Mathematical images turn rules, relationships, and changing systems into things we can see. Some are computed visualizations of mathematical objects, such as the Mandelbrot set; others are artworks that interpret mathematical ideas through painting or another medium. Their beauty is not a mathematical theorem. It can come from the structures they reveal—and from an artist’s choices of color, form, and composition.

What makes a mathematical image beautiful—and what does it show?

A useful way to look at any mathematical image is to ask two questions: what idea or object does it represent, and how did the maker turn that idea into a visual form? The answers distinguish a computer-generated view of a mathematical structure from an artwork inspired by a theorem or geometric relationship. Both can be compelling, but they do not have the same purpose.

Mathematics can generate intricate patterns from concise rules, or describe systems whose behavior takes shape over time. Art can make those ideas tangible through composition, materials, and expressive choices. Knowing something about the underlying idea may deepen appreciation, but it is not a prerequisite: the Smithsonian Institution’s “Where Art Meets Math” collection description says viewers do not need a mathematics background to appreciate the completed pieces.

Three ways mathematics becomes visible

The Mandelbrot set: iteration made visible

The Mandelbrot set is a collection of complex parameters defined by what happens when a quadratic rule is iterated: parameters belong to the set when the resulting sequence remains bounded. The American Mathematical Society’s mathematical imagery collection uses the set to show how a simple equation can produce elaborate structure. The AMS’s fractal geometry text discusses it alongside Julia and Fatou sets.

In a rendered image, color can distinguish regions or indicate how the iteration behaves. Those colors are choices made for the visualization, not part of the set’s mathematical definition. The underlying object comes from the rule; the rendering makes its structure easier to inspect.

The Lorenz attractor: a system drawn as a shape

The Lorenz attractor comes from a system of three differential equations originally created to model atmospheric convection. Its familiar looping form visualizes the system’s evolving behavior. The AMS notes that it is commonly used to illustrate sensitivity to initial conditions in a chaotic system: small differences in a starting state can lead to substantially different outcomes.

This is a different kind of image from the Mandelbrot set. Rather than showing a set defined by iteration over complex parameters, it gives a visual trace of behavior described by a dynamical system.

Mathematical art: ideas translated into artworks

Mathematical art may take the form of a painting or another physical work, with mathematics informing its subject, structure, or construction. The Smithsonian’s “Where Art Meets Math” collection describes mathematical paintings made by American cartoonist Crockett Johnson in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Named examples include “Law of Orbiting Velocities,” “Mystic Hexagon (Pascal),” and “Proof of the Pythagorean Theorem (Euclid),” as well as Agnes Denes’s “Sun Mathematics.”

These works are not simply diagrams of equations. Their titles point to mathematical ideas, while the works themselves can be encountered as paintings. For a specific object, check the Smithsonian’s current collection record and image-rights information before reproducing an image or describing it as currently on view.

How to look closely at a mathematical image

Use these questions to connect what you see with how the image was made:

Rank #4
Chaos Theory Lorenz Attractor Poster, Mathematical Wall Art, Nonlinear Dynamics Science Print, Deterministic Chaos Diagram, Physics Classroom Decor, Abstract Math Poster, Scientist Gift, 8x10 inc. Unframed Print
  • PERFECT FOR MANY SPACES: Ideal for a science classroom, mathematics office, physics lab, engineering workspace, university dorm, study room, library, modern home office, tech room, or minimalist gallery wall. It brings depth without noise, making the wall feel thoughtful, curious, and alive with ideas that keep unfolding each time you look.
  • What is represented? It could be a fractal set, a dynamical system, a geometric construction, or a theorem or relationship.
  • How was the image made? It might be a computed rendering, a diagram, a painting, a sculpture, or another medium.
  • What is the relationship between the mathematics and the image? Does it visualize a formal object or process, or interpret a mathematical idea artistically?
  • What should you notice? Look for repetition and self-similarity in a fractal, changing behavior in a dynamical system, geometric relationships in a construction, or artistic decisions in color and composition.

These questions help distinguish an image that illustrates a mathematical object from an artwork that uses mathematical ideas. Not every attractive pattern is a fractal, and not every mathematical artwork aims to explain a concept like a textbook diagram.

Making a mathematical image

Computational visualization can be a way to explore fractals while learning the mathematics behind them. A 2021 Mathematical Association of America abstract book describes an undergraduate project that used complex analysis and Python to visualize fractals, including Mandelbrot and Newton fractals. It offers an example of a learning route, not a recommendation for a particular current application.
