European oil painting: Oudry’s resting ducks
Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Ducks Resting in Sunshine (1753)
In Ducks Resting in Sunshine, the birds are at rest rather than caught in a dramatic burst of motion. Jean-Baptiste Oudry painted the oil on canvas in 1753; it measures 25 1/2 by 31 3/4 inches. The Metropolitan Museum of Art places the work within eighteenth-century French animal painting, a respected genre in a society where hunting was central to aristocratic life. Oudry exhibited it at the Salon of 1753.

The Rijksmuseum’s Ducks
The Rijksmuseum’s oil painting titled Ducks broadens the subject beyond ducks alone: its record lists water birds including a duck, an Egyptian goose, and a dove. The canvas measures 93 by 116 cm and was acquired by purchase in 1808. The record links it to catalogue literature on Melchior d’Hondecoeter, but the cited object details do not establish an artist or date for the work.
American landscape painting: Beers’s woodland flight
Julie Hart Beers, Ducks in the Woods (1875)
Julie Hart Beers’s 1875 oil painting shifts the focus from resting birds to a sudden departure: three ducks take flight from a quiet forest stream. The Met highlights the contrast between curved and pointed wings and the fine rendering of bark and foliage, punctuated by yellow and turquoise sunlight. The painting measures 26 by 18 inches.

The woodland setting is not pinned to a definite place. The Met says it may have drawn on Beers’s sketches in New Jersey or upstate New York, while noting that the precise location is unknown. The museum describes Beers as known for close observation of nature and detailed forest views.
In the Met’s audio about the work, artist Anna Plesset praises its intimacy and fine brushwork: “What I love about this Julie Hart Beers painting is that it’s so intimate, and she is painting with such a fine brush which is actually the kind of brush (Laughs) that I use.” Plesset also describes the intricate vines and the sensation of seeing the woods from the vantage point of a duck in flight. The Met marks the image as public domain.

Japanese woodblock prints: Hiroshige’s ducks in seasonal settings
Mallard Duck and Snow-covered Reeds (about 1832)

the face of the water.”Rank #4

The narrow format and the pairing of bird, reeds, and water offer a different kind of attention from the expanses of oil-painted landscape. The Met identifies the object as a woodblock print, not a painting, and marks its image public domain. The museum says its public-domain images and Open Access data are available for unrestricted commercial and noncommercial use without permission or fee; consult the object record for the applicable terms and context.

A Wild Duck near a Snow-laden Shore (about 1843)
Hiroshige’s later A Wild Duck near a Snow-laden Shore, dated about 1843, is another Edo-period woodblock print. Made with ink and color on paper, it measures 14 7/8 by 6 3/4 inches. Its title places a wild duck by a snow-laden shore, providing a useful point of comparison with the earlier print’s snow-covered reeds. The two records document distinct works and dates; their titles and settings suggest different seasonal framing without requiring assumptions about details the records do not state.

These works are not interchangeable examples of one style: a French oil painting, an American woodland landscape, and Edo-period prints belong to different contexts and artistic purposes. A few questions can help make comparisons without flattening those differences:
Quick Recap
- What is the medium? Oil on canvas allows a different kind of surface and detail than a woodblock print on paper.
- What is the bird doing? Oudry’s ducks rest; Beers’s take flight; Hiroshige’s prints place ducks in compact seasonal scenes.
- How does the setting shape the image? A woodland stream, sunlit resting place, snowy reeds, and snow-laden shore each connect the bird to a distinct environment.
- What is documented, and what is interpretation? Museum records establish object details and context; a suggested landscape inspiration or a viewer’s response should remain qualified.
