You can sell originals, prints, or commissioned work through an art marketplace or your own online shop. The right route depends on what you make, who you want to reach, the costs you can absorb, and how you will produce and fulfill orders. A listing channel is a way to present and transact—not a promise of buyers or income.
Choose what you will sell
Decide whether your offer is a one-of-a-kind original, a reproduction, or custom work before choosing a platform. Each has different production, pricing, and fulfillment demands.
Original paintings and other one-of-a-kind work
Originals can be listed on an art marketplace or in your own shop. Price them with materials and the time involved in making the work in mind. Plan for careful packing, shipping, and communication with the buyer. Some work is difficult to reproduce convincingly: Shopify notes that highly textured work such as oil painting and sculpture may translate less readily into prints than two-dimensional drawings or watercolors.
Prints and reproductions
Drawings, illustrations, and digital art may be suitable for reproduction. You can produce a limited run yourself, use a print-on-demand provider, or sell through a marketplace with print fulfillment. Compare production cost, paper and framing options, image-file requirements, who handles packaging and delivery, and the amount left after fees.

Print-on-demand can reduce the need to hold inventory, but it does not remove the need to assess materials, image requirements, product quality, and margins. Saatchi Art says its open-edition prints use the primary image file of the original artwork. Its print-profit calculation and artist share are described below.
Custom and commissioned work
Commissions let buyers request a personalized piece or a work that is not already available. Describe the scope, size, materials, revision limits, delivery timing, and payment terms before accepting an order. Etsy’s seller policy says to use its custom-order feature when the final price for a bespoke or highly customized order cannot be set when the original listing is created.

Choose a sales channel that fits the work
A marketplace can provide a place to list work, while an independent shop offers more control over presentation and the customer relationship. With your own shop, you also have to bring visitors and manage the storefront. Neither route guarantees sales; compare the practical tradeoffs before committing.
| Factor | Marketplace | Independent shop |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | A ready-made place to list work; discovery and sales are not guaranteed. | You are responsible for attracting visitors. |
| Control | Presentation and selling are subject to platform features and terms. | More control over branding, presentation, and the audience relationship. |
| Costs and proceeds | Check current commissions, transaction and payment fees, and any production charges. | Account for store and payment costs, marketing, and any production or fulfillment expenses. |
| Fulfillment | Responsibility varies by platform and offer; confirm who produces, packs, ships, and handles support. | You manage the shop and must arrange production and fulfillment or contract them out. |
| Work types | Options vary; check suitability for originals, reproductions, and commissions. | You can tailor the offer, but must organize the processes for each work type. |
Shopify’s 2026 guide names Shopify, Etsy, Saatchi Art, Fine Art America, and Redbubble as examples of online store or marketplace options. Treat them as starting points for comparison, not endorsements. Verify current features, policies, fees, and eligibility before listing.

Set a price that leaves money after costs
A retail price is not the same as your proceeds. Start a cost sheet for each item and include production, selling, and fulfillment expenses before adding a margin.
- For prints: Shopify’s cost-plus formula is production cost plus marketing and selling costs plus other costs, such as print-on-demand commissions, plus markup equals retail price.
- For originals: Include materials and the time needed to make the work, as well as packaging, seller-paid shipping, platform and payment fees, and marketing or customer acquisition costs.
- For every offer: Check the platform’s current terms and calculate the amount you retain after all applicable charges. Fees and taxes can depend on platform, location, and seller situation.
Saatchi Art’s commission help page, updated July 26, 2023, states: “If you sell an original work, Saatchi Art will receive a 40% commission on the artwork price.” Its page says the commission is calculated on the artwork price; confirm the current policy before using that figure in your calculations.

Etsy fees vary by transaction and seller situation, so use Etsy’s current official fee schedule rather than assuming a universal total. If you sell the same work through more than one channel, Saatchi Art’s pricing help advises keeping prices consistent across galleries, marketplaces, personal sites, and social accounts.

Plan production, delivery, and customer expectations
Before listing, work out how an order will move from purchase to delivery. For self-produced prints, choose materials and decide how you will package and ship them. Archival fine art paper is a more expensive option that may support a higher-priced print when you explain its qualities to buyers; verify material characteristics and compatibility with your own production setup.
For print-on-demand, check the provider’s available materials, image specifications, production costs, and fulfillment responsibilities. For an original, choose packaging suitable for the work and account for shipping costs you will bear. For commissions, make the scope, schedule, payment arrangements, and revision boundaries clear before work begins.

Protect your rights and list work honestly
Only list art you have the right to sell. Saatchi Art’s terms require artists to be the creator or to have the rights, licenses, consents, and releases needed for submitted work. Its copyright policy says that selling a physical or digital copy does not by itself transfer intellectual-property rights in the artwork. These are Saatchi Art’s terms and policy, not jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
Build a workable first listing
- Define the offer: Choose an original, print, or commission and specify exactly what the buyer receives.
- Choose the channel: Compare audience access, control, fees, fulfillment duties, and fit for that work type. Read current platform terms.
- Calculate the price: Add production and selling costs, seller-paid shipping where applicable, and a margin. For originals, account for materials and time.
- Confirm production and delivery: Set image and material requirements, packaging, shipping arrangements, and customer communication expectations.
- Check rights and terms: Confirm you may offer the work and that your listing accurately distinguishes the original, reproduction, or digital product.
What to expect from selling online
There is no reliable earnings or conversion figure established here for a typical online art seller. Sales depend on the work, pricing, audience, visibility, and ability to deliver orders; opening a storefront alone does not establish that buyers will find or purchase the work. Treat early listings as offers to refine using actual costs, customer questions, and sales rather than assuming a particular income.
