machine stitching shows on the other side; hand finishing avoids that visible machine line.

To choose, consider whether you want visible sashing, what you want the back to look like, how much hand sewing you are willing to do, the batting thickness, unit size, and how comfortable you are managing the join.

You can quilt at this stage or pat the batting to restore its fluffy and soft appearance.

  • 【Ease of Use】 - Our cotton batting is designed for easy cutting and layering. The flat and even texture allows you to cut it to your desired size without worrying about uneven tearing or poor distribution.

Make and join the quilt in a planned order

  1. Select one joining method. Check its instructions for unit size, edge allowance, backing and batting dimensions, and how the finished seam is handled.
  2. Prepare the units. Piece each top, then layer it with batting and backing according to the chosen method. Some constructions intentionally cut the batting or backing larger than the top so there is material to use when joining.
  3. Quilt each unit. Use the domestic machine to quilt the layers, keeping stitching clear of the edge by the amount required by your joining method.
  4. Square or trim as directed. Align the units and trim only where the method calls for it; removing too much edge material can make the planned join difficult.
  5. Connect the units and finish the back. Use the specified seam, strip, channel, or folded backing treatment. Finish any remaining exposed backing joins, then bind the quilt as appropriate.

Edge allowances and backing sizes are method-specific

Published instructions give different measurements because they describe different constructions. National Quilters Circle’s sashing method says to quilt at least 1/4 inch from block edges before trimming the batting and backing. Brunswick Quilters Guild’s notes say to stay 1/2 inch from the edges. These are not interchangeable universal rules.

Annie’s Attic recommends batting and backing at least 1/2 to 1 inch larger than the unfinished block to allow for quilting shrinkage. In its row-based add-backing approach, mySewnet says to cut backing at least 2 inches wider than the row pieces on all sides and advises against stretching it while joining. Use the allowance from the instructions for your chosen construction, not a measurement borrowed from another method.

Common problems to prevent

  • The join lacks enough fabric. The unit edge was quilted or trimmed too close for the chosen seam treatment. Check the method’s required margin before quilting and trimming.
  • The backing looks strained or puckered. In the mySewnet row method, the backing should not be overstretched while joining. Keep it relaxed and follow that approach’s stated allowance.
  • The back has an unexpected seam. Some methods add a top strip or use machine stitching that is visible on the reverse. Choose a folded or hand-finished treatment if avoiding a visible machine line on the back is important.
  • Thick batting makes the join awkward. Batting thickness affects some constructions. mySewnet identifies its add-backing row technique as best suited to thinner batting; that guidance applies to that technique, not every quilt-as-you-go method.

Materials and further guidance

Batting and backing are integral to the method, and fabric strips or channels are needed for constructions that use them. “Quilt batting” is a useful category search, but the available guidance does not establish one brand or batting weight as best for every project.

For another overview of the approach, C&T Publishing’s article on quilt-as-you-go quilts identifies Quilt-as-You-Go for Scrap Lovers as a related resource.
