The right laminating format depends on your document’s size and how often it will be handled: use self-adhesive sheets for small batches, a self-sealing pouch for a letter-size item, or a roll for larger work. These products can add a practical surface covering, but they are not archival preservation. For historic, valuable, or irreplaceable originals, avoid applying adhesive film and use an appropriate storage enclosure instead.
Which laminating format fits your project?
“Laminating sheets” can mean separate adhesive sheets, a preformed pouch, or film on a roll. They differ in how they cover an item and the sizes they accommodate. The examples below are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent performance rankings.
| Format | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Self-adhesive sheets | Individual documents, photos, or craft items that fit within the sheet. Avery’s instructions call for two pieces per item, one on each side, and no laminating machine. | Allow room around the item for overlap, account for two sheets per document, and choose a pack size. Gridlines aid alignment; excess can be trimmed. |
| Self-sealing pouch | A simple machine-free option for a document up to 8.5 × 11 inches. Scotch lists a letter-size pouch for frequently handled paper items such as signs, flyers, schedules, and certificates. | Check the document’s dimensions and confirm that a pouch suits the item. |
| Self-sealing roll | Larger work such as posters, signs, or banners. Scotch lists a single-sided roll measuring 16 inches × 10 feet. | Check the roll width, required coverage, and whether single-sided film is appropriate. |
For sheets, Avery’s 9 × 12-inch size gives more working area than a letter-size document, but the item still needs enough room for the film to meet around its edges. The format specifications are available on Avery’s two-sheet 73602 product page and Avery’s 50-sheet 73601 product page. Scotch’s pouch page and roll page describe their respective sizes and intended uses.
How many sheets do you need?
For Avery self-adhesive sheets, plan on two sheets per document because one covers each side. The manufacturer lists its 73602 pack as two clear, permanent polypropylene sheets measuring 9 × 12 inches each, and its 73601 pack as 50 sheets of the same nominal size and material. That works out to one item per 73602 pack or up to 25 items per 73601 pack if you use one pair per item. See the 73602 specifications and 73601 specifications.

Are self-adhesive sheets as good as a laminator?
They serve a different purpose rather than offering an established like-for-like performance comparison. Self-adhesive sheets and Scotch’s self-sealing pouch are machine-free formats; the pouch is specified for documents up to 8.5 × 11 inches. Avery’s sheets cover both sides using separate pieces, while Scotch’s listed roll is single-sided and intended for larger work. The cited sources do not provide independent tests comparing these products with machine-applied lamination, so they do not establish which lasts longer or protects better.

Can you laminate an old or important document?
Do not use consumer laminating film as conservation treatment for a historic, valuable, or irreplaceable original. The Library of Congress warns that “Lamination introduces a number of aggressive chemical components and byproducts and is known to detrimentally and irreversibly affect laminated objects.” Its guidance is directed at preservation; see Library of Congress recommendations for preserving time-capsule contents.
Avery describes its sheets as acid-free or archival-safe on its 73602 and 73601 product pages. Those are manufacturer descriptions and should not be treated as a guarantee that permanently adhering film is safe for an important original. The Library of Congress’s discussion of historical cellulose acetate laminates describes concerns involving plasticizers and deterioration; it is context for caution, not evidence that every modern consumer sheet has the same composition.

What to use instead for valuable paper
For storage without permanently adhering film, the Library of Congress identifies acid- and lignin-free folders, mats, and document boxes, as well as suitable polyester film sleeves, as supportive enclosures for works on paper. Choose an appropriately sized enclosure and handle the document carefully. Its care guidance for works on paper and paper FAQ emphasize proper storage, environment, and handling as effective preventive measures. If the paper is fragile or its condition is uncertain, consult a paper conservator before putting it into an enclosure or applying any treatment.
